The calculatedness of SUCH ridiculously small pressings/editions of things with these guys bothers me. I understand that it's a reaction to our diseased modern era of having everything at our fingertips, etc etc, but it would be nice not to have to go to such insane lengths to get one's hands on it. At my most cynical, I feel like it's a cheap and calculated way to imbue this stuff with an aura of ultra-specialness that the music on its own probably doesn't merit.

TBF it could be they can't afford to print larger pressings

it is ominous that one reads that interview, gets a good laugh at the responses, and once the word 'Raimie' appears in coolhunting ilxor thread the instinctive reaction is to shout FIRST!

Clarke, are you familiar with the noise....uh...'community'? Fernow (aka Prurient aka Vatican Shadow) was borne out of that scene, and that scene has always been about limited releases, whether it be for mystique-building or economic reasons. Sorry to point out the obvious, but I don't know, the limited-release phenomenon has never really bothered me, except during my heavy heavy NNCK obsession days where I'd sit with five eBay windows open hoping to win my bid on a 75-edition CDR or whatever.

(In other words, there are always means of hearing the music. Kneel Before Religious Icons is easily downloadable, for example.

I'm not worried about finding the music, and I realize it's pretty much going to be at least downloadable these days, but I'm shamefully a bit of a vinyl fetishist myself, so that's my preferred medium when possible. Ha, maybe it's because I know I'm so susceptible to being the five eBay window guy myself that I just have to vent sometimes... I mean, just this afternoon I picked up the "highly limited second vinyl pressing" of the Rrose + Bob Ostertag 2xLP on Sandwell District for far too much money at Other Music. (Speaking of which, if you're a fan of the stuff on this thread, I would urge you to check out Rrose, and this record in particular... Perhaps not as overtly darkly gothic as some of this stuff, but it's unabashedly black/slate grey in its tonal palette, cavernously deep, and with almost unbelievably tactile synth grit--like tiny pieces of black hail skittering off of an oil slick.

i met Bob at this gay bar a few months ago, and he said this was coming out, and i was like, "you're a big silver bear daddy and you're not wearing a shirt, you knew david wojnarowicz, and rrose is working with you on this record on Sandwell District? excuse me while i kiss your boots."

also yeah, it's a fabulous record.

Table, that is awesome! The synth sounds on that record are just unbelievable...

Clarke B., Friday, 16 September 2011 13:47 (twelve years ago) link

man, rrose/ostertag lp is a real stunner. parts of it strongly remind me of techno blended with the very 'out' synth intro to herbie hancock's 'rain dance'. or just the more rhythmic end of 60s/70s electronic music in general. something like seesselberg, maybe? last few mins of the youtube above are a good example of what I'm trying to describe. love it!

thanks for the heads-up!

^^ this is so provocative. in that way that i feel provoked when my college-age neighbors forget to take the trash out and my driveway starts to reek of kitty litter and stale beer.

Cassettes with individual color j-cards and cases.
Arranged in a radially symmetric fashion inside a 6" reel-to-reel box with color images affixed to the inside and outside.
Edition of 33 numbered copies.
The order of the cassettes is ambiguous; the listing here assumes a clockwise order within the box.

^^ you can really tell how much thought went into this release

this is quickly sliding from "promising" to easily the worst trend in electronic music in recent memory.

ehhh Prurient dude has been doing this sort of nonsense for a good decade without any interaction from the 'electronic community', I doubt it's going to noticeably bleed into anything else being talked about on here

Ah, I was looking for a thread about Ekoplekz. I love this guy's sound. His instruments hiss and fizz as though they could deliver a nasty shock if improperly handled. Those bass sounds are so fucked up and dirty - in a way this is what I've always secretly wanted dub to sound like. I've always been in love with the idea of Lee Perry or King Tubby surrounded by tape equipment, wrecked'n'repaired electronics, multi-coloured wires spitting out of crust-enfilled sockets in a van or a ramshackle hut somewhere. This kind of takes it to its logical conclusion - creating true dub sounds using the studio itself as an instrument, rather than reconstructing pre-existing recordings.

The Ekoclef collab with Bassclef is very interesting and worthwhile from what I've heard so far.

Couldn't have said it better myself Dog Latin, I can't get enough of his stuff. It really is how I've always wanted dub to sound at times. He just hits all the right buttons for me in that no mans land between synth experiments, dub, bass and I dunno post-punk or something haha...

Received my copy of the Another Walk 12" by Chasing Voices today. Pretty brilliant stuff. One sided LP, and the track itself is on the short side, so some might feel a bit ripped off ($15!), but it's consistent with the package, which has no information on it anywhere, not even on the label or spine. You know, stark. Don't love it as much as Acidbathory, but that's a hard 12" to beat.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 27 September 2011 19:36 (twelve years ago) link

Also, this stuff played loud, through headphones = totally different experience. Jamming Regis' In A Syrian Tongue 12" right now through headphones at top volume. My god, those drums! That bass! Unreal.

I assumed that someone already bumped this thread because of this forhcoming cassette (out next week?) put out by The Tapeworm:

"Old Apparatus are a four-piece audio/visual collective transmitting from East London that have been releasing bass-oriented electronic dance music on Mala's underground label Deep Medi Musik. This edition for The Tapeworm is an improvised instrumental piece using guitar, piano, violin and found sound ambiences recorded entirely in the front room of the house they share together. Given that most forms of electronic music are bound by linearity and grid-based digital audio workstations, Old Apparatus consciously embarked on an exploration of non-linear forms of musical expression. The audio on the tape is a snapshot in time of that exploration.
Track Listing:
A1. 15:24-15:46
B-side left intentionally blank"
