dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:27 (nineteen years ago) link

That Ghibli set that HIVIONE has looks NASSSTY.

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:29 (nineteen years ago) link

HKFlix for anything Hong Kong (and increasingly Japan as well).

I wonder if this is the one that Nicole got a while back! She mentioned this and I was most jealous.

I have the $40 set that you can get on eBay ($70 at Amoeba) which is great and compact, but does not have Spirited or The Cat Returns..

(x-post) Dean? - I got this one. I just received it at work today so I haven't tried it out yet. It's SMALL!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:41 (nineteen years ago) link

(x-post) Yeah, that Ghibli set looks great. Has Nausicaa on it, no?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks for the suggestions. Anything not Hong Kong/Martial Arts/Anime related would be cool. Particularly sites that sell European Cinema/Cult/Obscure films.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Hmmm...have you tried Kino?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't, but in NYC, Kim's and Virgin sell them

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Thnx, Ned!

Gabbneb - I'm actually heading over to Kim's after work. Thanks!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I know of some good bootleg sites for cult stuff ...

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:09 (nineteen years ago) link

dean? - hit me off list with some of those, please?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:12 (nineteen years ago) link

or post 'em here.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:13 (nineteen years ago) link

superh@ppyfun.com - good selection, fast response, no cover art
5minutes0nline.com - okay selection, slow response, pricey, good cover art

Those are the two that I would recommend most.

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:21 (nineteen years ago) link

if you go to superh@ppy, make sure to register with them ... they send you passwords for things that aren't publicly available.

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:21 (nineteen years ago) link

http://www.xploitedcinema.com has an excellent selection of euro cinema.

as a matter of fact, amazon.co.uk actually is nice because you dont have to pay VAT so the prices listed are about 17 percent higher than you will actually pay. shipping is expensive though (obviously)

Anyone have any suggestions as to where I can buy the UK PAL DVD of 'Brass Eye' in Los Angeles? Amoeba are out and I just finished 'The Day Today' and am CRAVING. Cinefile has it, but it's wayyy overpriced there.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I use GERMAN AMAZON.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I will do you a favour, spencer, if you don't mind waiting a couple of weeks.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I still want to know if that Malata player Jay Vee got is good. I may be in the market for a region free player soon and for $100 the price is right.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I very highly recommend this Malata player which works perfectly and is only about $55 (do a google search for a $5 buy.com coupon)

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=90135144&loc=111&sp=1

-it does proper PAL to NTSC (including anamorphic)
-progressive scan
-component outs (and rca and s-video too)

does not do:
-overscan correction
-no optical audio (although it says so in the description)
-no 'on' light, which takes a little getting used to.
-full function remote is funky (but works great)

here's an in depth review: http://207.136.67.23/film/DVDReview2/malata.htm

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:42 (nineteen years ago) link

RJG, I emailed you about this potential and very exciting favor!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 00:02 (nineteen years ago) link

my malata 393 acts a little wonky sometimes and i have to switch back and forth from s-video to component, but it always works. i am patient.

As well you should be -- I have it and, well, goddamn.

Spencer, my brother is coming over next week - I could get him to bring it maybe. ?

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 01:58 (nineteen years ago) link

haha, no that's ok. I might just break down and order it - it's 8 pounds at Amazon.co.uk - I'm going to see what else I need from the old world and maybe do a shipment.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:41 (nineteen years ago) link

fourteen years pass...

Has anyone recently purchased an all-region player? Looking to invest in one. (Bonus points if you can recommend any particularly cool DVD sets that are only available in PAL format.)

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 9 November 2018 13:34 (five years ago) link

Am very happy w/ this all region Sony Blu player, which plays everything (it's probably a lot cheaper on US Amazon too):

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Blu-Ray-Players-Recorders/BDP-S3700-Region-Blu-ray-Player-Regions-Black/B01CGLS2V4/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1541772074&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=sony+all+region+blu+ray&psc=1

There are thousands of Region 2 only DVD issues (just as there thousands of Region 1 only sets) - have a browse of the Indicator, Arrow, Artifical Eye and Eureka/Masters of Cinema sites for key discs.

Ward Fowler, Friday, 9 November 2018 14:05 (five years ago) link

I'd recommend a poke around the forums at blu-ray.com, Simon, if you haven't been already. I'm sure there are some good discussions/recommendations there.

I've definitely considered this. Even though the boutique labels are cranking out blu-rays of all kinds of obscure stuff (and labels like Arrow are getting much better about putting out stuff that's all region or at least not locked for one particular region), there's still so much that's only available on DVD and/or has never been imported to North America. Plus I have a handful of non-region 1 DVDs that I've bought by accident and can only watch on my laptop and it's real annoying.

Ham Beats All Meat! (Old Lunch), Friday, 9 November 2018 14:13 (five years ago) link

it was actually the Rohmer thread that got me thinking bout this - there's a PAL Six Moral Tales set for like 30 bucks CAD versus the OOP Criterion set which is currently running for ten times that :/

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 9 November 2018 14:56 (five years ago) link

thx for the recs WF

I also have a Sony BDP-S3700, I bought the modded version from Amazon (US) for $160. Quite like it actually... decent interface and remote, plays everything I have so far. I use it mainly for R2 releases from the UK that are unavailable in the US (like Requiem for a Village, or Robin Redbreast... UK folk horror stuff). And sometimes the UK version of stuff is a hell of a lot cheaper, even taking shipping costs into account, when you buy from Amazon UK. Especially when the pound is weak.

NP, SH - I think there's a virtually complete Rohmer set out there too that was issued in France, but I'm not sure if it has English language subs (perhaps your French is better than mine!)

I don't know if this Arrow Rohmer bu-ray set is region-locked, but is probably the one to go for (their very similar Rivette collection is exemplary):
