it's a cheaper way to play in a way. but not everyone are up for money every hand games. Also, they're effectively taking a 17% (if it's $5+1) rake rather than 3% that they do in money per hand games.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:21 (nineteen years ago) link

huh? I thought you paid your $6 and that was IT until the tournament was over?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Unless they take $1 per hand... but then who do they take it from? I'm confused again. Can someone explain it all in a paragraph

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:28 (nineteen years ago) link

So, this evening? I might give it a go anyway but it's much more fun playing with you guys*

*this includes you, Julia, Ste, Daver, Caitlin, Barry, Jams, okay?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 17:54 (nineteen years ago) link

well if you pay $6, and they take $1 for the prize money, that's taking 16% right?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Ken, I understand that. But in the regular games, they take the rake EVERY HAND whereas, presumably, they only take it once in these tournaments?

Maybe I'll just have a look at the site and see if it explains everything.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Anyway, anyone up for play or real action tonight?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Fuck, what a dire night. Decided to use real money. First off, 399th out of 593 - not too disgraceful, I guess. Then three single-table tourneys - 10th, 9th and 8th. I suck.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 00:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Dom took a first place on a two table $5 buy in tournament today! Some nice playing by me, some retarded playing by various Scandinavians, I was down to 600 chips with eight players on the table at one point, and then the tide turned. The final all-in saw my AA against his AQ. There's nothing better than seeing those cards come up.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 00:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I've been hosed in all the multi-table tourneys - I go all-in w/ pocket 7s, the other guy has pocket 9s. Or I get sucked out. Or I make a dumb move. I am trying my luck @ the single-table things now. I phear I am now an addict. Pray for me.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 00:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, 300 player tournaments probably aren't the way to make a living off this thing. Stick to 20/10 player games, make a few notes on the players, you'll notice some of the same names pop up.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 00:28 (nineteen years ago) link

i love the ones who come on trash talking and then get pwn3d.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 00:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh god, the Yanks on pokerroom.com are dreadful with the trash talk.

My top trick is a well-timed "Call him you pussy" when a mid-tabled player has just been offered an all-in against a top-tabled player. He won't call him, he hates you, and he'll call anything you put against him for the next half hour to reassert his masculinity. Beautiful.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 00:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Hahah! I wonder what those sort of people would be like playing poker in real life, if they're that easy to manipulate on-line.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 08:31 (nineteen years ago) link

only got 2nd place last night.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 12:32 (nineteen years ago) link

In the same game in which I came 10th, ken :(

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 12:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Though I am still pwning at pretend money play. Just shows the difference between amateurs who like a laugh and people who actually want to win money.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 14:12 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm been WAY into online poking this week - Saturday, I won $30 and a $50 ticket to a tournamet (good for either a big-money $10,000 pool game OR a chance to win a ticket to the NEXT level big money game), but the last two days I have been pwned to the tune of $50 (via suck-outs & brain farts - have I mentioned that pocket queens don't mean dookie when an Ace is flopped?), and I think I'll need to ease off the gas & work the bet-limit HE games until I'm comfortable. (Moral victory - I almost finished in the top 100 last night in a tourney. Goo goo steps, y'all.)

A tip for you guys looking to break me - for whatever reason, whenever I'm in a "big money" tourney, I get tight-fisted & gun-shy. It's like I'm always playing behind, & feel like I never have enough chips to, for instance, call a pre-flop raise when I've got an Ace w/ a middling kicker. I'm hoping that practice (and/or binge drinking) will grow me some chest hair. Another tip - if you take your sweet ass time in calling a $30 bet when you have over $1,500 in chips EVERY SINGLE TIME IT'S YOUR TURN, you'll really piss me off to the point that I'll be tempted to whack you upside your virtual head. And you'll probably pwn me, too.

Yeah, obviously the psych game isn't the same online as in real life - for one, you can turn off the table chat, which is nice if you're easily swayed - but shenanigans like the long pause between bets (and the stupid HURRY UP bar that pops up) make up for that. Also, the big-ass pre-flop re-raise is just as annoying / antagonizing in the virtual world as it is in the real world.

i dunno whether i can ever play a real life game now that i'm so used to laughing OUT LOUD whenever i know i have someone suckered when i have the top hand!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 16:23 (nineteen years ago) link

David, I'll be in fo sho. I'm still totally in need of practice, though - I've got so far to go before I learn what to do at whatever point in a game. And must remember to do it sober (yeah, right)...

