thrilled to see the village hat shop is still around. I bought a fedora from them in high school when I thought I was really into swing music and the roaring 20s!

how would it help your style, though

dayo, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 02:51 (twelve years ago) link

I've read like half that book, it gets kinda boring

iatee, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 02:51 (twelve years ago) link

it's hard to know how low it would go on my head/how much ear it would cover?
i think the above hat would be more versatile than the ridiculous purple cloche i'm tempted to buy instead because i am a crazy old lady

for some reason i really want a purple hat for fall/early winter

Z-S what would you do with that book?

i drive a wood paneled station dragon (La Lechera), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 02:53 (twelve years ago) link

shit, didn't see this was on ILStyle, sorry! but i guess my style is probably so bad that carrying it around would maybe improve it?

In the long run, we will all be cyberpunks (Z S), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 02:53 (twelve years ago) link

xpost i would probably file it on my shelf next to my fireplace dvd. basically to bust out for the lols, but mainly just to make myself lol

it would be sort of neat to wallpaper a closet with it as well

I'm asking because I have this gigantic slang dictionary (Eric Partridge!) that I occasionally pull out for lols, and I support this sort of purchase.

i drive a wood paneled station dragon (La Lechera), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 02:55 (twelve years ago) link

Amanda, i like the kangol better, but i don't know if it would cover your ears. i think you should get a purple hat in any case!

horseshoe, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 02:56 (twelve years ago) link

didn't mean to hijack yr "should i buy this" question, la lechera! you would most likely look supercute in that hat fwiw

In the long run, we will all be cyberpunks (Z S), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 02:56 (twelve years ago) link

otm

horseshoe, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 02:56 (twelve years ago) link

i think the kangol is the only realistic option if i am being totally honest with myself

no hijack, buy the book if you can do something fun with it

for some reason, all 3 people i've mentioned this to have thought that buying it would be the stupidest thing in the entire fucking world

here's what bruce said about it in Applied Cryptography:

The meat of the book is the "Table of Random Digits." It lists them in five-digit groups -- "10097 32533 76520 13586 ..." -- 50 on a line and 50 lines on a page. The table goes on for 400 pages and, except for a particularly racy section on page 283 which reads "69696," makes for a boring read.

lol <3 that guy

that being said, i really want that book.. reminds me of kenneth goldsmith's 'uncreative writings'

horseshoe, Thursday, 8 September 2011 01:42 (twelve years ago) link

bright yellow rain slicker ... i am concerned that 90% PVC / 10% poly will just be way too unbreathable, especially as all my other jackets are waxed cotton or goretex.

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Sunday, 11 September 2011 16:43 (twelve years ago) link

i do have a 100% nylon coach jacket that is not too bad with shorts and a shirt.

how can you tell how "sweaty" a synthetic is going to be? does it have to do at all with the variations in the density of the "weave" or is it just choice of material?

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Sunday, 11 September 2011 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

I have a raincoat like that and it is...not breathable. Good for walking the dogs in the rain, though.

some lady (La Lechera), Sunday, 11 September 2011 17:09 (twelve years ago) link

supposedly it has a "breathable lining". maybe i just need to go XL so that there's tons of air circulation. i <3 the color so much.

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Sunday, 11 September 2011 17:19 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I would imagine that a raincoat like this made now would be superior to the 80s version that I am still wearing around. Mine is green and has whales on the inside.

some lady (La Lechera), Sunday, 11 September 2011 17:21 (twelve years ago) link

i think breathable lining is just a layer of mesh? i've had that before on rain jacket and it did nothing to help the breathability.

i think i really want bright primary colored outerwear right now

are those pants double reverse pleat? sort of square for my taste.

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Monday, 12 September 2011 14:20 (twelve years ago) link

i can't look at that rue la la link.

you can't argue with a classic two-button navy jacket, but what's the material? is it about $300?

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Monday, 12 September 2011 14:21 (twelve years ago) link

single pleat, pin dot medium weight wool

elmo argonaut, Monday, 12 September 2011 14:25 (twelve years ago) link

$350, marked down from $895 msrp -- i guess that is more than %50 off duh

i should state that i have 30 minutes to decide before sale closes, lol flash sales

elmo argonaut, Monday, 12 September 2011 14:43 (twelve years ago) link

well i am not a fan of pin dot personally but it looks like a good deal imo

thank you to the dedicated humans who helped me decide to buy this hat. i like it, and it's cute + can be worn in several ways. medium was the right size, might even be a little small!
this picture is dedicated to emil.y even though she probably won't see it
apologies for the armpit
