Are you a robot?.....I mean I laughed heartily at that post, but still...

Not liking the Eagles makes me a robot? I don't like Steely Dan either....what does that make me?

I like most of Hotel California. Travis Tritt's cover of "Take It Easy" was at one time my favorite song, back when I was a country-listening youngster.

plus, "Dirty Laundry" is total punk rock!! ( hee hee ) seriously, always loved that one. that kick em when they're UP, kick em when they're down robot chorus rules.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 June 2003 22:37 (twenty years ago) link

They were far better than the Flying Burrito Brotherrs, or any alt-country band you can name.... Well actually, they may be one of my favorite bands ever, if I decided to make a list. I've honestly never much understood what people DON'T like about them. They were great.

chuck, Thursday, 19 June 2003 22:37 (twenty years ago) link

I've just never gotten into that bad facial hair, suede chaps, hickory smoked, Californian 70's mirror-sunglasses & cowboy boots brand of masturbatory herky-jerk. Call me crazy.

"Dirty Laundry," not to be pedantic, is Henley SOLO, not The Eagles. But, calling it Punk Rock is a bad call.....decrying the media for hounding celebrities and stirring up gossip is hardly punk.

no ones mentioned that big lebowski scene yet...

>>I've just never gotten into that bad facial hair, suede chaps, hickory smoked, Californian 70's mirror-sunglasses & cowboy boots brand of masturbatory herky-jerk. <<

What does this have to do with their music, though? (I never said I'd wannna invite them over to my house for DINNER for crissakes....Well, maybe I'd invite Joe Walsh. He'd be FUN to eat with!)

ps) They rock harder than most metal (and punk) bands, by the way.

chuck, Thursday, 19 June 2003 22:43 (twenty years ago) link

The scene in The Big Lebowski where The Dude gets kicked out of the cab for hating on the Eagles is perhaps the most sympathetic moment in film.

Adam A. (Keiko), Thursday, 19 June 2003 22:43 (twenty years ago) link

They spawned Don Henley, who in turn wrote 'Boys of Summer', which inspired the Ataris to cover it, which allows me to definitively name the most gratuitous cover ever.

Also, there was a pretty funny Onion story based on 'Take it Easy'

if joe walsh is the only tolerable eagle, it's only because he wasn't really an eagle to begin with ... he was just a hired hand.

the eagles were even more robotic than kraftwerk or their progeny, FWIW.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 June 2003 22:49 (twenty years ago) link

What does this have to do with their music, though?

I was thinking of a way to lambast their whole aesthetic. It's not just their style that bugs me (which it does), but their music doesn't really speak to me. I can't really empathize with "Life in the Fast Lane" or any of that shit. Also, their little morality tales lamenting the hollow shenanigans of Californian celebrity culture rings a bit false when you examine their own excesses.

They rock harder than most metal (and punk) bands, by the way.

Seems like you've been partaking in a bit too much of the "warm smell of colitas", Chuck my friend.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 June 2003 22:50 (twenty years ago) link

"Hotel California" scares Christians* because they think it's Satanic. So that's kind of cool.

*By "Christians" I don't mean all Christians, just the kind who get their information about rock'n'roll from pamphlets distributed at church youth group conferences. One of my friends in college had one of these pamphlets, and it remains one of my favorite pieces of music criticism. I wish I had stolen it from him.

JesseFox (JesseFox), Thursday, 19 June 2003 22:52 (twenty years ago) link

The Eagles weren't cool enough to be Satanic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 June 2003 22:53 (twenty years ago) link

it used to be "I can't tell you why" was the only eagles song I liked but now I like "one of these nights" also cuz it reminds me of neil young's "safeway cart" alot. my resistance to the group overall has worn down considerably (as it has to america and seals & croft. time heals all wounds.)

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 19 June 2003 22:55 (twenty years ago) link

if dostoyevski (see the chapter in brothers karamazov where Lucifer pays a visit to Ivan Karamazov) is correct, then Satan is indeed quite a shabby bore. in which case, the eagles could qualify as satanic -- coke-induced mental numbness = moral numbness!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 June 2003 22:56 (twenty years ago) link

>>he wasn't really an eagle to begin with ... he was just a hired hand.<<

workin on the dreams he planned to try,

Metal and punk bands tend to sound LOUDER than the Eagles. But to rock HARD, you need a rhythm section, Alex. (And right, Motorhead and AC/DC and the County Bishops and Guns N Roses and Turbonegro and Nazareth and etc etc etc have rhythm sections. I didn't say the Eagles rock harder than ALL metal and punk bands. Just MOST of them.)

