The title-track is the sort of propulsive pop joyride that can and will haunt my imagination for days...
I want to live that song, if that makes sense.

this is one of the most perfect albums ever; probably in my top 5.. i seem to appreciate it more and more as each year goes by. such immaculate production, not a single dud track, the lovely herbie hancock solo.. it's also perfect listening for stormy days indoors or sunny days cruising down the coat

Oh yeah, this song is probably the dopest thing on this record. I just played a bootleg live version of this other day. Now, what the hell was this about a Herbie Hancock solo????

xp hancock is credited with "keyboards" on "hunter and the hunted", i assume his part is the swirly rhodes-type solo 2/3rd the way through or so?

kinda sad how kerr looks all slim and cute in the videos for this record but by the time you get to "alive & kicking" he looks like a bloated retard, like the falling off of the music was matched by his physical decline

If you like this, you can get alternate (and great) versions of some of the songs on the "Themes 2" compilation of 12"s, so for example the German 12" of New Gold Dream, which has the "bitter end" lyrics like the live in the city of shite version, as well as Soundtrack for every heaven, which was an outtake. There's a vocals version of that (called "In every heaven", I think) that's on a DVD version of the album.

Surprised to see I've never posted on this thread, this album was my introduction to Simple Minds, I remember buying the purple-flecked gold vinyl of it after hearing "Promised You a Miracle" and "Someone Somewhere" on my local college radio. This and Sparkle in the Rain are the two essential albums of theirs for me.

― Vinnie, Thursday, 15 September 2022 03:58 (one year ago) link
Just discovered the stereo remix they did for DVD-A in 2005, and it’s well worth tracking down. Kick drum is mixed down a bit, and Derek’s bass mixed up — it all ends up feeling warmer and fuller.Sure, the gauzy coldness of the original was big part of the appeal, but I can’t help but love this even more.(The multitracks for Catherine Wheel and Promised You a Miracle were missing, so no changes to those two. Oh, and there’s a bonus track too, In Every Heaven, sounding all kinds of wrong coming in after King Is White.)
― Xgau Murder Spa (nikola), Thursday, 15 September 2022 13:02 (one year ago) link
Just gave this a spin. Like Vinnie, it's the only Simple Minds in my collection but very much deserves its place. Derek's bass is for sure the secret weapon on this album, anchoring all the cold synth tones and sometimes-histrionic vocals. A few good Mick Karn-lite moments thrown in there for good measure.
Guess I must be 40 next year. Wonder what my anniversary album is. Off to Google...

Happy 4-0 to New Gold Dream. I got my copy signed by Herbie Hancock recently. He spent quite some time examining the back cover but - no, he simply could not remember the session or playing the beautiful solo on Hunter and The Hunted. Hancock appeared on Heatwave’s 1982 album ‘Current’, as did Mel Gaynor so wonder if the connection was made there.
