i've tried and tried with that third album but it's never done anything for me. a couple of his early solo songs are top enough though ('tonight')

Certain folks esteem them highly, though, so once upon a time, I bought a $3 used copy of Searching for the Young Soul Rebels. It was ... not bad. Not great. A blurry appropriation of the idea of soul. Without much actual soul (whatever that means, and no, I don't wanna talk about it).

The song "Tell Me When My Light Turns Green", however, is/was great. Loved it the first time I heard it, and I love it still. The only song on the album with hooks, grit and fire.

But, as an American, I wouldn't know anything about that.

It wasn't as 'bottle frenzy' as reports would have it. I wouldn't go as far as "he won them over", but he did call out some of the bottle throwers to reasonable effect, and by the end there was a lot of the crowd singing "You'll never walk alone"..

I'm sure it's not their finest moment, but I'd like to see that again, so I'm sticking those 3 dvds of the 'Young oOnes' in my netflix list. OK!

The Blue Ox Babes were a pop group formed in 1981 by former Dexys Midnight Runners guitarist Kevin Archer together with his girlfriend Yasmin Saleh and former Dexy's keyboard player Andy Leek. Archer was keen to mix the soul sounds of his previous group with folk styles. To this end he recruited fiddle player Helen O'Hara to play on demo tapes of the new songs he had written. When former colleague Kevin Rowland heard these demo tapes he invited O'Hara to join Dexy's, and adopted a similarly folk-influenced sound for his own group.

By the time The Blue Ox Babes finally released their debut single "There's No Deceiving You" in 1988, the lineup was Archer (guitar and vocals), Saleh (backing vocals), Pete Wain (piano), Nick Smith (saxophone), Ian Pettitt (drums), former Dexy's members Steve 'Brennan' Shaw (fiddle), and Steve Wynne (bass). Two other singles, "Apples and Oranges" and "Walking On The Line" were released, but sales were disappointing and a planned album was shelved.

In 2009, their songs were released through Cherry Red Records including all their singles and additional unreleased songs.

Anyone heard this?

My mate got the cd. Some of it's pretty good. The 1st song doesn't soun d like dexys but some of the other stuff does. The album is from 88 but there's early demos added on at the end which are the ones Rowland heard and formed Dexys part 2.
Obviously not as good as Dexys but well worth checking out.

Don't agree with the overall assessment of SftYSR which I like throughout, but I agree that "Tell Me When My Light Turns Green" is the standout track here. Most gloriously giddy falsetto to appear outside a Housemartins record (and equalled by the HMs only in "The World's On Fire," I think) But gloriously giddy falsetto is locked in by the perfect horns here and thus doesn't sound frivolous, just uplifting. (For the Housemartins I think the rigidity of the rhythm guitar plays the same kind of role, and equally successfully.)

I really wasn't sure about Let The Record Show - never really found a way in despite it being theoretical catnip to me as 2nd-gen diaspora dexy's fan.

Been cautiously interested in this one - did not love the production of Coming Home, but that elated 'coming home to nothing at all' is A++ Rowland. And then hadn't followed the press around the My Beauty re-release, so was startled to see him back in a dress for the My Submission video. From the interview seems good that he's found his way back to that part of himself.

Also did not realise that there's a new version of Manhood on the album. I think that's the last Dexy's moment I truly truly love.

This album. Jesus eff.

I was not prepared for this new album to be as awful as it is.
