lexy i think the tiers on that dress are probably very flattering?? because they look short and very straight, rather that poufing out

just1n3, Thursday, 22 September 2011 15:00 (twelve years ago) link

ooh i really like that! and a pop-up just told me that nordstroms ships to canada now (without stupid brokerage fees on delivery!)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 22 September 2011 15:38 (twelve years ago) link

my poor bank account!

thanks justine, I do hope the tiers are okay. I have another dress that actually looks pretty decent on me in the same style.. here's hoping!

Oh dear, the suzi chin comes in petite sizing.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 22 September 2011 15:46 (twelve years ago) link

Speaking of knowing what works for you, I've had to completely give up on any dress from any company that doesn't come in petites. Which is not a lot of selection compared to the normal market, but it's my only option. Which makes good petite finds extra tempting.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 22 September 2011 15:47 (twelve years ago) link

How tall are you, Laurel? I had you around 5'9"-10" in my head but I suspect I must be wrong!
I guess you and La Lech have tall personalities!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 22 September 2011 15:50 (twelve years ago) link

Hahaha oh so wrong. I'm 5'3" and stocky, so I can't buy smaller sizes--I have to have a 10 or 12--but in the shortest possible length.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 22 September 2011 15:53 (twelve years ago) link

When LL and I got together that one time she visited here, it was like Little and Littler.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 22 September 2011 15:57 (twelve years ago) link

Teehee!

That's tough then! We should do a fabric swap - buy same dress, you give me the extra fabric!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 22 September 2011 15:59 (twelve years ago) link

xp Only if you want the part between the back of the neck and the bottom of the rib cage. :-/ That's where dresses are too long for me.

I am thinking of coming back in the spring btw, just thinking about it

Not to live all over this thread more than I already have, but that news is relevant to my quality of life.

Yeah that suzi chin dress is like the perfect sort of ” neutral” dress

maybe? i worry that prints are nagl for me?

sarahel, Thursday, 22 September 2011 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

almost all of my dresses are black, and i'm thinking i should have more variety.

otoh, this is a definite want:

sarahel, Thursday, 22 September 2011 17:34 (twelve years ago) link

I wondered about the blue print one because I think it would be really flattering but I'm worried about the print/fabric. I sort of hate buying stuff online because the last few times I did the items were totally different than I'd expected.

will eat pudding (ENBB), Thursday, 22 September 2011 17:39 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, i've only bought t-shirts and shoes online.

sarahel, Thursday, 22 September 2011 17:49 (twelve years ago) link

The style of that blue one is nice and a good sturdy classic but I would avoid that print - it's too... Something.

just1n3, Thursday, 22 September 2011 18:43 (twelve years ago) link

Agreed. It's too...something. I can't honestly say what it is or isn't!, but I don't like it.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 22 September 2011 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

It's too close to looking like something from Sears.

will eat pudding (ENBB), Thursday, 22 September 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

I love the shape otherwise. I wish it were red with black piping or some other solid color.

will eat pudding (ENBB), Thursday, 22 September 2011 19:08 (twelve years ago) link

Not that there's anything wrong with sears but, you know.

will eat pudding (ENBB), Thursday, 22 September 2011 19:08 (twelve years ago) link

i'm always afraid that anything with a print would be too dental-hygienist-y.

if it looked like sears circa 1950s, i'd be cool w/it.

sarahel, Thursday, 22 September 2011 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

The softer side of. (/cornelia)

The overlapping boxes want to be one of those '60s geometric prints but they've "jazzed" it up by setting them on a slight upward diagonal, which makes the impact a little...frenetic. Just seems like poor textile design/choice.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 22 September 2011 19:12 (twelve years ago) link

yeah :/ the fabric would make nice sheets/pillow cases though

sarahel, Thursday, 22 September 2011 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

banana has a black dress on sale like the one justine linked at nordstrom but i ended up opting out bc i don't like how i look in cap sleeves and i always say i'll find a sweater/cardi that looks good with a dress and i never do and then i don't wear it enough. sigh.

tehresa, Thursday, 22 September 2011 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

