i have a taste for shit and i will wade through a lot of it and be able to tell you what each and every person had for lunch that day

tbh i think it's funny when olds are so hung up on long forgotten culture wars that they're still too mad at Stone Temple Pilots or whatever to even notice how much worse bands have reached their level of success since then

some dude, Thursday, 25 August 2011 03:25 (five years ago) Permalink

yeah there's just something about the stone temple pilots that really gets me & has always gotten me. like I'd go to a staind show and review it favorably before I'd piss on the stone temple pilots if they were on fire. dk about yr "culture wars" thing but it sounds like projection or something I just really vehemently hate the stone temple pilots

i mean like "range life" style real indie lifers vs. scott fucking weiland culture wars

some dude, Thursday, 25 August 2011 03:29 (five years ago) Permalink

lol I think yr bringing some grand narrative to the relatively uncontroversial point that scott weiland is a no-talent

Man Steven Tyler, I love you and all of your 1970s hard rockin' rock tunes but I think this is absolutely crazy talk. Both are stinky piles of shit, but STP is like that little piece of cat shit that gets stuck behind the litter box for a month and you don't even notice it right away and when you do its all hard and crusty and doesn't smell anymore. Staind, on the other hand, is like if a brontosaurus took a shit through the roof of your house directly on your head.

actually this is exactly right. if a brontosaurus shits on your house and it lands on your head at least it's funny and you have a story to tell you can get laffs w/ for years, or, worst case scenario, you get to die. occult cat shit just stinks for fucking ever and doesn't even have an "at least there's this" upside

of all the people i've ever interviewed, weiland is the most self-pitying and self-destructive and pathetic. but i will say that 'vasoline' is one hell of a riff.

Almost completely OT, but I just realized how much Scott Weiland looks like Dennis Duffy.

This seems like a record Dennis might own, actually.

Rollins' vocals are the worst thing about the "Four Sticks" cover. The riff just sounds like half the riffs on Weight.

誤訳侮辱, Monday, 30 April 2012 17:06 (five years ago) Permalink

Man, that 4 Non Blondes cover is nowhere near as shitty as I was hoping it would be. I mean, it's basically a generic bar band cover of Misty Mountain Hop with some occasionally execrable improvisations from the lead vocalist.

That song had the biggest drop for people in general.

First time was "OK, that's an interesting one"
Second time was "That's quite good"
third time was "Noooo!!!! Make It Stopppp!!!"

oh man, Blind Melon is how I first got into "Out on the Tiles" and I can't even make it through their version anymore...

I'll duck some tomatoes and say that the STP song is good. I actually heard it before the original and my mom bought me Houses of the Holy in 8th grade as a result.

The Blind Melon track is actually pretty great.

D'Yer Maker is probably LZ's worst song to begin with, that crappy pun on down.

I bear no malice at all towards Sheryl Crow but I doubt she can redeem it

somehow Hootie pains me the worst because I'm convinced 90% of people thought (and likely still think) that was a Hootie original, being as it was a Zep b-side.

evol j, Thursday, 9 March 2017 17:30 (three months ago) Permalink

I haven't heard this since it came out and I can't really recall anything about it, I vaguely recall the STP & Helmet/Yow covers, vaugely & this came out when I was peak Rollins Band fan and even I couldn't get it together for them.

But to me the weirdest thing about this is...these are 12 very weird selections for a Zeppelin tribute album, like if you asked me to name 12 Zep songs these wouldn't be the first 12 (except for "Good Times Bad Times") I would think of

chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 9 March 2017 17:35 (three months ago) Permalink

Oh shit, I just realized I never posted this here: this comp was the first time I heard Hootie and, as noted, theirs was a pretty solid cover and I bought their album sight unseen on that basis. WHOOPS.

Still get worked up about this:

Rollins once told me in an interview that he changed the words to the bridge in "Four Sticks": "I couldn't sing 'When the owls cry in the night.'"
