I wouldn't do it. That dress was made for Lechera. The rest of us would just look silly.

And most of the rest of us aren't 6' tall.

It's too much of a hassle to try & post the link on my ph while pretending to work but: has anyone bought dresses from eshakti?

just1n3, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:32 (twelve years ago) link

Is that the one where you can customize them? I haven't but I'm definitely interested.

Going shopping Friday for the dress for that wedding. Sorta excited. It's been a while since I dressed up.

...I'm 6'1", is that good or bad Laurel? :)
I probably can't even order it in Canada anyway.. by 'want to try' I just meant because it's soooo out of my usual zone that it would be neat to see what I looked like as that Lex.

It's not good or bad imo but it's not woodland-nymph material and that's purely what that dress is. I wouldn't go near it with a plastic decontamination suit on, for myself, but when LL shows it to us, I have a burst of love for the dress because it's so her.

In general I firmly believe in knowing what suits you and not straying away from it. When I do, I'm always sorry, and also embarrassed that I went out in public in something that was obviously trying to tell me it was wrong for me and I refused to listen.

^^^^ THIS - I feel like lately I just don't have a clue how to dress my enormous girth in any way that is flattering

just1n3, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:55 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah I love love love that dress but with my height/frame I stay away from an y thing too frilly or cutesy and favor simple clean lines. My mom once said something about taller/bigger girls going for elegant rather than cutesy and while I don't know if I'm that elegant (lol) I think that sort of stuck with me.

will eat pudding (ENBB), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

xp I can be pretty nymphy beside my much taller husband :) I wasn't sure if Lechera was 6' and you were insinuating I wouldn't be, but I see it must have been the reverse.

I've been dressing like an old lady for a long time and looking to maybe dress my age while I am still under 30.. I don't have long now! For the last 2-3 years I've been working with exactly the same hair, outfits, etc and it's getting a little claustrophobic for me. I was one of the girls who in high school couldn't keep her hair colour the same for more than a month and now no one 'can imagine' me as a blonde, etc. Sigh! But like I said, I know it wouldn't work on me. I still think it was pretty.

Justice shut the jello up about your enormous girth. I saw a picture of u on fb recently and u look great.

Dumb phone - Justine obv

will eat pudding (ENBB), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:12 (twelve years ago) link

Wouldn't work on me either, lovely though it is.

But I like the idea of trying on stuff you'd never, ever think of going for - preferably without committing to buy... I bet I'd make some amazing discoveries, if I ever got around to it, about what actually does suit me as opposed to what I assume does. Also, FFM otm about just discovering 'another you' and having fun with it. But yes, Laurel otm that odds are, you already kind of know what suits you best.

To do more of: belting.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:13 (twelve years ago) link

What would be really scary for me is tucking things in, because I have a big belly. But I know high-waisted skirts might solve that. I just have never, ever worn them and am afraid.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:14 (twelve years ago) link

xp to Jutine: You are being silly! Off top of head, first of all you can't hide a figure, really. You can leverage it to best effect but sometimes that means playing it UP, not down. Believe me, it was a total watershed moment when for NYE one year I decided to wear a tight skirt and belt it with a giant patent belt for that curvy look -- it was literally the first time I had ever purposefully made my shape a "thing". (This was many years pre-Mad Men, and I was...young and insecure and had never been fond of my body.)

I still think you're missing the appeal of yr figure and working against it when you try to camouflage it or w/e!

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:14 (twelve years ago) link

xp re belting!

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:14 (twelve years ago) link

Oh yes, I get that but I cant seem to pull it off?!

Xp erica, my 45” hips would beg to differ. Also that photo was taken at a good angle

just1n3, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:18 (twelve years ago) link

Whatever. You are beautiful.:)

I need some Internet Guide to What Width Belt is Appropriate With What.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 22:36 (twelve years ago) link

I wasn't sure if Lechera was 6'

hahahahahahahahhaha the thought of me being six feet tall is just ott so not gonna happen
today i wore modest heels and i felt like i was towering over the world at 5'5". as a more petite person, i admire dresses like the one mandee posted -- how awesome would it be to wear that dress and look so fucking fierce -- but i guess i have to be satisfied to tread lightly and carry a large sword.

i used a scarf as a belt at the wedding i went to this past weekend and it looked cute.

some lady (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 22:47 (twelve years ago) link

I bought a knit dress at Kohl's on Sunday. It is grey and sleeveless, so I wore it over a 3/4 length purple shirt and it looked so cute.

I went through my closet this weekend, and OMG I have so many dresses.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 23:22 (twelve years ago) link

Aw E, that is very sweet of you!

Sometimes I feel like I have the opposite of body dysmorphia, bc I look in the mirror and think ” I look cute in this dress!” & then I see a photo and I'm all UGH

just1n3, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 23:25 (twelve years ago) link

45" hips are hot imo

mandee i love that dress you should absolutely have it made!

horseshoe, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 23:26 (twelve years ago) link

Would be hotter if the rest of me matched!

just1n3, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 23:30 (twelve years ago) link

Nuh-uh, Justine! That's the advertising-schooled mistake that we all make because we don't feel like we've seen an industry-condoned precedent for our figures! If you're healthy and fit, for YOU, and that's the size your hips are, then wear them with pride. I mean you're a happily married person so obv at least one other person thinks you're totally hot--run with that confidence, imo.

