Sonic Youth - "Teen Age Riot"

I hate that album, I hate that band, I hate everything that they stand for... but I kinda like that song.

'natural disaster' by enon

ddd, Saturday, 2 November 2002 22:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm also curious as to what it is that makes that one song stand out from the other material. In the case of Everlong, (I'm trying to figure this out now) I think it's a certain richness to the sound in general that's not there in the other songs I've heard by them. It's something about the way the pacing of the song pulls me along instead of pushing me this way and that (am I irritated by being pushed around I wonder?). It's the way Dave Grohl is singing in a more restrained way and isn't all shouty or snarky (not that I unequivocably hate those two things mind you) but in this case it just works on more levels at once. I'd like to be more technical, but sadly...

What about the Foo Fighters cover of Gary Numan's Dawn in the Park? Did you hear that? it's good.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 2 November 2002 22:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Except I think I might like more Springsteen.

This is harder than I thought it would be, a lot of bands I think are mediocre have one great song but not so many I actually hate.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 2 November 2002 22:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, I was forgetting that Numan one, but I'm only halfway convinced that covers should count anyway. But it does make me wonder, does anyone think that this phenomenon could be based in part, on mere ignorance/neglect of the other material?

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 2 November 2002 22:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

may god forgive me but "she hates me" by puddle o' mudd gives me an idiot buzz i can't repress... i pray this will pass.

Yes/No Interlude (Yes/No Interlude), Saturday, 2 November 2002 22:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't actually *love* it, but Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" is intensely *meaningful* to me (the old Tory vs new Tory Lincolnshire thing I went through in another thread ages ago ... plus it sort of helps that Princess Diana liked them, so the imagery would have gone as far as to piss off our back-to-the-land-but-for-dubious-reasons heir to the throne)

Jewel's "You Were Meant For Me." But she didn't write that, did she?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 3 November 2002 00:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

I agree with Orinoco Flow.

And please forgive me for ALL of these:
In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins
Du Hast by Rammstein
Buddy Holly by Weezer
Only God Knows Why by Kid Rock
One Step Closer by Linkin Park
The Dope Show by Marilyn Manson

And that's the abbreviated list.. heh. I hardly ever listen to these songs. But I don't necessarily hate them as much as I do the artists' other songs.

Oh god yes "Against All Odds" by P Collins

hehe tim if i could help it i would. it's just such a pointy, sharp, sticky hook! and if i sing along i get this light feeling in my chest from hitting the high notes... singing this song feels like being in love! ;)

although I hate to admit it, I have found myself singing "night speaks to a woman" by trey anastasio. Generally speaking, I am indifferent not only to the artist but to the entire genre.

"Gone Away" by The Offspring. It sounds like Journey.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 3 November 2002 03:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Another U2 one. I really hate U2 but today I heard "With or Without You" and I thought that it was great. Until it got to near the end, and it was following conventional rock song dynamics, and the drums were pounding and the melody was lost. The beginning is good, though.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 3 November 2002 03:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

OK...this is a bad one. I like,er,no I love "Your Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion! Needless to say I cannot stand to even look at the lady, let alone listen to her god-awful music but this song moves me. I've been known to even sing along with it on occasion. I didn't even like "Titantic". I guess this falls under the guilty pleasure category. I'm almost embarrassed to submit this!

Jeffrey Koch (jeff k), Sunday, 3 November 2002 04:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Summer of '69 is one of my favorite songs ever. God help me.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 3 November 2002 04:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Another nominee: "Do You Feel Like We Do" by Peter Frampton. I know it's his most well-known song and it's also horrendously cheesy, but whenever I hear it I keep reimagining it as a Scorsese-style backdrop for a montage of illegal activity, thuggish violence and tragic, horrifying discoveries of dead people, which adds a whole other level to it. The worst examples of '70s rock hedonism can have that sort of feel to it for me.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 3 November 2002 06:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Executive Party" and "Executive Dance Party" by Andre Previn, on the Rollerball OST.

