I have a wedding to go to the weekend after next and I need a dress. I'd like it to be between $50-$100 but I know that's a tall order. :( This is stressful. I am thinking LBD because I'd like it to be something I wear often maybe even to work but just with different accessories. HALP. I will search later and maybe post some possible candidates once I get out of this THREE HOUR MEETING. :(

EN, if you need it by the weekend after next, just go SHOPPING? Surely somewhere there will be an LBD that could work.

By the time something comes in the mail, if it doesn't fit, there won't be much time to return it for another size or get something else?

Yeah, you're totally right. I just really hate trying on clothes in stores and am easily overwhlemed so I want to look around online and maybe have a couple things in mind when I go shopping which will most likely wind up being the night before or morning of the wedding since I can never seem to do anything before the absolute last minute.

Nordstrom's search results for "little black dress" between $50 and 100.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:34 (twelve years ago) link

I have this CK LBD and it's like wearing wonderful pajamas, but I always wear a foundation layer underneath (spanx or stockings cut into shorts) and I have to stand up straight. I usually belt it because it's too tall for me but it'd prob be perfect for you!

There's a little bit of ruching on one hip that makes the front not lie COMPLETELY smoothly so it appears to drape slightly. Win/win imo.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:37 (twelve years ago) link

I got it at TJ Maxx in Aug, btw, and it was NOT no one hundred dollars.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:38 (twelve years ago) link

Xp Stockings cut into shorts! I thought I was the only one. Great, ghetto spanx. I actually ordered spans this week, excited to finally have the real deal!

Being stuck in Canadia I cannot help with the dress hunt E but I know you will look fab!!

being stuck in Canada has i am quite sure saved me thousands and thousands of dollars in online shopping mistakes

(though when i got to NYC or SF, i spend a lot of time shopping to make up for it)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:24 (twelve years ago) link

mandee - yes, you should!

sarahel, Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:33 (twelve years ago) link

agreed--mandee, get it!

some of the nordstrom search results look potentially promising--i hate the internet-visibility issues with black dresses tho. it's so hard to see seaming and styling details.

<3 <3 <3 <3 Hello fairy sprite, where DID you get that delectable scrap of lace?

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 19:36 (twelve years ago) link

ruche successfully targeted me through facebook :-/

i want to wear that with a severe black belt, tights, and my black justin lacers

i'm hopeless. it's $80! i can't even wear it to a wedding because it's white-ish and lacey.

some lady (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 19:38 (twelve years ago) link

I would also like you wear it with black tights and the meanest, tallest boots you own. Then I will cast you in my film production of A War for the Oaks.

honestly i cannot wait for the weather to cool off just a little more because i have so many dresses and blouses and boots to wear

Yes, so happy for boots, and... er, cardigans.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 19:58 (twelve years ago) link

oh god that dress is AMAZING. I don't think it would work on me, but I want to try!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:23 (twelve years ago) link

I wouldn't do it. That dress was made for Lechera. The rest of us would just look silly.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:28 (twelve years ago) link

And most of the rest of us aren't 6' tall.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:28 (twelve years ago) link

It's too much of a hassle to try & post the link on my ph while pretending to work but: has anyone bought dresses from eshakti?

just1n3, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:32 (twelve years ago) link

Is that the one where you can customize them? I haven't but I'm definitely interested.

Going shopping Friday for the dress for that wedding. Sorta excited. It's been a while since I dressed up.

will eat pudding (ENBB), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:33 (twelve years ago) link

...I'm 6'1", is that good or bad Laurel? :)
I probably can't even order it in Canada anyway.. by 'want to try' I just meant because it's soooo out of my usual zone that it would be neat to see what I looked like as that Lex.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:50 (twelve years ago) link

It's not good or bad imo but it's not woodland-nymph material and that's purely what that dress is. I wouldn't go near it with a plastic decontamination suit on, for myself, but when LL shows it to us, I have a burst of love for the dress because it's so her.

In general I firmly believe in knowing what suits you and not straying away from it. When I do, I'm always sorry, and also embarrassed that I went out in public in something that was obviously trying to tell me it was wrong for me and I refused to listen.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:52 (twelve years ago) link

^^^^ THIS - I feel like lately I just don't have a clue how to dress my enormous girth in any way that is flattering

just1n3, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:55 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah I love love love that dress but with my height/frame I stay away from an y thing too frilly or cutesy and favor simple clean lines. My mom once said something about taller/bigger girls going for elegant rather than cutesy and while I don't know if I'm that elegant (lol) I think that sort of stuck with me.

will eat pudding (ENBB), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

xp I can be pretty nymphy beside my much taller husband :) I wasn't sure if Lechera was 6' and you were insinuating I wouldn't be, but I see it must have been the reverse.