Laurel so super OTM. Find what works and flaunt that shit.

some lady (La Lechera), Thursday, 22 September 2011 00:05 (twelve years ago) link

Also, I just discovered that the crochet overlay to that dress is ~removable~ so I could actually wear it with other stuff.

it was a pretty amazing day when i realized this. clean lines forever. every time i try to stray i regret it.

v intrigued by all this eshakti!

tehresa, Thursday, 22 September 2011 03:11 (twelve years ago) link

also ffm i think you would be adorable w/ blonde hair!

tehresa, Thursday, 22 September 2011 03:11 (twelve years ago) link

That reminds me that I meant to tell you guys that I have a friend who has used eshakti and she LOVES IT.

FFM -- you have the benefit of (1) being under 30 and (2) being the person with the crazy hair, which means that when you have normal hair it's all NOTABLE and whatnot. You have beautiful skin, why not be blonde?

i never wear dresses, sometimes i think i should but then i think why should i.

estela, Thursday, 22 September 2011 04:22 (twelve years ago) link

because they are comfortable and don't grab at yr crotch!

some lady (La Lechera), Thursday, 22 September 2011 04:24 (twelve years ago) link

!! my non-dress clothes don't grab at my crotch and if they did would be dealt with severely.

Fall asleep on couch, miss many posts!

ljubljana - I had the same apprehension about tucking in but if the pants/skirt fit right, it looks good no matter the size! At least.. I think so. I may suffer a bit from what Justine was talking about - having a crazy ego when I put on my clothes, dying of shame when I see pictures. Whatever - I see 'real life' me far more frequently than pictures of me! Confidence and attitude really do influence how you are perceived so others probably see similar to what we see when we feel good!

I also want a belt size guide. Also, any hints for where to buy belts online that fit my size-16 frame! I'm a 14 in dresses and have only got one even remotely 'big' (wide? tall?) belt and I want a bunch of corsety type ones. I know nothing about belts. Today I am wearing a black pencil skirt with a grey and white striped tee and a belt would be perfect, but because of my squishiness I can't get a belt to stay in the right place if I don't have belt loops. Too tight and I lose my curves and look like a sausage, too loose and the belt dances up and down my hips. :(

Woah, all the blonde love! When my hair was originally dyed orange my hairstylist told me NEVER AGAIN about the blonde, because I was so pale. I did adore it though. I feel now like my bright hair is what keeps me interesting? If I were blonde I might just be unremarkable? My self esteem issues, let me show them to you! I do love the Blonde though and I think that'll be my 'rest of my life' look - don't like me with brown hair really, which is natural - but my hair is SO RED right now even bleach wouldn't get rid of it so I would probably have to do it gradually or cut my hair quite a bit, which I'm not ready for. I'll take it down to orange, maybe be blonde for spring? Thank you for all the sweet comments!

I just bought this one - not crazy about the tiers but it kept catching my eye at $80 and is down to $40 "today only" and there was still one in my size, so..
http://www.rickis.com/renderImage.image?imageName=Rickis/general_apparel/5124prl3046m_211183_01.jpg&width=334&height=359

It's a little out of my 'black and grey' winter style, at least. In summer I can wear all sorts of colourful dresses (this is my fave - https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/263047_10150247374463578_516053577_7486524_5977003_n.jpg) but as son as it gets cold I get all black skirt, black cardi, grey tank top/sweater and I can't getout. I bought a white one the other day - I've never worn white ever because I thought it made me look fat - baby steps, Lex!

I also love that blue dress and cannot believe the site ships to Canada! Thank you so much!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 22 September 2011 13:23 (twelve years ago) link

Hate to sound like an old person, but when I was pre-30 I also had bright red hair and felt the same way. At some point I realized that having natural hair while I could was a good idea, and I can go back to having crazy hair when I reach the crone zone. If anyone wants to know how interesting I am, they can strike up a conversation, right?

some lady (La Lechera), Thursday, 22 September 2011 13:35 (twelve years ago) link

hahaha, that's fair. I only revived the bright colours after 2-3 years of steady blonde, one last rebellion so to speak ;) As a 16 in a sea of 2s working in the 'luxury' industry I'm going to hang onto that hair for a little while longer, har har.
And now I want this :(

Damn you eShakti!!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 22 September 2011 13:41 (twelve years ago) link

estela, you must be a pants person. I know some of those. They go into a store and put on a pair of pants, and they fit. It's a miracoil!

That doesn't happen to me, therefore dresses.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 22 September 2011 13:58 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, pants don't really fit me either. It's annoying! I would love to wear some nice pants, but really all I can wear are jeans. I remember being forced to wear khakis at various jobs and it was just an ABOMINATION.

That was when all pants were wide and huge too, and there was no internet, so I just kinda had to grin and bear it in my clown pants.

thank you, darlings! i think i've become a little more sensitized to my size after going shopping with my friend last week: i picked out a bunch of these totally awesome dresses that i LOVED but were all too small so i made my friend try them on and she looked so.freaking.good.

i really want this, too:

lexy i think the tiers on that dress are probably very flattering?? because they look short and very straight, rather that poufing out

ooh i really like that! and a pop-up just told me that nordstroms ships to canada now (without stupid brokerage fees on delivery!)
