Yes, i think they'll finish 4th ahead of Liverpool and Spurs.

Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 08:24 (twelve years ago) link

Not even sixth. Think they will finish 7th or 8th.

Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 08:34 (twelve years ago) link

Voted Sixth

5th, above Liverpool and below Spurs.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 09:32 (twelve years ago) link

see a lot of you seem to be saying some combo of 2 manchester clubs and chelsea have got the top 3 locked down and i wd never assume that as a certainty

Dios mio! This kid is FUN to hit! (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 09:35 (twelve years ago) link

I drew it up on that basis, yes, but I can't really see it any other way. If there's someone else in the top 3, it'll be Spurs.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 09:50 (twelve years ago) link

obv i wouldn't bet against the scenario but time and football make fools of us all.

Bees Against Racism (Tom D.), Monday, 20 May 2013 16:18 (ten years ago) link

Finishing fourth is more than good. All but three teams in the league dream of it in a great year, and that three inhabit a fantasyland.

I think it's great tbh; not quite up there with dragging that shower to third last season, but as good a feat of management as anything in the league this year bar Ferguson.

Good in the bigger picture? It probably doesn't much matter imo, because you're on the brink of great wealth regardless. Its greatest import might be in stopping Spurs tapping in - you're fighting them from higher ground again next year, rather than level ground.

For everyone else it's rubbish though, oligarchy cemented in place that little bit more.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 May 2013 16:35 (ten years ago) link

The one bad thing was not getting a second against Newcastle though. I gather you were terrible yesterday so it's a bit having-your-cake-and-eating-it, but to have third so close for much of the game but not really going for it is not a winners' mentality.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 May 2013 16:41 (ten years ago) link

i guess i live in a fantasyland - or at least the past - when we played lovely football and actually won things - now we play far more pragmatic/functional football simply to 'keep up', somehow, w/ the big spenders (who we never seem to beat any more, when it actually matters) - steve bould's influence does actually seem to have been felt in the way arsenal were organised/went about their business for the last third of the season - and that basically amounts to a return of the repressed (ie george graham)

i know this is the simpering of the entitled

Ward Fowler, Monday, 20 May 2013 16:43 (ten years ago) link

Wenger's so thin in that photo in the OP. It reminds me a little of the end of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

The TV money, the prestige (selling kits, one hopes) and attatractiveness of the CL to players means that it's not a bad thing over all.

Only a friendly but Arsenal are four nil up at half time vs Benfica with Sanogo getting a hat trick and Campbell scoring the other. Benfica clearly not too fussed at this point but they're looking good.

The meeting was a stage-managed affair, although one shareholder did succeed in putting the board on the spot with the direct question about whether Wenger had the money to spend on the extra defender. His efforts were met with applause from the floor. But Sir Chips Keswick, the chairman, performed the final, verbal swerve of the day.

“I don’t think that it’s my wish or intention to double-guess what Arsène Wenger wants to do,” Keswick said. “As you know, your board backs him 100%. If he has a plan, we back him. If he doesn’t have a plan, we keep quiet. So don’t let’s be in a muddle about who calls the shots about football. It is not the chairman, it is not the fans, it is Mr Arsène Wenger.”

Keswick then turned to Wenger. “Arsène, I have embarrassed you. Do you wish to say anything else?” he said.

“No,” Wenger replied.

Alisher Usmanov, the Arsenal owner and the richest man in Russia, has bought the Nobel prize that was sold by James Watson, one of three people who won the prize for discovering the DNA double helix. Usmanov will now give it straight back to him — leaving Watson with the medal as well as the record-breaking $4.1 million that Usmanov bought it for.

The sale of the medal — which cost Usmanov $4.8 million including commission — set a record for the sale of such a medal and was the first time one has been sold by a living recipient. Usmanov said today that he would give him back the medal as well as giving him the cash for it.

Usmanov said that he had been motivated to buy and return the medal to avoid Watson having to sell it. He values Watson's work because of his contribution to cancer research, the disease fro mwhich Usmanov's father died, he said.
