the la beef connection is a little eugh but i have to say i don't quiiite get the hate for CM.

Gotta say I'm pretty trepidatious about Michelle's forthcoming Marilyn Monroe biopic, though.

voted carey bc she does better work in 'an education' and 'never let me go' than i've seen from MW. who i don't dislike, but i had to look at imdb to see what she's done. there's a few things i ought to watch but im not bowled over. and im somewhat more stoked for 'shame' than MW playing marilyn.

too twee. i'm not super into girls who look like small boys. i've only seen her in lame movies and she wasn't good in them. can see where the hate comes from. although personally cgaf.

'an education' was great, but prob not pretty and boring enough for ppl who think douglas sirk films set the high water mark for cinema.

CM was cute in 'An Education' (and Pike wasn't dull!) but she's no Michelle Williams.

Man, I know it's middlebrow and all, but I found An Education pretty gripping.

I'd mind less if I didn't read a positive review which didn't praise the movie in the same terms over and over ("The debut of the next Audrey Hepburn"! "Quirky!" "British!" "It has Oscar written all over it!"). I'm sure I didn't read them all.

there's probably some crossover there but it feels different to me since CM hasn't taken any unpleasant stabs at being a singer or comic actress yet

I feel like they provoke the same kind of "you guys" eye-rolling from women.

Deschanel's an okay actress who comes off worse because most of her roles are written as male-indie fantasies by and for men.

Which must be why I don't hate her...

to whatever extent i've even heard of anyone discuss CM it seems like she's well liked by women, although she seems like one of those """"famous"""" types who gets an Oscar nod and a bunch of roles in movies that weren't necessarily big hits before people in America really have any idea who she is and is still in the middle of that process

I don't usually loathe celebrities until they do something egregious or have annoying voices or something. CM is at the very distant periphery of my consciousness (until someone mentioned 'An Ed' I wouldn't have put her together with the person mentioned wrt laBeouf) and that's all I know her from; a cute film that I barely remember. She's cute. We'll see if that turns into anything.

CM in her movies isn't an ingenue exactly (she's a gamine, if that's a noun), have no idea what her 'star brand' is, but it's not like zoey's whatever it is. zo-zo's is pretty toxic at this point.

I don’t disagree! And I don’t care at all about what Michelle Williams does - it’s just something that I remembered seeing on one of my feeds.

Michelle Williams is a marvelous actor.

I love her in all the Kelly Reichardt movies. I just looked and amazingly, of all the stuff she's done, I think I've only seen her in maybe one or two other things. Brokeback Mountain, Shutter Island, Manchester by the Sea (lol all location titles!) ... Wait, I know I saw The Station Agent but don't remember her in it, same with I'm Not There.

The first time I noticed how great she was, was in Me Without You.

I recall that Dawson's Creek documentary having a fan reaction to each character and three or more fans said "I hate her" or something along those lines and I've been reeling in confusion about it for 20 years.

I think it's 2020 and we can let that go because it was petty and hurtful -- and Michelle Williams obviously deserves better

I've seen a few films I found very overrated recently, so I might have been all set up to overrate Showing Up myself, I don't know. But I liked the mood, found everyone interesting, and am an easy mark for wounded-animal stories. I even liked Judd Hirsch for a change.

I liked it quite a bit.

I find Williams performances powerful but a bit offputtingly flopsweaty - which makes her well cast in Fabelmans. Mulligan has some kind of blank screen non-charisma that for whatever reason doesn’t work for me. She’s fun in Blink.

I'd have to look at them side-by-side to explain why, but I found her different here than in Wendy and Lucy or Certain Women. I like Kelly Reichardt's contemporary films so much more than the two set in the 1800s.

A Promising Young Woman is on Netflix, so I finally caught up with that. Definitely not a good movie--didactic, and so far-fetched--but it did hold my interest just for being so weird.

Am surprised I was so out-of-the-gate in my dislike of CM itt. I was under the mistaken impression I came by that arrival gradually

Michelle Williams by a mile and also she did a great job reading Britney’s book. It was like a single chapter before I accepted the voice as Britney’s.

I find CM very cold and therefore much less interesting to me.

I had to look Mulligan up. She was in Pride and Prejudice? I guess I remember her in that.
