So why do people like you?

I actually played this game with friends one New Year (with the 'what we don't like about each other' bit too). It was a pretty bad idea. I didn't really recognise any of my supposedly good points. Supposedly I am uninhibited about being myself. I fear most people would say something about 'quirky'.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:23 (twenty years ago) link

I listen to people, and I'm always there when they need help and comfort - i.e. I'm a loser with a low self-esteem.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:25 (twenty years ago) link

Haha.

I think I'm liked because I'm kind, empathic, sensitive - all that guff - and funny and a good conversationalist (once I've got over being shy.)

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:27 (twenty years ago) link

I'M LIKE A SAND-WEDGE BABY, I HAVE AN OPEN FACE!

David can make his face into a heart.

I have no idea why people like me, honestly. I think I have certain good qualities, but I don't know if that has anything to do with people liking me.

Larcole (Nicole), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:28 (twenty years ago) link

I'm quite funny, I'm intelligent, I can usually contribute to a conversation without being obnoxious, I get my round in.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:28 (twenty years ago) link

same as Tom...except that last one, heh

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:34 (twenty years ago) link

I tell worse jokes than anyone I know. I've had competitions on this, and I've always won.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:38 (twenty years ago) link

Reasonably generous, good conversationalist, lots of stories, good listener, wild sense of humour (can be relied on to make people wince&laugh at the same time), unafraid to talk about anything, open and honest. Of course Emma and all my mates will disagree.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:42 (twenty years ago) link

They like my hair, and my breath is pretty good.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:46 (twenty years ago) link

Funny I suppose, conversation is probably what I do best. Always up for a party, I'm really enthusiastic about nights out and things and I reckon it's infectious enough.

also my parents are always away and my house has a part which is great for raves.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:54 (twenty years ago) link

In certain groups, I have confidence bordering (well, bordering in the same way Germany bordered the Sudetenland in 1939) on pushiness, which is handy as they tend to be groups filled with people quieter and less assertive than me. So I do a lot of talking, make a few funnies, take control of things that need taking control of. I'm thinking of Sinister, basically, though not old-skool, natch.

I don't know if that means people *like* me, exactly, but they listen. And that's good enough for me.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:58 (twenty years ago) link

The above is not why I like you Mark.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:01 (twenty years ago) link

Do you like me because I'm like a sand-wedge, err, baby?

David. (Cozen), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:04 (twenty years ago) link

i really have no damn clue what the answer to the thread title is for me.. i guess i can come across as quite enthusiastic and passionate at times and i know my way around a good one liner but beyond that i just couldn't say..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:09 (twenty years ago) link

Because I don't spit on the rug?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:14 (twenty years ago) link

Mark C and Tuomas' first post seem to cover me fairly well. Which is eerie.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:16 (twenty years ago) link

I am very, very wealthy.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:19 (twenty years ago) link

Mark C sounds quite like me too.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:20 (twenty years ago) link

i can't think of anything right now.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:33 (twenty years ago) link

I like everyone I have met who has posted on this thread so far. I think the basic reason for this is you have all been friendly, interesting, sociable and have treated me and most other people in the way in which we would like to be treated.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:39 (twenty years ago) link

I'm a friendly enough person in real life.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:41 (twenty years ago) link

i would say that i am supportive/understanding, accomodating, generous & quite a warm person. I would say these were nice enough qualities for people to like me.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:44 (twenty years ago) link

Cuz it was I who let the dogs out!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:44 (twenty years ago) link

I'm smart and passionate and, in my own peculiar way, loyal and caring.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:47 (twenty years ago) link

I don't say much so they think I'm smarter than I am and they think I'm more like them than I am. I don't know, I only know people who are into music really, they're just about all male. I don't mix with many people at the moment and I feel a great lack of feedback about myself.

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 13:16 (twenty years ago) link

i'm funny and warm. love to party. i know a lot of random shyt, so i can be interesting.

praying mantis (praying mantis), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:06 (twenty years ago) link

Mantis, you aren't someone with a problem with their self-image, are you? ;)

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:26 (twenty years ago) link

I'm passionate, loyal, caring, am a complete dork and not afraid to exhibit it and when the situation calls for it, am super-fun-party-girl.