Eternal Flame by Bangles.

nathalie (nathalie), Sunday, 3 November 2002 10:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

My token Celine Dion song is "Falling Into You", which is pretty subtle by her standards. I like it rather than love it though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 3 November 2002 12:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Of Celine, "Think Twice" has the best hook but I still don't like it much.

Bic Runga - Drive

kinski (kinski), Sunday, 3 November 2002 14:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've mentioned a couple of mine previously in other threads:

Dan Fogelberg- "Another Auld Lang Syne"
Partly nostalgia (introduced to it by my college roommate, and we would sing it the rest of that year, which was one of the best for me), partly the Harry Chapin feel. It's like a bourgeois version of "Taxi". I like the theme of exs running into each other unexpectedly, the mixture of bittersweet. Has admittedly tawdry moments (the "laugh until we cried" part in the grocery store, "the snow...turned into rain" punchline, the Kenny G sax touches at the end), but that only seem to add to the magic. I've loathed most, if not all, of the rest of what I've heard from him: "Leader of the Band" and "Longer Than" are particularly dreadful. Though Chris Hillman from The Byrds covered one of his songs which I also liked, "Morning Sky".

Wham- "Freedom"
I have a respect for "Careless Whisper", but the rest of their catalog for me ranges from indifference to major annoyance. "Freedom" is a great song, though. I like the little details: the Motownish rhythm section, immensely singable chorus, and that regal trumpet solo and rhythm guitar at the end.

Journey- "Don't Stop Believing"
I don't like Steve Perry's voice, it's that pure and simple. If I did, there would be probably more I liked by them. This is their best song, by a long shot.

Peter Frampton- "I'm in You"
Lyrically laughable ("You can't buy, what we made, you and I...") and I wouldn't blame anyone if they couldn't make it past the title, but the music to this ballad is stunning. Striding, cautiously descending piano chords that moodily shift from minor to major and back again, combined with light string backing...it really makes the song.

Night Ranger- "Don't Tell Me You Love Me"
Particularly, I love the duelling guitar solos exchanged in the middle of the song (they should have used these for the Bill and Ted movies)--goofy and sweet, shredding before shredding became completely correlated with hair spray to move units. I mean Brad Gillis toured with Ozzy before this stint, right? What more legitimacy does one need...And the chorus is pure Asia. :)

Bryan Adams- "This Time"
Don't LOVE this one, but I think it is a likeable pop song, that
doesn't overstay its welcome (I have to admit, I don't even really like "Cuts Like a Knife" or "Heaven," two songs that I think probably have more proponents than this one).

The Bee Gees- "How Deep Is Your Love"
I was about 5 years old when SNFever was in full manic effect and this was perpetually on the radio. As one might expect from a 5 year-old boy into KISS and the Jim Rice-era Red Sox, I completely hated it--the pale washes of electric piano, the mewling vocals, etc. How ironic that today, after being subjected through my teens and early adulthood to endless 70s/retro/disco revivals where "Stayin' Alive" and such is dragged out yet again, this is pretty much the only song by them I can bear to listen to them without complaint. As with the other tunes listed above, bad lyrics from what I can make out of them (hey, it's the Bee Gees), but the music is actually fairly sophisticated for such a major commercial pop tune.

4'39'' by John Cage. Though I have never listened to it (kind of difficult to hear it) and I probably got the title wrong. But that's probably the best he has ever done. Silence is sexy sometimes.

Into the Groove covered by Sonic Youth
Mercy Seat covered by Johnny Cash (though I don't hate Nick Cave and only hated Johnny Cash up till this album)

Ooh, I really like "The Bad Touch" and hate Bloodhound Gang. ALSO "My Console" by Eiffel 85 or whatever they are called is fantastic. ALSO "Separate Ways" is the greatest song of all time, but Journey are the worst band ever. And the video is pure glory.
