quintessential baltimore moment, talking with rjyan about the loft he was living in with 4 other people, I asked him how much it was and he said 'oh it's $150 each but we're thinking of getting a 6th person in to get it down to $120, that would be sweeeeeet' and I think I just started rapidly blinking while trying to wrap my mind around everything in his statement

sometimes i actually get nostalgic thinking about how much the rent was in my first baltimore apartment

haha yeah i lived in pretty swank mt. vernon yupster apartments both times i lived there, nicer than any other places i've ever lived, and i still paid less than anywhere else ever. (except for the house in philly with crack dens at either end of the block.)

We've been in Baltimore now for a week and we're both taken aback by how friendly everyone is. Does anyone know of a place you can have a beer and sit with your computer, but that's not a bar?

Just grab a big to-go cup from somewhere, put your beer in there, then you can go ANYwhere that's not a bar.

today i was driving by lexington market and there was a man idly pedaling his bicycle in circles in the middle of the street. he was right in front of a parking garage's exit, so as one would expect some portions of his orbit were not visible to drivers coming out of the garage. sure enough someone almost hit him. he then followed the car and yelled at the driver, then kept circling around again as the car moved, and yelling at him again. it was pretty friendly. i can't stop thinking about it.

i dunno how much insight i can give you on where to live not knowing your budget or your preferences or where you're gonna work etc. but i can definitely offer some general advice and my wife is a real estate buff and some other people i know are super knowledgeable about different parts of the city if you really want some help. you moving for a job?

yes it's a teaching job--it's in baltimore county, but i would like to live in the city if possible. and live alone if possible.

that's cool, r-town is nice, kinda the only suburb that is not significantly whiter than the city, and if you wanted to live in the city it would be a light commute. lot of different neighborhoods to check out depending on your priorities, i guess. it occurs to me i have no idea where you live, where you moving from?

mt vernon is centrally located, decent rent and quick access to 83 north to get to the county

have you seen that show 'the wire'

My understanding is that all the men in Baltimore look like Stringer Bell.

public trans is pretty weak here and likely doesn't go where you need it to go without a lot of bus transfers

but some of it is free now which is gr8

haha. oh yeah buffalo, i do remember you mentioning that! i wasn't sure if you lived there now or was just from there.

i love mount vernon, used to work there. my fav place to live that i actually lived was butchers hill/upper fells point, which is prob pricier now, we kind of lucked into really low rent there. but yeah public trans is weak, not a great city to get around in w/o a car.

we have a great water taxi btw
