Is there a reason we've never had a Medeski Martin and Wood thread?

I haven't heard their latest album, but everything up through and including The Dropper is pretty great. That album especially gets them points for experimenting with their sound/production in a dirty and non-cheesy way.

I saw them live, and it was a whole big hippy-shake thing -- pretty good for a while, but then it made me sleepy. Overall, a fine outfit, but a little goes a long way for me.

Should I check out any MMW released in the last 10 years? I haven't even listened to the old stuff in that time period, but I see they're still producing. C/D S/D?

It's been way too long since I've listened to them. I remember liking Friday Afternoon in the Universe way better than Shack-man. I also liked It's a Jungle in Here but largely due to "Bemsha Swing" and "Syeeda's Song Flute", which were my first exposure to Monk or Coltrane. At the time, I thought Notes From Underground was sorta boring. I don't feel a need to go back and re-evaluate any of these, except maybe Friday Afternoon.

Saw MMW at GW Lisner during the first tour that they brought the DJ with them. The crowd was really weird because it was pretty evenly split between hippies and people literally wearing black turtlenecks. There was a lot of "shush"-ing going on that night. It was a great show to dance to though.

i remember really liking the production & vibe on 'combustication', and loving the playing on the record they did with john scofield.

the jungle breaks and scratching are so lol '90s, it's great.

my friend will is playing with billy martin in brooklyn on feb 26th, I'm sure that will be rad.

So is it wrong for me to love Free Magic? It feels a little bit like a guilty pleasure, especially since I had been listening to a lot of Sun Ra and Anthony Braxton recently.

have these guys had a reassessment yet. like the thinking man's dead and co or something

I don't think so but they should...seems like they would do well now that groove-based jazz is so ubiquitous and accepted, but aren't really active as a group, and had been focusing on their more avant-garde (and contemporary classical side)?
