I saw a bodum press at a thrfit store that was just the plunger and the metal frame - someone had broken the glass. dunno why they were even trying to sell it

dayo, Monday, 26 September 2011 18:08 (twelve years ago) link

Because you can get replacement liners for like $15, probably.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Monday, 26 September 2011 18:08 (twelve years ago) link

metal version is double walled right, think it's called a columbia press - http://www.amazon.com/Bodum-Columbia-Stainless-Thermal-17-Ounce/dp/B002AJ9JII/ref=pd_sim_k3

bodum one is obscenely expensive, I think I've seen a generic one for like $20-30 but couldn't tell you where, maybe try sweet maria's?

dayo, Monday, 26 September 2011 18:09 (twelve years ago) link

I have the enormous 12-cup Bodum press with glass liner. It's big enough that it stays pretty hot for the time it takes me to drink 30 oz of coffee, and I'm only ("only") on my 2nd liner.

the one i have is smaller than that - it's about the same size as the standard glass ones, makes about 3 cups. it was a wedding present (from ILX's Jenny and Jeff!) and so I don't know how expensive it is.

so you can, laurel! so you can...

dayo, Monday, 26 September 2011 18:11 (twelve years ago) link

haha bodum sells this

http://www.sweetmarias.com/sweetmarias/coffee-brewers/french-presses/bodum-nero-neoprene-coat-for-bodum-8-cup-coffee-maker.html

I mean if you're stupid enough to pay for that you're probably too stupid to realize you can use a towel to do the same thing

dayo, Monday, 26 September 2011 18:12 (twelve years ago) link

uh they say in the description you can use a towel to do the same thing:

This is Bodum's answer to helping your french press retain heat while you steep your coffee. There's nothing wrong with using a towel, something homemade or just letting your press run around nude. It's just nice to have an item that works perfectly. And in everyone's favorite color....black!

sorry I stopped reading at "neoprene coat"

am0n I wld maybe recommend getting an electric grinder? that way you wont get "upgrade-itis"

― dayo, Monday, September 26, 2011 1:12 PM

like what kind? i already have an electric blade grinder but its only got 3 settings so its prob a p.o.s.

I guess this is a debased version of the Viking method: http://www.quora.com/What-are-some-of-the-best-personal-Aeropress-recipes

― lukas, Monday, September 26, 2011 2:04 PM

it doesn't involve a risky inversion step which gives some people so much trouble

lol who are these idiots who find the inverted method "risky" and troublesome

I just got a bodum bistro and it's fine

http://www.amazon.com/Bodum-Bistro-Electric-Coffee-Grinder/dp/B0043095WW

people are also fond of baratza refurbs

http://www.baratza.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?search=action&category=BRFB

ppl also rate the capresso infinity

http://www.amazon.com/Capresso-560-01-Infinity-Grinder-Black/dp/B0000AR7SY

all 3 are about $80

the knocks ppl have against the bodum bistro are that you can only operate it for 20 seconds every 5 minutes, which seems fine to me. maybe the capresso is different.

also according to the manual you can only adjust the grind setting when grinding, don't adjust when not grinding. which also seems fine to me.

I'm happy.

dayo, Monday, 26 September 2011 18:50 (twelve years ago) link

I've used my Capresso Infinity for about five years now for both espresso (actual full-pressure espresso) and french press, and I've been very happy with it. Obviously it could have finer gradations of grind settings but no $80 grinder will be any better on this front. The only other complaint I have is that the chamber that the grinds fall into is awkward to work with, and also there's a tendency for grinds to come out onto the counter somehow.

When I got my espresso machine, the guy at Zabar's, from whence I bought the grinder, said it was the cheapest machine that would do an adequate job of giving me a decent espresso grind.

one month passes...

guys i broke down and got an electric coffee maker with a timer and i kind of like it. the coffee's not as good but i save time in the morning and it stays hot. good on non-work days bc i can sit and drink all the coffee slooooooow. then i found that my french press had a crack in it so i threw it out :/

tunnel joe (harbl), Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:02 (twelve years ago) link

like it was really taking me forever to do the whole french press process every day, i never noticed before. i think i'm late about half as many times per week as i used to be.

tunnel joe (harbl), Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:02 (twelve years ago) link

yeah my bf never uses the french press in the mornings cuz its tooo sloooow

it takes me about 10 min to make coffee, 5 min to heat the water + 5 min for the pourover

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:05 (twelve years ago) link

if i set the timer before i go to bed it takes me literally 0 minutes to make coffee in the morning

tunnel joe (harbl), Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:06 (twelve years ago) link

that sounds nice!

unfortunately I can't make myself be one of those people who can get up and be out the door in 10 minutes. if I have somewhere to be at 8 I'll likely get up at 6. true story :(

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:13 (twelve years ago) link

i am worse than that, it was taking me 2 hours to get ready and i don't even do anything special. it was necessary for me to make coffee faster

tunnel joe (harbl), Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:25 (twelve years ago) link

i am so slow in the mornings. the only thing keeping me from getting an electric coffee maker is lack of counter space. but yeah, it really would be nice on the weekends.

