I forgot to vote for it :-(

I like it but not that much
― Juice Should Be Sterliized (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:01 (twelve years ago) link
I was hoping that "Jill Hives" would make the top 10. Oh well. (It was my #3)
― justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:08 (twelve years ago) link
It danced with the top 10 for a long time until the last couple days worth of ballots came in.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:10 (twelve years ago) link
Same with If We Wait. Its 4 #1 votes came in early and I thought for sure it would be top 10. It only dropped to 13 late.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:11 (twelve years ago) link
I was one of those 4. surely it ended up w/ the highest per vote average?
― iatee, Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:12 (twelve years ago) link
Ok, so I think Jill Hives is more restrained than I want it to be. That's all.
If We Wait, however, really grabs the stars melodically and lyrically, for me at least.
― Art Arfons (La Lechera), Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:13 (twelve years ago) link
if we wait was my numero uno

OK this is too low. My favorite by far on Bee Thousand. Really surprised it had no #1's, I was deliberating between this and what I ended up putting at #1 til the last minute.
― justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:17 (twelve years ago) link
We're finally here, or something like that.
― Art Arfons (La Lechera), Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:28 (twelve years ago) link
Hold up:
Disarm the settlersThe new drunk driversHave hoisted the flagWe are with you in your anger
"Settlers"? or "Sexless"?
― fear itself (Ówen P.), Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:33 (twelve years ago) link
Echos Myron is a song I used to really like at the height of my GBV obsession in the 90s, but consider to be really middle-of-the-pack now.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:33 (twelve years ago) link
definitely sexless
― ledge, Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:34 (twelve years ago) link
I always thought it was "Setlist" until I read the lyrics.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:34 (twelve years ago) link
thought "gold star..." would be higher for some reason? (it was my #2)
xp it's totally "settlers"!
― queen latifah approximately (donna rouge), Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:34 (twelve years ago) link
"Disarm The Sexless" was a often-used teenage username of mine iirc, uh oh, really? "Settlers"?
― fear itself (Ówen P.), Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:37 (twelve years ago) link
(no ribbing pls)
feels heretical to say but I'm not all that into Echos Myron.
― skip, Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:38 (twelve years ago) link
Well I always heard it as settlers, but don't have it from an "official source"
― Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:38 (twelve years ago) link
i had at least two GBV-related screen names: AlwaysCrushMe and uh something else
― queen latifah approximately (donna rouge), Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:39 (twelve years ago) link
i also once had my AOL account suspended because i put the lyrics of "hit" in my profile ("faggots" and "shit" were both violations of terms of service)

another great song that i didnt vote for

Echos Myron used to be my favorite GBV song. I wanted to open a record store and call it Burrito's Myron. Ha, a record store. That would never work these days.
― Jeff, Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:54 (twelve years ago) link
Maybe I'll just forego the business of posting the top 10 and let everyone imagine the top 10 as they'd like it to be? No, I won't. I'll kick it off in a little bit.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:55 (twelve years ago) link
Don't Stop Now - not one of my favorites. I like the early version on Devil Between My Toes.

Okay so...I imagine people just don't have much to say about that one anymore other than "it's good" (and are choosing not to say anything instead). On to #9!
9. "The Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory" (Bee Thousand, 1994) [432 points, 18 votes, 1 #1 vote]

Ironmen is another one of those tracks that could have been iconic for any other group but is almost a dime a dozen for Pollard.
Love the vocal delivery on Goldheart and the flute(?) in the background. It does remind me of Tortoise Brand Pot Scrubbing Cleaner though...

i forgot to vote for that one too, yikes
― ciderpress, Thursday, 29 September 2011 17:27 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, not much to say once you get up to these top ones. This was on my ballot. It's a good song, my second favorite on Bee Thousand.

ha at the reunion shows my wife was like "why does everyone go nuts for this song? it's so slow." weirdo prog singalong. love this shit.
― dmr, Thursday, 29 September 2011 17:29 (twelve years ago) link
I just checked them now 'cos I'd always heard it as 'settlers' - however I now realise I was totally wrong about the second line, which I was 100% convinced was "the neutron drivers"!

RE: Teenage FBII like that the DTC youtube wasn't posted. The overwhelming simplicity of the bass and rhythm guitar on that song distracts me to the point of not liking the song at all

I just remembered listening to "Ironmen" again how much I love the lyric "happy little babies with red cheeks / you will rock them gently out of sync".

Just heard the original 'Teenage FBI' for the first time. How can anyone like this better?!? Where is that phat keyboard? It's only good because the song is brilliant.

Okay, imagine hearing it in 1997 for the first time and waiting two years to get a big, great-sounding studio version of it...and then being met with a corny sub-Rentals keyboard pop romp.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 September 2011 17:45 (twelve years ago) link
I actually think Smothered drags a bit. Still a good song but not one of my faves.

XP Man, that keyboard is the best thing in the GBV catalog!
But you might be right, because I was just going to post this:
