with you here man. his singing was never better. it's still stunning. and yes his lyrics are incredible. "When the cadaverous mob saves its doors for the dead man, you cannot leave." what a way to end an album.

pleasantly surprised that 'Not Even Jail' won this by a hair. but i love every song on here, it's a perfect record

"Not Even Jail" never really clicked with me, and includes some of the album's worst lyrical clunkers ("Feel the warmth of my sincerity", "You're making people's lives feel less private", "scaaaar tiss-SHUE"), while "Public Pervert" has gradually revealed itself to be one of my favs, so this result is a bit of a head-scratcher for me.

also: I liked "A Time to Be So Small" better when I misheard the line "Rehearsing interaction, he wasn't even there" as "Nursing an erection..."

I should also clarify that my elevation of "Public Pervert" is on purely musical grounds, and was contingent on training myself not to wince at the metaphor of the opening lines.

lol I have always thought "nursing an erection" *was* the line

One last thought before I stop posting and go do some work in my parents' yard: I dunno if it's just the "Not Even Jail"/"What Jail Is Like" association suggesting itself to my brain, but this album has always seemed somehow of a piece with The Afghan Whigs' Gentlemen, at least thematically: substance abuse, gender and relationship power dynamics. The difference is that the Whigs have a theatrical side which I find wholly lacking in Interpol's music. Whether consciously or not, Paul Banks always seems to be writing/singing in 'his own voice' & never inhabits a character the way Greg Dulli does on "Fountain and Fairfax". I find the latter way more engaging and immediate: Let me drink! Let me taaaaallk!! is cathartic in a way no Interpol song has ever managed to be.

Not Even Jail also has one of my favorite bizarre metaphors by PB: "I'm subtle like a lion's cage." it's bordering on English as a second language. Another example: "You let the face slap around the self."

I think a "is paul banks a good lyricist y/n" poll might be fun, have we done that before
