i was thinking about the old greenspun threads that are going to be cut loose, and i wondered if it would be a good idea to either just remove them all completely, or put a link to the new thread and then close them, preventing further posting - although that might be labour intensive?

What I'm going to do Gareth is close a thread and post a link as and when old threads get googled.

If I was feeling like a mentalist I could probably write a script that automatically submitted redirects to every thread. Shall I? (It may take a while to get through all of them)

Sounds like it would be handy, but only if you feel like it. :-)

Tom, if you click the administer site option at the bottom of the page you can post this is all there (post board specific stuff from the admin board page)

one small thing?: "and it was decided that ILE and ILM should make contingency plans in the event of the Greenspun server."

+ going down permanently. etc.

Ron, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

also might add to 'do i have to wait to post' section: "It would be appreciated if you made some effort to search for old threads which might be an appropriate place for your thoughts rather than immediately starting a new thread." I am of course fully supportive of NOT jumping on people for double-posting, etc. Witness much bad attitude on MeFi. But it seems good practice to at least do one or two searches before you ask a new question.

Ron, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

this could include a link to the search threads, and instructions for googling the domain name only, etc.

Tom, I've changed the front page layout a bit, but I think we need a paragraph of introductory text to put at the top where the FT link now is, and maybe a tagline/short explanation for by the two main boards. The layout of this page is very flexible.

fifteen years pass...

However: Please do not revive old threads if you have nothing new to add to them. Bumping a thread merely because it makes you laugh, or you wish to bring it to other users' attention, is bad form, generally speaking.

wtf

three years pass...

bump

the FAQ could probably use a caveat at the top noting how non-updated it is

(I know this has been suggested before, just mentioning while it’s being touched. mb date new entries too?)
