I have a feeling "For My Niggaz and My Bitches" is going to get massively underrated here.

That's one of my favorite songs off of Doggystyle. That looping piano bit over that drumbeat is infectious. not to mention Kurupt kills it on that song. it's probably my favorite track of the second half.

Nate Dogg's verse on Ain't No Fun is just so audacious....I mean it's been made to look tame by things like the Whisper song since but damn is this fun to sing at church conventions

I love The Chronic but this album has a special place in my heart as being the first 'naughty' rap I ever got into in my life. my mom wouldn't even let me buy this in middle school!

The nadir, though, is reached early on side two, with 'Ain't No Fun (If the Homies Can't Have None)'. Presumably the 213 associates - the track reunites Snoop with his former bandmates, Warren and Nate - felt this was a harmless lark, a bit of a laugh, nothing to be taken too seriously. And certainly the preamble to the track suggests that nothing it will contain is going to rise above the level of schoolyard juvenilia of the least appealing kind. But it's not your imagination that hears malevolence in the way the trio, and fellow-traveller Kurrupt, stick rigidly to a script that follows the title's concept. In between simultaneously deriding any women stupid enough to actually agree to have sex with them while telling any who do that they don't respect them for precisely that reason, they return relentlessly to the notion that merely having sex with one of them isn't any use at all - the women in question will only prove themselves to be of any prolonged entertainment value (clearly, their only purpose in life) if they are happy to be passed around between all four.

artwork might be better than the actual music, based on what i heard (though to be fair, i wasnt paying 100% attention). its a bit better, just cos funk is something snoop at least knows, but it seems to be to funk what snoop lion was to reggae.

It’s just so unbelievable that WBLZ wouldn’t be dealing with nonstop FCC complaints regarding The Jack-Off Hour with DJ Eazy-Dick, ruins the realistic tone of the album.

also lol @ this album having a realistic tone in the first place

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 21:54 (three years ago) link

this album always reminds me of the year that a 13-year-old middle school kid moved into our suburban neighborhood and was accepted into my gang of three 12-year-olds. it was just him and his dad, and his dad let us turn half of his garage into a fairly decent adolescent hangout base, complete with a weight set and a punching bag for us to not so much use as sit on/near, lots of his dad's LA Raiders stuff and back issues of Playboy, and CD boombox that played a lot of Doggystyle, The Chronic, and Stone Temple Pilots' Core while we played HORSE on his driveway basketball hoop.

also, big Snoop Dogg showed up on my Hulu the other night trying to sell me a six-pack of Corona and I realized I had missed them both.

kinda like the time Bleek opened a Jay-Z album.

Rage has some of the best verses on that shit. I even liked her one Death Row album, but man did she get short shrift by that label imploding.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 22:46 (three years ago) link

xxxp I do not actually think Doggystyle is a realistic album

JoeStork, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 22:53 (three years ago) link

wait, Snoop didn't actually go upstairs with that big booty bitch and get his balls licked up and down?

...devastated....

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 22:56 (three years ago) link

well i mean, he does seem like a fairly charming guy. . . so perhaps i'm wrong.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 23:50 (three years ago) link

so, this raises a fascinating question: what if the world becomes chaos and things fall apart and future generations discover a copy of doggystyle and think it's an actual radio broadcast?
