forty five US bucks!

quincie, Friday, 16 September 2011 15:53 (twelve years ago) link

coats man. heavy shit.

caek, Friday, 16 September 2011 16:02 (twelve years ago) link

yay q! hope it works out! i bet the UK 12 is right? i would have the same issue with uk size (10 or 12) and i usually err on the side of sizing up because if the shoulders don't fit, it's no good

also can i just make a comment: people are crazy. missoni for target? i know some of the crazy is just hype and marketing strategery but people! the stuff is still target quality and imo hideous! if you are going to troll ebay to buy missoni at a couple hundred a pop, dang, buy the real thing

max, Friday, 16 September 2011 16:49 (twelve years ago) link

the missoni thing is kinda funny, i had a friend who rapturously facebooked about the missoni lounge pants she scored. i mean. missoni lounge pants. c'mon.

I kind of hate Missoni to begin with so I haven't understood this mania at all.

elmo argonaut, Friday, 16 September 2011 17:27 (twelve years ago) link

max, Friday, 16 September 2011 17:54 (twelve years ago) link

Quincie: UK sizes are US+4 so US 6 = UK 10; US 8 = UK 12, etc
But my feeling is the actual fit depends on the store and usually on their range of sizes (so if the smallest they have is a size 2, that's likely to be similar to a size 4 in another shop where that's the smallest they run to).

With coats it's really hard anyway because I find sizing is often all over the place and depends on how thick it is, the cut, etc. 12 is probably fine!

kinder, Friday, 16 September 2011 18:03 (twelve years ago) link

UK sizes are US+4 so US 6 = UK 10; US 8 = UK 12

It's so weird because some websites state what you said and others say it's +2 which is what I said yesterday. So inconsistent. US 6 = 8, US 8 = 10 and so on. I've definitely found that +2 to be closer most often. Nearly everything would be way too big if I went by the +4 thing.

your mom the burrito (ENBB), Friday, 16 September 2011 18:08 (twelve years ago) link

For instance these two both do the +2

http://www.onlineconversion.com/clothing_womens.htm

http://www.asknumbers.com/ClothingWomensConversion.aspx

Whereas this one does the +4

http://www.fashion-411.com/Size_Conversions.htm

I guess though is we can't have standardized sizing across the industry within the country it would be ridic to expect international conversions to be consistent.

your mom the burrito (ENBB), Friday, 16 September 2011 18:12 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah I checked here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clothing_size#Women
and 'dresses and suits' and 'women's clothes' are different! It's so dumb. Same as Quincie, I have managed to narrow my 'size' down to about 3 :-)

Hm, maybe that is why I've been finding clothes here generally too big, although I usually just look for the smallest size and that's often too big (and I'm not exactly a skinny waif) - I guess a lot of stuff is designed to be drapy or loose right now.

kinder, Friday, 16 September 2011 18:17 (twelve years ago) link

Thinking about it I probably learned the +4 thing solely from H&M labels...

kinder, Friday, 16 September 2011 18:19 (twelve years ago) link

how convenient that so many clothes are drapy and loose -- this means they don't have to actually "fit" and more people will buy them.
dislike.

some lady (La Lechera), Friday, 16 September 2011 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

Hm, maybe that is why I've been finding clothes here generally too big

No wait that doesn't work because I'm sizing back from US to UK sizes... ¯\(°_o)/¯

kinder, Friday, 16 September 2011 18:22 (twelve years ago) link

isn't this, like, one of the perks of dating same sex? sharing clothes?

yeah, sure, its more as elmo sd theres a weird territory btw 'want to smash' and 'want to dress/look like' thats sorta a queasy masturbatory thing going on a bit idk sorta outside the purview of this thread

Lamp, Friday, 16 September 2011 18:25 (twelve years ago) link

ya, i get that. i always think it's weird when you see twinsies walking down the street

jaxon, Friday, 16 September 2011 18:52 (twelve years ago) link

this has been a thing for a while, hasn't it? or was it more in the hip hop scene and moving it's way into the normal style scene? i got this one back in 08

jaxon, Friday, 16 September 2011 18:55 (twelve years ago) link

i <3 norse projects. i wanted a jacket for a while, but never found it in my size. there's one really small store in sf that sells it, but they're so tiny that they only carry a few pieces from each brand. http://www.maasandstacks.com

jaxon, Friday, 16 September 2011 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

i've been seeing them for at least a year, idk about the hiphop influence tbh but i kinda see them coming out of the ivy / prep trend of the past few years

elmo argonaut, Friday, 16 September 2011 19:00 (twelve years ago) link

i bought a vintage varsity jacket in 09 when it was a big runway trend iirc

Lamp, Friday, 16 September 2011 19:02 (twelve years ago) link

max is this the sort of sweater you were talking about?

what i like to do is fantasize about like edward green mto shoes and then everything seems so reasonable in comparison that its like you cant afford NOT to buy them

but yeah chocolate/dark brown suede derbys or def on my list

Lamp, Friday, 16 September 2011 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

jeez i always get confused by the whole derby / blucher / oxford thing wrt shoes

elmo argonaut, Friday, 16 September 2011 19:26 (twelve years ago) link

shackets seem like perfect for SF weather. the patrik ervell 'fall shirt' i posted above is basically a 'shacket'; i wear it over buttondowns

max, Friday, 16 September 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

ive seen the varsity jackets around for a while, i just have never really been into them for how i dress, but i really liked that PE one so my eyes are open to them now

max, Friday, 16 September 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

heh i think jimmy wanted to take me to maas and stacks when i was in SF acouple weeks ago

max, Friday, 16 September 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

elmo argonaut, Friday, 16 September 2011 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

max, Friday, 16 September 2011 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

where would one look for fair isle sweaters that aren't incredibly expensive (and please don't say "google")

corey, Friday, 16 September 2011 20:15 (twelve years ago) link

hit up a thrift store, maybe? i really depends on yr budget and what you're looking for.

elmo argonaut, Friday, 16 September 2011 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

vintage (lol xp)

Lamp, Friday, 16 September 2011 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

rag & bone trousers are nice, i got a pair of chinos there on major major sale (like they cost less than gap sale) and love them. i dunno about some of their other women's stuff though, it's not quite right to me. overdesigned or something

j crew kills me because they do very nice work with styling and yet the quality of their women's clothes is just trash lately. sure i want those cropped trousers in red or fuchsia but the fabric is so cheap they don't even look right on the size 0 model who has to stand in an awkward pose so you don't notice as much

would totally buy those crewneck sweaters if they made a women's version though. nice

daria-g, Friday, 16 September 2011 20:23 (twelve years ago) link

land's end canvas has some fair isle for ~$70 in a cotton/wool/nylon blend

http://canvas.landsend.com/pp/FairisleCrewneckSweater~215971_-1.html

elmo argonaut, Friday, 16 September 2011 20:24 (twelve years ago) link

fair isle: ebay or etsy? like if you search several terms and variations on the spelling of it & search for just things like sweater + wool + scotland. if i were in new england i'd go to church thrift shops and look..

for that kind of thing i'd probably try to get vintage if possible because you can actually find a decent quality piece, whereas if you buy new it'd have to cost a couple hundred before you get out of the range of cheap/throwaway clothes

daria-g, Friday, 16 September 2011 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

the only thing is i've noticed about looking for fair isle / nordic / figural sweaters on eBay is that it's totally corrupted by this phenomenon of "ugly christmas sweater parties"