So I didn't get a dress. I went to Lord and Taylor and tried on about 10 but none were right. Then I got tired and gave up. Serves me right for leaving it to the last minute. So I'm wearing an old standby but got a new necklace and shawl and am going out for shoes this morning. I sort of suck at shopping for clothes. Accessories and make-up and stuff I'm a pro at but I get really anxious about clothes and HATE trying things on. At least I know this one looks good and that I'll be comfortable. Oh well.

will eat pudding (ENBB), Saturday, 24 September 2011 12:28 (twelve years ago) link

i am awful at accessories!

but i think you actually made a great choice here - i resent having to spend money a new outfit for every damn thing (see: my opera ball dress i will never wear again and decided i don't even like all that much).

tehresa, Saturday, 24 September 2011 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

Hey T we should hit up Secondi in Dupont. Bring yer unwanted dresses. I have one involving netting.

you can ignore the colours, that's another thing i need to figure out.

just1n3, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

I think the camel dress with the black piping and sash is BY FAR the classiest. Don't like any of the other color combos.

Are the first set & the piped beige dress the same? I like the beige dress (in blue perhaps? I just love blue) but if it were for me, it would need to not have piping.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 19:47 (twelve years ago) link

they are all slight alterations on the chameleon convertible dress (like my wedding dress). the one laurel likes comes with a crinoline skirt.

just1n3, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 19:49 (twelve years ago) link

oh and it's not piping, exactly - it's a reversible dress.

just1n3, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 19:51 (twelve years ago) link

I thought it reminded me of your wedding dress - hah! Awesome! I like the crinoline too. Reversible sounds like even more fun!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 19:53 (twelve years ago) link

I dislike the one with three shades of tan because the edges look overcast instead of turned under and hemmed, and that lettuce ruffly edging reads as really cheap to me. That may be unfair but that's how it is.

All the other ones, I think just pale in comparison to the dark camel. It will accessorize AMAZINGLY! All rich colors go with that! Especially RED.

laurel OTM about the camel dress being best by far, and about edges.

the first 2 beige ones, i don't like teh bodices at all. they just end up looking really not-nice if you're busty. i used to have a dress with the top like that (same sort of edges too) and i always felt sorta ick about it. wore it all the time bcuz it was comfy but not because i loved it. best to get clothing you'll love, if you can!

JuliaA, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 20:11 (twelve years ago) link

Laurel - she doesn't have to stick with the colours though, if that influences your decision.

I don't like layered dresses either though.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 20:12 (twelve years ago) link

i do not like the layered one either!

tehresa, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 02:12 (twelve years ago) link

guys i need a dress for a friend's wedding in early december. there's not a lot of terrific irl shopping where i am so i think i am limited to online. my go-to is usually Nordstrom, and in fact i just bought a dress online from there, but it doesn't really work and i'll be sending it back. any other online shops i should check out? i feel like i always struggle lately when i'm dress shopping--everything looks too juniors or else too matronly (that could be about my own issues, to be fair.)

horseshoe, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:29 (twelve years ago) link

this is the one i'm sending back to nordstrom.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:31 (twelve years ago) link

not overly special but banana and ann taylor do a lot of dresses that would be wedding-appropriate. and i have officially lived in the suburbs too long!

tehresa, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:40 (twelve years ago) link

modcloth.com and asos.com are kind of younger and funkier but can be kind of hit and miss. Depends on your style, I guess. Asos has free shipping and returns in the US so no cost to try anything, and they have TONS of stuff - it's kind of hard to filter through it all.
I've only ordered one dress from Modcloth before and it was horrible, but they have some very cute retro kind of dresses. Be wary of how short they can be!
I also like Karen Millen dresses but would want to try on in-store.

kinder, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:45 (twelve years ago) link

i tend to assume nothing on modcloth is going to be big enough for me, but asos has some really cute stuff! thanks for reminding me they exist.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:47 (twelve years ago) link

what about that shakti site? something cute but simple that you would get a lot of wear out of and could glam up with shoes/accessories

just1n3, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:49 (twelve years ago) link

e.g. this one already posted
