i think i go as far as viva la trance.(one album further than hstencil) and Yeti!! jeez, don't ever forget Yeti!! buy that one tomorrow.

hstencil, in the parlance of ILM, is OTM. after wolf city, though, forget about it.

Classic, and I like Vive la Trance. This review of the DVD doesn't sound good, though.

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 01:58 (twenty years ago) link

I honour hstencil

(although there is a posthomous comp called "Manana" which has various live and peel sessions between Tanz Der Lemminge and Wolf City eras.. which is alright, but not worth killing to get)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:03 (twenty years ago) link

Classic for the first few albums APART from Dance Of The Lemmings, which I thought tipped over into rambling hippy bogshite for the most part. Yeti, Wolf City, Phallus Dei - buy!

I saw them playing at the Astoria a few years ago though and it was horrendous, they sounded like Starship without the choruses. Apparently they played some older (i.e. good) stuff in the second half but I was long gone by then, as were Steven Stapleton and David Tibet who were standing in front of me but left after about 15 minutes.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:03 (twenty years ago) link

Several years ago, as a passenger in a car, I heard a Amon Duul tune that was simply amazing. I asked who it was, but not album or song title. About a month later I bought a cd by them (red and white cover??) but it was absolute shit. Last year an acquaintance lent me Wolf City, saying it was classic. I gave it 3 tries, but thought it was awful!

It still drives me nuts to this day that I don't know what that song was!

peepee (peepee), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:15 (twenty years ago) link

I've still yet to hear a single note from the first AD. I was holding a couple of their disks in my hands at Amoeba yesterday, but decided not to experiment since neither title sounded familiar (I have read descriptions before). Any recommendations?

And peepee, it's conceivable to me that someone could love Phallus Dei but think every other AD II album crap, so maybe investigate that one.

nickn (nickn), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:31 (twenty years ago) link

get Yeti.

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 02:32 (twenty years ago) link

I'm a Tanz Der Lemminge guy myself (call me prog bitch), though granted that album starts really slow, but it just gets better and better and better and levels off in the greatest way.

Yeti is beyond fucking awesome. It kills. Then 70% through, it abruptly loses focus for me, so overall, it slips just below Tanz. But as for single most amazing moments and songs, Yeti wins.

I really should listen to Phallus Dei more often, though.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:44 (twenty years ago) link

their use of synth is different but no less inpired in that more rock context than kraftwerk's synth x synth x synth .. angle

get Yeti as intro, and then with the others, it'll just get better and better

one single lp then two 2lps !! in 2 years ! well prepared for the studio, well-gigged into shape, using the then quite quite new 2lp format properly ..

and then more a few years later
Viva .. it's quite different -- there are amazing tracks and awful filler. The point though, they still had very good ideas for one of their pop albums that still lived up to the early use of that word in its title

am still having trouble getting into Carnival in Babylon myself, but the one track i've heard off Wolf City was maybe the right track to hear, so i'm hoping for more from that

Hijack was one of the most dissapointing mail-unwrap-listen experiences in my life though -- nothing to redeem it, but i'm still wondering about the possibilities of their being one or two classic tracks amoungst the later supposed dross

the i-duuno?/ frame-up /false alarm/ whatever re: Baader-Meinhof intrigues me -- i presume both Amon Düüls completely peacefully innocent obv., but i like the subversion of the blues and american culture there throughout the group's work, even whilst they were a big-selling american "head" band

george gosset (gegoss), Monday, 17 November 2003 05:25 (twenty years ago) link

my chronology was that I got Yeti last (the first records I found were Tanz... and Wolf City at various thrift stores), sort of a saving-the-best-for-last-but-not-knowing-it way. I would not agree that it will "get better and better" after buying Yeti, but that if you buy that you may eliminate the possibility of having to buy everything else if you're not a completist-type (like I am).

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 05:29 (twenty years ago) link

i kind-a agree with you, thinking about it, but people play whole cds these days. Getting into Amon Düül II took me a sceptical while to really love as a rock collective. Yeti best ? i'm not ready to make that call.

instead, try this : play one side of dance of the lemmings then play, say, plague of lighthouse keepers. ie go back to favourite songs and especially playing the lps the way they were designed to be played, one side at an instance.

there's a lot of material there, so sifting through gradually, getting to know the band mixing "chill/ drone/ trance" with "rock" quite cruisely is my advice. They're almost chris&cosey "subliminal", they creep up

but if i hadn't heard yeti first (thanks to duane playing them to me while we were arguing the virtues of "rock"), they would have seemed both too "rock" and too "trance" (even "trance" or "drone" as those words meant in 1973), and i wouldn't have bothered follow-up

