I've got 22 to come up. Poor me. (x-post)

"OK, looking over the list again I see there were a lot more rave tracks than I remembered ... which is probably because most of my faves weren't nominated :("

Complete crazy talk.

"I can't believe how weak that Magnetic Fields song sounded when I listend back."

Even more crazy talk. Frankly Stephen Merritt should have probably quit after that song.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:55 (nineteen years ago) link

you people are all nuts. NVTS.

The superchunk cover is a diservice to the original.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Comment on "100,000 Fireflies":

It is with this track that we get our first glimpse of Stephen Merritt's lyrical and musical genius. The line 'You won't be happy with me/ but give me one more chance/ you won't be happy anyway' is both desvastatingly sad and strangely funny. Pure joy!

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:57 (nineteen years ago) link

uh, except that he didn't write it.

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:01 (nineteen years ago) link

My problem is with the recording, not the songwriting or anything. It is a good song, but that track just sounds lost.

danh (danh), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Really? He's credited on my CD as writing it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Somehow I didn't even SEE "Today Was a Good Day" on that list.
Surely would've gotten a vote from me otherwise.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:04 (nineteen years ago) link

you-people-are-all-nuts seconded. the superchunk "fireflies" cover is atrocious. them original is a work of staggering genius. that piercing voice. the way she phrases "i also have a dobro." that mesmerizingly repetitive cheap keyboard sound. that soaring melody. it makes me cry every time i hear it.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:04 (nineteen years ago) link

and yeah, whatchoo talking about when you say he didn't write it? of course he did.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:05 (nineteen years ago) link

which is probably because most of my faves weren't nominated :("

Complete crazy talk.

How do you know what my favourite rave tracks are?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Superchunk cover sucks. Merritt wrote the song. Maybe Josh is confused by Susan Anway being the vocalist? She didn't write any lyrics...

From a Land of Grass Without Mirrors (AaronHz), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:08 (nineteen years ago) link

"How do you know what my favourite rave tracks are?"

I don't, but "Renegade Snares", "Hitman", "Dred Bass" and "Open Your Mind" should be among everyone's favorite rave tracks!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Again I am surprised at the low ranking of a huge '90s rap touchstone ("It Was a Good Day"). Was I the only person who had at least half hip-hop in his top 10?

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:15 (nineteen years ago) link

"...what really got me, 'Little Fluffy Clouds'. You can't imagine, or maybe you can, what hearing that for the first time, under the covers in the dark with my headphones on, sounded like."

I was just thinking about this, listening to this song today. I totally forgot to vote for it... but it definitely took the top of my head off on that first listen.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:22 (nineteen years ago) link

"one in a million" was my #2.

i've never seen the appeal of "your woman" so it's funny that they tied. funny for me anyway.

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I am sad to see "Little Fluffy Clouds" and "It Was a Good Day" so low.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:39 (nineteen years ago) link

This thread is just affirming my belief that the 90s were about 5 times musically better than the 80s. I'm sure if there was an 80s singles thread, I'd like about a fifth as many of the songs.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 05:01 (nineteen years ago) link

you're really unbelievable sometimes, Deej. Do you have any idea how unorthodoxly high a placement #48 is for a song like "One in a Million"? I'm shocked it even made it at all--I've never seen it make a 90s poll like this.

Um...considering I think it is easily one of the best songs of the 90s - I certainly enjoy it more than fucking REM - yes, I am filled w/ righteous anger, even though I thought the "insert..." part of the post would make it clear I was hardly SHOCKED by this low ranking.

I swear, if Breaking Atoms was nominated and made #7 on the list, you'd be bitching about how it should've been top five.

I'd be very pleased if it made top ten. I don't have unreasonable expections - "One in a Million" is simply a great song and I think its reasonable that on ILM I should expect it to place above #47.

And in case people didn't get it the first time, seriously - fuck REM.

:)

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 05:10 (nineteen years ago) link

aw c'mon REM are great, but i never would have voted for fucking "losing my religion"

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 05:11 (nineteen years ago) link

what is one in a million doing all the fucking way up there???

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 08:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Point is you've got to be reasonable. Even though I think it should be top ten, I'd be positively thrilled to see "Black Metallic" at this point because chances are it didn't make it at all. Lists are never going to look exactly like yours and it's very cool that Aaliyah made it all (and very well might make it again).

Also, cool about Cube (I think #40 is very reasonable) and "Losing My Religion" is by some margin R.E.M.'s finest moment.

PULP - "Babies" (394 points, 23 votes)

http://www.mackers.com/pulpworld/pulp_babies.jpg

"I always saw it as being totally sincere - he never got past the platonic stage w/ her, and she went off w/ someone else (even tho they both really wanted each other); him having sex with her sister ended any possibilities of this ever changing. I dunno, for me the last line works a lot better as a statement on the irony of the whole chain of events than as him trying to talk himself out of a problematic situation, the idea that neither of them got what they really wanted adds a bit of poignancy to the song, plus it's very in tune with the title ("babies" as a signifier of a lack of maturity, they were all too young to deal with things like they should have.) He sounds very bitter and regretful, and the "it happened years ago" line suggests that he's only thinking back on her, or maybe talking to her after a long time has passed (tho of course they could have been an item during all that time too, so the other interpretation is credible here, too, but I still prefer mine)"

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:24 (nineteen years ago) link

i thought the KLF would be higher

Justified And Ancient really has everything - 3-4 minutes, 3-400 great bits. Wynette is so delightful on it esp. her pronunciation of 'Mu Mu Land', the choir is so soothing, the rap so sublime and succinct yet satisfyingly nonsensical, that siren/cowbell thing in the background, the 808 usage, the funky geetaw - all combined with the rich KLF imagery (video and TOTP performance just brilliant), there are other perfect pop songs/moments/concepts but not sure any can TOP this

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:25 (nineteen years ago) link

yay! "Babies"!

" "Can You Forgive Her?" is the best thing they ever did. Just huge and bitter and wonderful. As you say, not what you expect in the top 10."

Hahaha well it's only downhill from here.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:47 (nineteen years ago) link

YES!!!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:49 (nineteen years ago) link

'Renegade Snares' stands out because, more than SUAD's frenetic 'Green Man' or other rave tracks that evoke chaps in wigs and breeches buzzing their tits off by integrating some influence of classical music and the DYS-factor that ensues (we approach and compose these tracks like symphonies), it FEELS slower - because of how often the beat is cut (and how stilted it is anyway), more reserved than the rollercoaster sensations that hardcore is known for. not to say it doesn't rise and fall like it should, but you can tell Haigh's thinking about the persistent beauty of Hertfordshire fields long after the 4am rush has ebbed and the ravers exited said fields in search of confectionary and kids TV.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:56 (nineteen years ago) link

(for the 4am rush factor multiplied maybe check out the recent High Contrast remix)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Wow, I'm shocked (but pleased) to see this in the top 40.
Bring on Altern-8 and Acen!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:58 (nineteen years ago) link

did none of you bastards vote for 'Terminator'?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:58 (nineteen years ago) link

No way Acen is making the top 40 (not with Part III anyway.) I figure "Energy Flash" will probably be the only other rave track to make it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah Steve it was right on the edge of making it, but I like "Lord of the Null Lines" and "T99" better so. . .

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I didn't, but I was in a bloody weird mood when compiling my lists.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't believe I was the only one who gave a first place vote to "Renegade Snares" though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:04 (nineteen years ago) link

well i prefer 'Dub War' and 'Far Out' personally - what is it that makes 'Renegade Snares' more popular really (assuming it is)? should i blame Mr Reynolds?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:08 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, i really expected "Bombscare" to be the one and only "rave" track this high up. but maybe that's the US/UK divide going on too

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Argh sorry guys, I should have voted.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:17 (nineteen years ago) link

and now that I think about it, where's "Sweet Harmony"?
