A charming, but grumpy oldster? Fah! I am waiting for Clint to play a prostitute with a heart of gold.

xp: It wasn't great acting but she was mega-personable.
This movie recalls that In & Out joke "And the nominees are ... Clint Eastwood in Coot."

The Archie Bunker stuff is really really broad. But 'charming'? Not so much, fortunately.
The barbershop 'education' scene is a bit WTF comedywise

I have to admit I was appalled, like Walt, that the priest kept turning up. Brian O'Byrne in Muillion Dollar Baby was a better priest for Clint (ie, cursing).

i haven't really read this thread but the biggest problem i had w/ this was how bad of an actor the boy was. also w/ the racist taunts it started to become like one of those absurdist snl skits except instead of it being funny it was just really really tiresome. also the ending was >_<

Dag dude. I thought the kid was fine insofar as he was supposed to be terrified or uncomfortable in pretty much every scene he's in. The taunts started to make me laugh about halfway through as it became clearer they were endearing and they got more creative. And what was wrong with the ending?? I mean yeah a little sentimental obviously but satisfying I thought.

I've not read any of this thread. Is this film a biopic based on "Il Grande Torino", the nickname given to the Torino football team in the Italian post-war period, usually acknowledged as one of the greatest club level teams in association football history, who all died in the Superga airplane tragedy in 1949? Is Eastwood playing Valentino Mazzola?

this was a ridiculous and preposterous picture, and i felt the only "real" character outside of the misanthrope CE plays and the most interesting one was the girl Sue...everything else was just perpetuating a stereotypebut i have to admit i was entertained, it was almost self-parodic at times
― Vichitravirya_XI, Friday, 30 January 2009 10:56 (fifteen years ago) link
some rly bad acting in this movie (basically everyone who isn't eastwood)
― cozwn, Saturday, 28 February 2009 21:32 (fifteen years ago) link
this is one of the worst films I can remember seeing.
so many stereotypes, awful acting, really clunky lines, massively convoluted themes with no point to any of them, tacked on violence. so fucking awful.
it was like "denis" with violence and racism. what was the point of the whole thing? this kid just needs a damn good stint of hard work and to call some people jerks and assholes, that'll straighten him out. maybe if racist old men ran this world we'd be in a lot better shape, they call it like they see it!

― Gus Van Sant's Gerry Blank (Eric H.), Monday, 5 September 2011 04:40 (twelve years ago) link
the acting is pretty bad
I actually got into a big argument about this with a friend the other night. I thought the two Hmong kids were really wooden and awful, but my friend swore that was "the point", that they were awkward kids. I don't buy it, I just didn't ever feel a genuine emotion out of either of them. The song at the end of the movie was hilarious though.
But on the whole I thought the movie was just okay. Some really awkward scenes, but I thought there were a couple that worked well. Not at all worth the hype, but not as terrible as its ILX reputation might suggest.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 5 September 2011 04:45 (twelve years ago) link
Amateur =/= bad.
But the boy in particular was as bad as anything I've seen in a major motion picture.

The scene where he was locked in the basement, banging on the door, was particularly painful.