My real answer: Fuck, I don't know.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:28 (twenty years ago) link

I've no idea. I'm not convinced they do.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:29 (twenty years ago) link

i am loyal to friends, honest, and i have a good heart.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:29 (twenty years ago) link

That N. feared being called quirky is definitely one of the things to like about him :)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:35 (twenty years ago) link

But there's so much to dislike.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:40 (twenty years ago) link

Hmmm, I'm not sure how to answer questions like this. I hate to be presumptuous. I guess I'm quite affable, and reliable. And I have a sense of the absurb. I'd like to think I was easy to talk to and quite positive about most things, and that people liked me for this.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:07 (twenty years ago) link

I think I'm a kind person, always ready to do just about anything for friends, quite generous. I care about people I like, and I hope that comes across to people. I hope I'm fairly amusing, intelligent and interesting, so quite entertaining. I basically like people, and I'm interested in most people.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:09 (twenty years ago) link

I was going to come up with something, but Martin has pretty much nailed it right there. Except I may not be doing as good a job as I once was.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:17 (twenty years ago) link

I laugh a lot. Really loudly and obnoxiously.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:18 (twenty years ago) link

because I rock.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:19 (twenty years ago) link

i am handsome, witty erudite and successful

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:21 (twenty years ago) link

because i'm pimp

Mack Daddy Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:26 (twenty years ago) link

You're using pimp as an adjective=I love you.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:28 (twenty years ago) link

People just pretend to like me so they can get free restaurant meals.

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:49 (twenty years ago) link

I like you Paul and I've never once asked for a meal.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:50 (twenty years ago) link

i can be talked into doing legal work pro bono (i.e., FREE!) if i like you. which may come in handy the way certain NYC FAPers carry on.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:52 (twenty years ago) link

Cos I talk really fast, but I also like to listen.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:54 (twenty years ago) link

My mom pays them to.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:56 (twenty years ago) link

I like Paul because he knows tiny horses.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:58 (twenty years ago) link

My mom uses your newspaper clippings for kitty litter, Horace. ;)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:04 (twenty years ago) link

I like Paul b/c he knows how to get to the balcony seats in a crowded theater.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:12 (twenty years ago) link

That wasn't supposed to sound like a cry for attention. But now my heart-cockles are all warmed. Free meals all around!

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:27 (twenty years ago) link

What about the tiny horses?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:36 (twenty years ago) link

They don't really behave well in restaurants, but we can bring them if you insist.

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:39 (twenty years ago) link

If they wear their little slippers I think it will be ok.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:40 (twenty years ago) link

I think because I'm funny, and fairly smart. I'm reasonably sure it's not my looks. I know lots of useful trivia. I still try to trade on having been an alt.rock DJ on a community radio station in Tampa for 12 years, but I don't think that really works anymore.

I have really horrible self esteem.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:53 (twenty years ago) link

i can turn my face into a heart. and vice-versa.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:00 (twenty years ago) link

you are the emotional equiv of T-1000

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:08 (twenty years ago) link

I can be fun, when I'm not busy trying to act "too cool" - which I've been accused of doing once in awhile. Though most of my friends are phonies as well, so maybe they like me specifically for that trait.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:30 (twenty years ago) link

She likes meh. Talkin' 'bout she needs meh. She wants to see meh. Cuz I'm da shit.

N*E*R*Dalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:32 (twenty years ago) link

but now it looks like im fisting for compliments, so i'll add that i'm usually amusing when i'm not in a grumpy mood, and i'm embarassing when im drunk.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:39 (twenty years ago) link

good luck wrt the fisting.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:40 (twenty years ago) link

oh whoops.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:41 (twenty years ago) link

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:47 (twenty years ago) link

I hear people like me cause I have a great ass.

Julian Asablancas (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 21 August 2003 18:41 (twenty years ago) link

I never steal anything they miss.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 21 August 2003 19:08 (twenty years ago) link

I don't know, this is a really hard question unless people have come right up and said "This is what I like about you." I know they must like something because I have friends, but I certainly wouldn't ask!

Maria (Maria), Friday, 22 August 2003 04:02 (twenty years ago) link

I've been told by practically everybody I know that I have a good heart, which I guess could be a reason why the people who like me, like me. I've also heard the word "endearing" being used to describe me, which is a rather good quality to have I feel.

Thank goodness people have told me this, because otherwise I couldn't have come up with anything.

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 22 August 2003 04:16 (twenty years ago) link

because i bathe and i don't smell like rotten fruit.

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 22 August 2003 04:23 (twenty years ago) link