Put your kettle on with the minimum amount of water needed so it heats faster. While it's heating, put your toast or whatever in, clean out your grinds from the day before (if you haven't), grind your coffee. The actual steeping for a press is only 3-4 mins, and I find that the pouring for my pour-over, one cup, is maybe 2 mins (I get everything else ready while it's heating).

my protip: electric kettle heats way faster than stove. it still takes me 10 minutes minimum to make my coffee though...

hmm - your grind size may be too coarse. try it with a finer grind and see if you like it better that way? the finer the grind is, the more flavorful the coffee gets, but there is a point of no return where the grind is too fine and the water refuses to percolate

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 11:34 (twelve years ago) link

i mean i feel like even 2-3 minutes is too many minutes. and its minutes that you need to spend doing something. its nice to have a ritual when i have the time, and the coffee is indisputably better, but... i posted this in the other thread

yeah its funny, the aeropress is so great and quick but i need like 2-3 minutes to grind w/ my hand-crank so theres kind of no net gain in time saved. i should post this on the other thread where harbl was talking about how nice it is to have no wait time for a cup of coffee, especially if youre just using it to wake yourself up.

i think this is why k-cups are okay by me--i never found them to be undrinkably horrible when i was working in an office with one (in fact some of the k-cup blends were surprisingly tasty)--and whatever flava sacrifices u make are counterbalanced by the speed of it

this is the thing about being "into" coffee (not that i really am, not at dayo/hurting levels), sometimes you just need it to open your eyes and could gaf about how it tastes

yeah having an electric grinder has definitely improved my coffee making experience.

I'm gonna scale back and say that I think it's permissible to have two coffees, one bag of whole bean for when you wanna enjoy the coffee and another pre-ground bag for when you want convenience

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:46 (twelve years ago) link

i might hire a servant just for coffee purposes

Hmm. I started with a very fine grind and it was a little gross actually, like maybe overextracted. I'm pretty happy with it now although I could probably go a notch finer.

I'm enjoying some french press Ethiopian Harrar atm, not a coffee I want all the time but has a unique flavor

i am tired and i was thinking about what a shitty week/month this has been and i forgot to tell i hate coffee that on monday i was ready to be early for work and set up the coffee maker for 6 am. i got in the shower at like 5:50. when i got out i heard HISSSSSSSSS BLORP CHCHCHCHHCHCCH which is not how it's supposed to sound. i ran to the kitchen to discover i forgot to put the carafe back in the machine. it can only handle that until the water overflows up top. coffee was everywhere and i was not early for work.

also i got wf winter blend or something and it's good

i got pleasant morning buzz again and for the first time i feel a little bored by it. maybe it's too dark. unfortunately while i was thinking about it i swallowed wrong and choked and i could feel a little coffee was in my nose. it was extremely unpleasant!

kim tim jim investor (harbl), Sunday, 12 February 2012 16:34 (twelve years ago) link

I put almond milk in my coffee today for the first time. I like it much better than soy milk but that's about it? It takes 3x as much to make coffee "milky", plus there's no mouth-feel.

I went to a 'hip' coffee shop near me that had a terrarium and played t-rex and the shins. I got an espresso and while the barista was making it I leaned and looked at how it was coming out. the barista asked me what I was looking at and I told him I was looking at the color. he kind of smiled and I asked what kind of beans they used. the owner showed me and told me that the beans were 'near the end of their shelf life' as if apologetically.

later the barista brought me another espresso on the house. I think he and the owner were afraid I would write a bad review on yelp. well I had two espressos and got really buzzed! the espressos were okay, not bad but not great.

i hate the bags that whole foods coffees come in. they do not open easily/well and i always end up spilling beans everywhere! grrrr.

tehresa, Monday, 27 February 2012 00:11 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i'm not sure what you're supposed to do with them. they have those wire closure things like paper bags do but you have to cut below them to open the first time so it's useless. i just dump the whole thing in a plastic food container.

kim tim jim investor (harbl), Monday, 27 February 2012 00:16 (twelve years ago) link

i don't get whole foods coffee, but i dump my peet's beans in a plastic canister intended for holding flour or sugar.

i keep my beans in a bamboo canister with a vacuum seal lid

now i understand how this keeps them cool and dry and out of light, but the airtight part sort of makes no sense - I mean, there is plenty of oxygen in there, they're going to oxidize anyway, so what diff does it make if they oxidize under fresh or stale air??