(oh, i found the original viva vinyl in a well-maintained thrift shop some time later. The inter-layered drones on "mozambique", once the truncated b-side of that weird "pigman" single then splayed out to full length on the lp (with secret message at end), that may be my favourite "trance" song, and i like the way that that lp itself from 1973 was possibly the first to use that word "trance" with justification and admission, and "mozambique" one of few pieces to justify that label, imo)

george gosset (gegoss), Monday, 17 November 2003 06:34 (twenty years ago) link

classic.
viva le trance - good.
yeti - best.
carnival in babylon is pretty good but i've always had a hard time remembering anything on the album for more than 30 seconds or so after listening to it. so it's always something of a surprise, i suppose.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 17 November 2003 07:54 (twenty years ago) link

So I've never listened to amon duul, what should I start with.

ddrake, Monday, 17 November 2003 09:14 (twenty years ago) link

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 17 November 2003 10:56 (twenty years ago) link

I have a guilty secret not only do I have the full double album version of "Made In Germany" but I actually quite like some of it. "Carnival In Babylon" is poor, "Dance of the Lemmings" is poor, "Hijack" is unforgivable, "Vive la Trance" fitfully amusing - the other albums are all good, later albums less than useless.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:09 (twenty years ago) link

have you ever noticed that the riffs of "wolf city" were copied by the who on "imminence front"?

carol brady, Monday, 17 November 2003 13:08 (twenty years ago) link

I've still yet to hear a single note from the first AD. I was holding a couple of their disks in my hands at Amoeba yesterday, but decided not to experiment since neither title sounded familiar (I have read descriptions before). Any recommendations?

Generally, I would recommend avoiding Amon Düül, unless you are one of those saddoes who think the more unlistenable something is the higher the hipness quotient. The exception is "Paradieswarts Düül", which is good and even better with the addition of the Eternal Flow/Paramechanical World single.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:24 (twenty years ago) link

I feel fear when we agree abt something. I used to have "disaster", which was a double album, and it sounded like someone got a cheap cassette recorder, set it to "record", and pushed it under the drumkit at a bad frak jam. AVOID.

NB that the recent round of repertoire remasters of ad2 albums have all been sonic maximised, somewhat to the detriment of the music.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:28 (twenty years ago) link

I noticed a whole new batch of AD2 reissues recently all with mysterious (and probably spurious) bonus tracks. Not on Repertoire as far as I recall.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:31 (twenty years ago) link

"frak jam" = "freak jam"

if they're in little cardboard fold-out sleeves, that's probably them. "Yeti" has the paramechanical world 7" as a bonus which would have been neat, if they hadn't maximised the whole fucking thing. It really pisses me off.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:41 (twenty years ago) link

Ah these are not in cardboard fold-out sleeves - I don't know who's behind them, they're cheap but probably illegal.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:44 (twenty years ago) link

ha, they probably sound better than the "official" ones I got!! Is there an official re of "bury my heart at wounded knee" yet?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:47 (twenty years ago) link

I've got a copy - which I think is on Repertoire. Well it's on some German prog rock reissue label anyway. It has a truly abysmal bonus track, whihc is so bad it's almost funny

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:50 (twenty years ago) link

pash, do you like the stuff with the synth on it ? is that wolf and viva ?
what about those other albums on other labels ? If they're effectively boots, do they count ?
I do think they used their solitary VCS3 as well as the four pink floyds' at times

listening to albums one, two and three will be a chore -- maybe i think of a golden period for that band -- Dadamais, Can had a golden period and are forgiven for their mid '70s burn out crap -- i think both bands are the same in lot of ways -- maybe communal bands have a cell structure that means some cells are self defeating, lots of little marching cans from nonwarholia, but that's as good at or better than the marching music of some Kraftwerk and some Can (who sometimes sound too uptight or too mellow)

george gosset (gegoss), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:20 (twenty years ago) link

classic_ tanz der lemmings, phallus dei. can you live without em?

francesco, Monday, 17 November 2003 17:38 (twenty years ago) link

Generally, I would recommend avoiding Amon Düül, unless you are one of those saddoes who think the more unlistenable something is the higher the hipness quotient.

oh, hush.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:38 (twenty years ago) link

I bought Phallus Dei the other week and was pretty disappointed. It didn't "rock" enough for me, not by a long stretch. I think all my time spent listening to Mainliner and various Makoto Kawabata side projects has permanently skewed my idea of what "psychedelic" music is "supposed" to sound like.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:51 (twenty years ago) link

the stuff with the synths and the duets is what interests me -- i really like Viva .. now. Some good ideas, in new short songs, with interesting male/female dynamic and all the extra specials the VCS 3 offers. I will try to hear Wolf City.

so, avoid the first three jam lps (well the ten jam sides, like the greatful dead, no synths, a waste of time)
(and avoid all jam lps obv.)

george gosset (gegoss), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:03 (twenty years ago) link

Can had a golden period and are forgiven for their mid '70s burn out crap

The only crap Can album is "Out Of Reach", certainly Can never plumbed similar depths to ADII. ADII were always really just a rock band, Can weren't.