I've been dressing like an old lady for a long time and looking to maybe dress my age while I am still under 30.. I don't have long now! For the last 2-3 years I've been working with exactly the same hair, outfits, etc and it's getting a little claustrophobic for me. I was one of the girls who in high school couldn't keep her hair colour the same for more than a month and now no one 'can imagine' me as a blonde, etc. Sigh! But like I said, I know it wouldn't work on me. I still think it was pretty.

Justice shut the jello up about your enormous girth. I saw a picture of u on fb recently and u look great.

Dumb phone - Justine obv

will eat pudding (ENBB), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:12 (twelve years ago) link

Wouldn't work on me either, lovely though it is.

But I like the idea of trying on stuff you'd never, ever think of going for - preferably without committing to buy... I bet I'd make some amazing discoveries, if I ever got around to it, about what actually does suit me as opposed to what I assume does. Also, FFM otm about just discovering 'another you' and having fun with it. But yes, Laurel otm that odds are, you already kind of know what suits you best.

To do more of: belting.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:13 (twelve years ago) link

What would be really scary for me is tucking things in, because I have a big belly. But I know high-waisted skirts might solve that. I just have never, ever worn them and am afraid.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:14 (twelve years ago) link

xp to Jutine: You are being silly! Off top of head, first of all you can't hide a figure, really. You can leverage it to best effect but sometimes that means playing it UP, not down. Believe me, it was a total watershed moment when for NYE one year I decided to wear a tight skirt and belt it with a giant patent belt for that curvy look -- it was literally the first time I had ever purposefully made my shape a "thing". (This was many years pre-Mad Men, and I was...young and insecure and had never been fond of my body.)

I still think you're missing the appeal of yr figure and working against it when you try to camouflage it or w/e!

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:14 (twelve years ago) link

xp re belting!

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:14 (twelve years ago) link

Oh yes, I get that but I cant seem to pull it off?!

Xp erica, my 45” hips would beg to differ. Also that photo was taken at a good angle

just1n3, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:18 (twelve years ago) link

Whatever. You are beautiful.:)

will eat pudding (ENBB), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 21:22 (twelve years ago) link

I need some Internet Guide to What Width Belt is Appropriate With What.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 22:36 (twelve years ago) link

I wasn't sure if Lechera was 6'

hahahahahahahahhaha the thought of me being six feet tall is just ott so not gonna happen
today i wore modest heels and i felt like i was towering over the world at 5'5". as a more petite person, i admire dresses like the one mandee posted -- how awesome would it be to wear that dress and look so fucking fierce -- but i guess i have to be satisfied to tread lightly and carry a large sword.

i used a scarf as a belt at the wedding i went to this past weekend and it looked cute.

some lady (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 22:47 (twelve years ago) link

I bought a knit dress at Kohl's on Sunday. It is grey and sleeveless, so I wore it over a 3/4 length purple shirt and it looked so cute.

I went through my closet this weekend, and OMG I have so many dresses.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 23:22 (twelve years ago) link

Aw E, that is very sweet of you!

Sometimes I feel like I have the opposite of body dysmorphia, bc I look in the mirror and think ” I look cute in this dress!” & then I see a photo and I'm all UGH

just1n3, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 23:25 (twelve years ago) link

45" hips are hot imo

mandee i love that dress you should absolutely have it made!

horseshoe, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 23:26 (twelve years ago) link

Would be hotter if the rest of me matched!

just1n3, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 23:30 (twelve years ago) link

Nuh-uh, Justine! That's the advertising-schooled mistake that we all make because we don't feel like we've seen an industry-condoned precedent for our figures! If you're healthy and fit, for YOU, and that's the size your hips are, then wear them with pride. I mean you're a happily married person so obv at least one other person thinks you're totally hot--run with that confidence, imo.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 22 September 2011 00:01 (twelve years ago) link

Laurel so super OTM. Find what works and flaunt that shit.

some lady (La Lechera), Thursday, 22 September 2011 00:05 (twelve years ago) link

Also, I just discovered that the crochet overlay to that dress is ~removable~ so I could actually wear it with other stuff.

some lady (La Lechera), Thursday, 22 September 2011 00:06 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah I love love love that dress but with my height/frame I stay away from an y thing too frilly or cutesy and favor simple clean lines. it was a pretty amazing day when i realized this. clean lines forever. every time i try to stray i regret it.

v intrigued by all this eshakti!

tehresa, Thursday, 22 September 2011 03:11 (twelve years ago) link

also ffm i think you would be adorable w/ blonde hair!

tehresa, Thursday, 22 September 2011 03:11 (twelve years ago) link

That reminds me that I meant to tell you guys that I have a friend who has used eshakti and she LOVES IT.

FFM -- you have the benefit of (1) being under 30 and (2) being the person with the crazy hair, which means that when you have normal hair it's all NOTABLE and whatnot. You have beautiful skin, why not be blonde?

some lady (La Lechera), Thursday, 22 September 2011 03:39 (twelve years ago) link

i like this from eshakti:
