man, if Favre winds up getting the starting nod, I'll buy a Favre jersey, deface it, and root against him all year...

Aaron Rodgers probably will play a safer style of football for the team anyway, about now. He did almost lead them back against the Cowboys after Brett stunk it up last year.

I'd say trade him to the Jets, but they already have two guys that can throw interceptions...

this fucker decided to stay away and then changed his mind AGAIN

"Frankly, Brett's change of mind put us in a very difficult spot," team president and CEO Mark Murphy said in a statement released by the team. "We now will revise many actions and assumptions about our long-term future, all predicated on Brett's decision last March to retire.

"As a result of his decision, we invested considerably in a new and different future without Brett and we were obviously moving in that direction. That's why this wasn't easy. Having crossed the Rubicon once when Brett decided to retire, it's very difficult to reorient our plans and cross it again in the opposite direction -- but we'll put this to our advantage."

actually this is better

But those close to the story believed late Saturday night Favre was going to turn down Green Bay's invitation to return to camp with no guarantee he would be competing for playing time. Instead, sources said late Saturday, Favre had all but decided to take the team's offer of a rich, long-term marketing and promotions contract instead of playing.

AL/NL/OLY/X-GAMES/FAVRE

really? his funness merits his own "league" of news?

I tried listening to ESPN talk radio last Thursday on the baseball trade deadline to see if they had any updates and again today. I cut back four times in my 50 minute drive to work, NEVER once in the time I would listened would they shut up about Favre. I tried again today to see if there was any baseball news on the show, they NEVER went to any other story, everything was about Favre.

It is about like there is no other sport going on in the world. My God it is like worse than T.O. fever from a couple of summers back and that is hard to believe.

earlnash, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 04:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Question: Why would the Packers be obligated to pay him $20 mil to stay retired? Surely that has never happened before.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 04:48 (fifteen years ago) link

I guess ESPN just doesn't care that much about baseball. Here it is, the dog days of August, no football or basketball going on, this is supposed to be when baseball's media coverage is at its peak, right? So why the hell do I look at ESPN.com and the top story is that "college football practice has begun"? Seriously, who gives a FUCK about college football right now???

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 04:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I hear you. Don't get me wrong, I love football, but I don't really give a crud until week 1 starts. Pre-season football is completely useless.

Talking head on 'the herd' today on ESPN was going off from the 'preseason game' with the Colts and Redskins, that the Colts were at best a 4-12 teaqm and the Redskins could get to the NFC championship game. Of course never mind the Colts LOST ALL FOUR of their pre-season games the year they won the Superbowl. Beyond that, I remember reading an article in the Indy Star a couple seasons back on how since Manning has gotten good, the Colts pretty much never run any of their regular plays in the pre-season. Everything is completely generic when it comes to their routes and blocking schemes, that way they cannot use preseason footage to game plan for early season games.

earlnash, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 07:00 (fifteen years ago) link

I always think this is about Bernard Fevre when it shows up in site new answers. carry on.

I know, right?, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 14:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh God, please make it stop!!!

leavethecapital, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 14:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Pre-season football is completely useless.

i disagree. i moved adrian peterson WAY up on my fantasy draft board after watching him in 3 preseason games.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 14:49 (fifteen years ago) link

no football or basketball going on

au contraire, mr. snrub. training camp has been in full swing, preseason games have begun. football is on. and i personally care more about that than anything that could happen in baseball right now. i'm sure there are more like me, too.

MikeJonze, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 15:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Right here. Screw baseball.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 17:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Since my baseball team was basically eliminated from contention in like May, I am pretty excited about Chargers season. Not so excited about Golden Bears season, though.

As for baseball, wake me up in mid-September.

Rodgers should put Visine in Favre's Gatorade.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 18:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm back around to finding this interesting again; this just released on NYT:
"Thirty minutes before practice began, Favre climbed into his burgundy Cadillac Escalade and left without comment. According to multiple media reports, Favre and Coach Mike McCarthy agreed that having Favre take the field under any circumstances would prove too disruptive. Favre has apparently asked the Packers to trade him."
Really, you can't make this up!

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link

According to the latest, Green Bay might trade him to Tampa Bay. Now that would be interesting. Tampa already has a veteran quarterback who's pretty good at running the offense. Add to that the fact that Farve, by all accounts, is not particularly easy to coach and you have a quite interesting scenario. In other words, how many weeks before Gruden strangles Farve by his raggedy neck beard. It's enough to almost make me a Tampa Bay fan.

leavethecapital, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 23:27 (fifteen years ago) link

It seems to be that the wherever Favre's head is right now will make him a poisonous addition to any team that takes him on. I hate the Bucs, so they're welcome to have him I guess (though I'd rather see him be a Jet).

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 01:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I would majorly LOL for potential Favre/Mangini interactions.

God, I felt so bad for Mike McCarthy who had to do a presser about his endless meetings with Favre today. He was really doing the best he could and it's obvious all he wants is to go coach practice but is just totally getting fucked by this.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 01:31 (fifteen years ago) link

i feel bad for him to since mccarthy is the guy who helped brett into having One of His Best Seasons Ever At the Age of 38

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 6 August 2008 09:02 (fifteen years ago) link

No shit.

Why do I have this irrational hate for Farve's wife? I think I trace it to her embarrasing appearance in the Monday Night Football booth, but I'm not sure.

Favre to the Jets! Holy s**t, the comedic factor of this thing just went off the charts.

There is no way that Favre can go into NY and win with the Jets. C'mon, there is no way that would ever work, if it does it will be the flukiest thing in the fluky freakin' world. It will probably more likely lead into a seven sack multiple fumble and interception orgy with Richard Seymour having ripped off Favre's $4 jersey, placing it on on a first down marker and waving it in the Meadowlands like a flag.

ESPN John whats his name said this afternoon Favre would pick retirement over going to the Jets. Oh God thank you...this whole thing really did need a punchline.

They're dropping Pennington as we type. I think he'll be lucky to get a backup job.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:35 (fifteen years ago) link

I've been listening to Mike and Mike this morning and Greenburg just called Farve, "John Wayne in shoulder pads." LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOl!!!

First thing, the Packers have really pwned Farve by sending him to the Jets. If he had gone to Tampa, there would be an outside chance of getting to the Superbowl, but there is no chance in the AFC East. Without Farve, the Football Outsiders project the Jets as winning 7.2 games. With Farve, they could improve to what, 9 or 10 games. It's maybe enough to get back into the playoffs, but getting to the Superbowl ...ain't happening. Still, he is an upgrade over Pennington.

Second thing, everyone's looking at this from a fan's perspective and not from a general manager's. Good GM's are always thinking five to ten years down the road. At age 38-39, Farve isn't in the picture anywhere in five years. Here are some stats that explain what the Green Bay management may be thinking:

http://www.advancednflstats.com/2008/07/brett-favre-is-overrated.html

And a reminder of what the last couple of playoff appearances have been like:

http://www.coldhardfootballfacts.com/Articles/11_2318_Cheesehead_reality_bites.html

I'm not saying that Farve doesn't belong in the Hall of fame. He most certainly does. Nor I'm I denying he had a good year last year. He most certainly did, but at age 38-39 the chance that he will be as good as he was in 2007 as very slight.

leavethecapital, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Good GMs may be thinking 5-10 years down the road, but shitty GMs who are gonna get fired if their team has a bad season need themselves some gunslinger.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:42 (fifteen years ago) link

And that's what Farve is now, a stopgap. Plus, the Jets are going to make a shitload of money from product sales. So it's a good move for them in the short term. They almost had to do something to get some attention away from the Giants.

leavethecapital, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:47 (fifteen years ago) link

The press is going to DEVOUR him