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 14:39 (twenty years ago) link

So, is it about time for some early ADII vinyl reissues right now or what? Yeah, you can sometimes find original "Lemmings" and ones after purty easily, but i'm DYING to get "Yeti" or "Phallus Dei" on vinyl, and these are things i've never seen. (surely, stence, you got these?)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 18:34 (twenty years ago) link

I don't have either on vinyl but my roommate has Yeti. They're usually on eBay.

hstencil, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 19:53 (twenty years ago) link

"Yeti" on vinyl shouldn't really be that difficult to find, surely?

Mr Gossett, I like Wolf City shitloads, esp the last track (title eludes me) & I'll have to get it again soon I suppose. IIRC as well as the synth, they had an optigan, or its high-end spinoff (I forget the name, I'm very tired) as well. "Vive la Trance" I've never got around to buying, b/c a lot of the later stuff is so lame, and I always lumped it in w/that for some reason. Poss I shd pick a copy of that up as well.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:07 (twenty years ago) link

The early one I don't have is Carnival in Babylon; have everything else up through Wolf City. I've never really felt compelled to go out and get it but I'm sure I will someday. I still really love Tanz der Lemmings, as that was the first of theirs I heard. It always surprises me when people dis that one. I don't know if they're really listening to it or not. I fear it is due to some kind of knee-jerk reaction to the more superficially "prog-rock" sound, but there is nearly as much flat-out weirdness as on the earlier two. And "Toxicological Whispering" is their most archetypically "kraut-rock" sounding track!

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:17 (twenty years ago) link

I really like Tanz der Lemmings, I like the way all the tracks start off sounding really together, and then they fall apart as they play them. entropy in action, or something.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 20 November 2003 00:20 (twenty years ago) link

Mr Gossett, I like Wolf City shitloads, esp the last track (title eludes me)

Once again I agree with Pashmina, a worrying development for both of us I feel - title of the last track: "Sleepwalkers Timeless Bridge", written, sung and mostly played by everyone's favourite drummer/guitarist, Daniel Secundus Fichelscher. As for the objections to "Lemmings" being based on a "knee-jerk reaction to the more superficially "prog-rock" sound" - well, if we leave the knees out of it, the fact that it's more prog rocky than the earlier albums is indeed one of the main problems with it except that "Wolf City" is much more proggy and is much better.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:42 (twenty years ago) link

Dadaismus, they're both krautrock i'm told. I appreciate the tip re: wolk city. I think of Ad2 as having maybe three different golden or other periods according to three different crowds.
As for Can, i guess they had a long singular golden period, but I still can't buy their later '70s stuff. I've tried.

Can is fucking awesome, but you have to admit they are pretty damn awkward more often than not. Tago Mago is not exactly fun to listen to... and I love difficult/extreme music.

But I am definitely talking personal opinion here.

I was listening to Wolf City, Vive La Trance, and Made In Germany last night as my vinyl was being sold off. Wolf City is just so so good. Vive La Trance isn't perfect, but it's highlights.. holy shit. "Mozambique" and "Mimikry" are two of AD2's best songs. I'm not so much on the Made In Germany wagon, although there definitely are moments.

By Pyrogany 10th, they pretty much changed into a prog/pop rock band, but there are always good moments on all these albums all the way to and including Vortex. Only Human is definitely slept on.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 15:31 (fifteen years ago) link

I find this band perplexing. I like various chunks of their catalog but sometimes I am baffled that the term krautrock is used to encompass acts as disparate as Amon Duul II, Cluster, and Neu!, all of which seem wildly different for the most part. have had Wolf City and Yeti (never heard any of the Amon Duul stuff) and they're okay - not as goofy/fun/random as Faust. Kinda of a piece with Hawkwind but not as conceptually together.

I, Mr. Sneer Joy (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 22:36 (thirteen years ago) link

AD2 had more range than Hawkwind. Tanz der Lemminge, one of my favorite albums of all time, zigzags thru a panoply of psychedelic flavours. Restless Skylight Transistor Child goes from awkward Teutonic boogie to sitar-addled psychedelic folk idyll to distorted overdriven acid rawk to impending doom. The next track, Marilyn Monroe Memorial Church is a stagnating pool of echoey Goth bleakness.

I love Hawkwind and can see the comparison but I think it sells the Duuls short and ignores just how much they could do well.

kingkongvsbasedgodzilla (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 23:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Amon Duul II is def more all over the place than Hawkwind (who pretty much just cycled between one or two modes for the bulk of their early career). whether or not that's a virtue... eh, I'm undecided. I find the sprawl of Amon Duul II's stuff a bit off-putting.

I, Mr. Sneer Joy (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 23:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah well that sprawl is the essence of the band. No other band combining Jefferson Airplane, Incredible String Band, Velvet Underground and Night on Bald Mountain