Anyway, I think you proved what I've always suspected: People hate the Eagles because of what the Eagles supposedly STOOD for. But I don't CARE what they stood for. I care about their SONGS.

chuck, Thursday, 19 June 2003 22:57 (twenty years ago) link

Count Bishops, not County Bishops. (Which are called vicars, right? And weren't the Vicars some band that Lemmy was in once? Weird!)

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 June 2003 22:59 (twenty years ago) link

Also, "Take It Easy" is one of the best songs ever written, period.

chuck, Thursday, 19 June 2003 23:00 (twenty years ago) link

They're better than Manitoba or Neil Young.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 19 June 2003 23:00 (twenty years ago) link

Charitable? OK. They have been smart enough to stay alive and clean, when many of their contemporaries have dropped dead from too much rock and roll.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 19 June 2003 23:01 (twenty years ago) link

I also bristle at songs wherein the male protagonist refers to his lady friend/paramour/significant other as "pretty mama" (ala "One of these Nights"). And Henley's falsetto makes me palpably angry.

Eagles-hate seems to be one of those knee-jerk positions that even hipsters well-versed in tons of reclamation projects can't seem to shake.

As far as satanic - man, I don't know but the gatefold to Hotel California is downright creepy. That sort of sepia washed-out photo of all those people staring back at you; and what's that guy doing up there on the terrace?!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 19 June 2003 23:03 (twenty years ago) link

i hate what they stand for, but i like their music anyway. sometimes, knowing that they were so horrible even heightens my enjoyment of their music, in a way that i cannot explain - except that it has very little to do with ironic appreciation - i'm sure that makes no sense. damm, the eagles rock.

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 19 June 2003 23:06 (twenty years ago) link

Did I suggest otherwise?

Anyway, I think you proved what I've always suspected: People hate the Eagles because of what the Eagles supposedly STOOD for. But I don't CARE what they stood for. I care about their SONGS.

I think their music is staid, trite, lifeless, dull, banal and unexceptional. Walsh added a bit to their arsenal, but not enough to save them from inspiring lethal ennui.

That sort of sepia washed-out photo of all those people staring back at you; and what's that guy doing up there on the terrace?!

Ha! The Christian youth pamphlet cited that very gatefold. It claimed the guy on the terrace was Anton LaVey and that the whole song was about the founding of the Satanic Church. (Also cited as servants of the dark lord, for reasons that now escape me, were Olivia Newton-John, the Bee Gees and Fleetwood Mac. Oh, Fleetwood Mac was because Stevie Nicks is a witch.)

I like "Boys of Summer" better than any Eagles song, but I give most of the credit for that to Mike Campbell. OK, the lyrics aren't bad, in a self-important aging Baby Boomer way. The Eagles themselves...they were an OK singles band, right? "Heartache Tonight" is pretty great. "Lyin' Eyes" is nice. I can live a long, long time without ever hearing "7 Bridges Road" again, tho.

JesseFox (JesseFox), Thursday, 19 June 2003 23:15 (twenty years ago) link

Also, there's the paradox that my former brother in law Marvin pointed out to me once: The music in "Take It Easy" takes it to the limit, but the music in "Take It To the Limit" takes it easy! Weird!!

the 1978 eagles = the 2003 phillies (jim thome = baseball's joe walsh. both thome and walsh are connected to cleveland, so the comparison fits!)

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 June 2003 23:21 (twenty years ago) link

Ah! No wonder you didn't do a defending the indefensible on 'em.

Also, I had meant to second Ben Boyer on the Langley "Desperado" - it was easily the best thing about that record, which I generally didn't care for.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 19 June 2003 23:29 (twenty years ago) link

Tad: let us hope Jim Thome never googles himself here...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 19 June 2003 23:43 (twenty years ago) link

I like them at their most laid back because there they reach a fine pitch of AOR miserableness: "Desperado," "Take it the Limit," "New Kid In Town," and especially "I Can't Tell You Why" (possibly the most laid back hit song of all time?). Otherwise, the early rockers are just gross. The incongruity of the barely-supressed finger-pointy paranoia and the easy-rollin' rhythms give me the giggles. Like, WTF? People don't find this weird? Or is the way nobody hears the bitch-baiting just like the way nobody hears the gayness in "YMCA" and "In the Navy"?

I think it's impossible NOT to factor in what 'they stood for' when you make an estimate of a band's career -- it's part of the whole Eagles package, same as their clothes, their album covers, etc.

Eagles - Get Over It lyrics
I turn on the tube and what do I see
A whole lotta people cryin' "Don't blame me"
They point their crooked little fingers ar everybody else
Spend all their time feelin' sorry for themselves
Victim of this, victim of that
Your momma's too thin; your daddy's too fat

Funny but kind of damaging to the Eagles' legacy. They did it to themselves by stooping to that level.