Tonight, again, I appear to have nothing on, and Sgs has already told me she's got thesis stuff to keep her occupied. Watch this space?

Hah, yeah, I don't think I could get away with singing Notorious BIG lyrics ever time I get the nuts either.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 16:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, yeah - I do my own wrong-headed color-commentary now (complete w/ total misues of poker slang). I'm afraid my roommate's going to have me committed if I continue on like this.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 17:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Definitely going to be around later (9, 10, 11 GMT). David, I am Markelby on pokerroom.com - might you be around? Anyone else?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I might be, though probably not until later (more like 12 or 1 GMT, or 7 / 8 PM EST). Look for POPSHIZZ.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, will do (but if you can get there earlier, so much the better :)).

I fancy another tounrey tonight - ken, fancy joining me at a single-table one?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Is there a "friends list" type of thing on this PokerRoom contraption?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Not that I know of, but Chris knows it best I think.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

anyone playing?

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 22:01 (nineteen years ago) link

ME AND JULIA ARE IN A PLAY TOURNEY - SHE IS TOTALLY PWNING DUDE

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 22:17 (nineteen years ago) link

BUT I TOTALLY PWNED THE NEXT TOURNEY - FIRSTXOR!!!

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 22:41 (nineteen years ago) link

what's this about single table? i'm just making dinner now, join you afters if you're still awake

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

in pokerroom, there's an icon at the bottom of the screen that's like a magnifying glass.. click on it and you can search for a player's name and it'd tell you what table they're on etc.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Oooh, neat. Though we should still use this thread (and AIM?) to keep in touch. I did another play tourney afterwards last night and won again, though it was less fun as the dude I ended up playing against wasn't taking it seriously and going all in/raising to like $6000 each time. And he called me a fagget (sic). Sarah pointed out I should have responded with "moran", but I wasn't sharp enough to think of it. Damn.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 11:05 (nineteen years ago) link

OK then, I think we should have one tonight. Opinions?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 11:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I won't be able to play until 2300 GMT but I'd be keen.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:18 (nineteen years ago) link

if i'm home, then i'm not in rome.

and thus will play.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:33 (nineteen years ago) link

going bowling with flatmate tonite but should be back b4 11

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 14:34 (nineteen years ago) link

played in a single table $10 tourney today, came in first. won $50

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 22:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Nice one Chris. You around?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah well. Another constructive night's play. Came 4th in my first pretend tourney, then won my second after a titanic battle (with blinds up to $1,500) with a cool bloke who played honestly and cautiously and complimented my game. Made a nice difference compared to last night.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 3 March 2005 00:46 (nineteen years ago) link

i've found that when i play tourneys i will have Kenny Rogers "The Gambler" going in the background.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Thursday, 3 March 2005 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

it's really useful!! Sometimes I forget and I would start counting my money, while still sitting at the table.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:14 (nineteen years ago) link

what's really useful, Ken? "The Gambler"?

Next time I play (prob tonight) I am going to have Tep's 1991 mix playing in the background.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:27 (nineteen years ago) link

i just end up with 'the gambler' in my head when i'm playing a lot of poker, regardless. and i think of when kenny rogers was on the muppets, riding on that train and playing poker with rolf if i remember right.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:30 (nineteen years ago) link

"The Gambler" is legitimately one of my twenty favourite singles of all time. The pathos of "Somewhere in the darkness, the gambler, he broke even" is too much to bare sometimes.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:02 (nineteen years ago) link

i like the Tetris connotations of "If you want to play the Game, boy, you gotta learn to play it right"

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 3 March 2005 17:34 (nineteen years ago) link

markelby which room are you in?

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Thursday, 3 March 2005 23:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Hi Chris - sorry, haven't been on this thread. Just watched the most amusing thing - three people away at our play tournament, so they stayed in till nearly the end. Julia happened to be one of them, and she won AT LEAST 6 hands without being there! Julia, you came 2nd :) The best moment, though, was when one of the away guys (away since the very beginning, this is), was forced all-in and was dealt FOUR ACES.

A game of skill, you say? Ha!

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 4 March 2005 00:03 (nineteen years ago) link

four aces? that's insane. sorry about having to leave so abruptly. i was even doing well before i left, which is unusual for me...though maybe i play better when i'm not there!

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 4 March 2005 03:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Yay - my first real-money (one-table) tournament success - 2nd place and $15! I should have won, though - I was about $10,000 up on the last remaining guy, but he played phenomenally and I made like 1 mistake and the tables were turned.
