"Apart from the interior the Spasatel is currently finished and is waiting in a factory in Nizhny Novgorod for some money to finish it. The Spasatel is designed to locate and rescue people at sea from ships, aircraft or oil rigs and platforms. It can transport up to 150 people, but it can hold up to 500 rescued people."

Totally classic of course. I love that the dreaded KM was nicknamed the "Caspian Sea Monster"

It's cool, but it's got nothing on the Chance Vought V-173, or "Flying Flapjack."

The V-173 is a straight-up airplane though and not a ground-effect craft.

YEA KEEP IT ON TOPIC

Whiskeytown Littlecock (ex machina), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 18:23 (nineteen years ago) link

what is a ground-effect craft?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 18:40 (nineteen years ago) link

what is a ground-effect craft?

The ekranoplans work on the same principle as hovercrafts, but instead of using a skirt to keep the air cushion inside they use aerodynamics to force it.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 18:43 (nineteen years ago) link

whoa, I thought this was different than hovercrafts

Whiskeytown Littlecock (ex machina), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I used to play in a band that had a guitarist who was obsessed with Ekranoplans, we wrote two long songs, 'Caspian Sea Monster' and 'Spasatel' and released a 12 inch Ekranoplan EP and included photos and information on ground effect aircraft.
