yeah, that's a tough one. cafe at whole foods in time-warner center, maybe.

lauren, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:17 (seventeen years ago) link

i've been similarly unimpressed with linc ctr ollie's but columbia ollie's' veg dumplings are very good and their chicken and broccoli is habit-forming

gabbneb, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:18 (seventeen years ago) link

cafe at whole foods in time-warner center, maybe

aren't the whole foods cafes really expensive? there's bouchon bakery there too but that's probably even moreso.

gabbneb, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:19 (seventeen years ago) link

if you're going to the met (and if you're going to barbiere, i hate you), there's food inside, of course

gabbneb, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:21 (seventeen years ago) link

you mean controversy as ch0wh0und removing posts stating the difara's was closed? that was totally, utterly stupid. removing posts containing possibly damaging hearsay is one thing, not allowing people to say that the doh has closed a popular eatery is quite another. generally i like c-hound, but when they screw up they tend to do it a big way. all they did was add more fuel to eater's bizarre grudge against them.

lauren, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:21 (seventeen years ago) link

salad bar at wf is $7.99/lb and the sandwiches tend to be better than deli fare and about the same price. not bargain basement , but cheaper than any other sit down option save fast food in that area.

lauren, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:23 (seventeen years ago) link

also, i think you can get a hot plate (roast chicken, lasagne, ribs, etc) w/ two sides for $7.99.

lauren, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:25 (seventeen years ago) link

hmmm...someone said josie's, i've only been to the burger place on the east side. and i've only been to the ollie's in times square, at age 11 after seeing 'miss saigon' with my mom.

bell_labs, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:25 (seventeen years ago) link

where to go for brunch plz? preferably someplace with a liquor license but that's not a deal breaker.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:26 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, i only know from going WANT at whole foods' indian bar and then getting taken for near $20 after waiting on their ridiculous line

gabbneb, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

area?

lauren, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:28 (seventeen years ago) link

i've never gotten pies'n'thighs brunch but i'm thinking about it this weekend! does rockstar bar have bloody marys?

bell_labs, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:28 (seventeen years ago) link

xp

lauren, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:28 (seventeen years ago) link

if you mean the contraversy about doh closing difaras in general and not just chowhound's response....whatever, Di Fara's is dirty as hell, always has been...and I've eaten in worse. Getting swept up in a doh sweep where tons of places are getting notices isn't too scary. If you've looked at the doh ratings online, you wouldn't eat out at all.

dan selzer, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:29 (seventeen years ago) link

brunch - prune, blue ribbon bakery, home, clinton st baking co (no drinks?)

gabbneb, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:31 (seventeen years ago) link

josie's isn't a terrible choice but it's not super-cheap and i don't think much of the food there

gabbneb, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:33 (seventeen years ago) link

besides...mouse droppings are an italian specialty no? Now thats-a spicy meatball! fuggedaboudit!

dan selzer, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:34 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, that was the response i was hoping for

I don't ever remember spending over $10 for a pretty good amount of Whole Foods Indian, and it's good. Maybe I'm just nice like that with the portion control. In any case, they should really put a scale by the bar. Do they have one?

Also, there's something weird about standing in the grocery line with your food - that always annoys me.

Just hit Spicy and Tasty. You know what? It was spicy and tasty. Best cold sesame noodles ever. Wasn't sure what to get because even the "vegetable" options have ingredients like "pork blood". Will have to go back. Flushing is CRAZY. Right next to a malaysian place that's supposed be great.

flushing is my new favorite place.

lauren, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:28 (seventeen years ago) link

If the name of the place isn’t a tip-off, then the bright-red, oversize chili pepper positioned atop a glass pedestal inside the vestibule at Spicy & Tasty is. When the owners closed the original Roosevelt Avenue basement-level space, located in a somewhat seedy mini-mall, fans of the iconic pepper and its multiple Sichuan applications mourned.

LOL, went to to the original in '00 or '01. so good, in such a sketchy food court. now i want to go to the new one.

kids...

can we talk about eating in south bk? i have the parents in town and need to sort a sat night dinner...i know theres lots of talk of smith street and all that..whats worth checking into?

bb, Thursday, 5 April 2007 15:14 (seventeen years ago) link

on the high-end, Saul is supposed to be good but I've never had dinner there. The Grocery is the highest rated and most manhattan-esque. Chestnut however, is very classy and very delicious and I highly recommend it. Lower down the $$$ pole, Cafe Cubana or whatever the Cuban place is called, is pretty good, but for better bets, go around the corner on Atlantic Avenue...Bachus is one of brooklyns better french bistro type places, wed. night is 2 for 1 entrees, and next door is Stan's Place, really pretty good and pretty fun "new orleans" food, including crazy tasty beignets. It's also a great brunch spot.

Even cheaper/more casual is Zaytoons on smith st., pretty classic and dependable middle-eastern food, probably better then the more hardcore places on atlantic.

I'd say go for Chestnut, it's in the heart of Smith St. and is really good. You probably should get a reservation.

I went back to Spicy and Tasty last night and it totally delivered. I had a diced chicken with peanuts in spicy sauce and it was basically the tastiest kung-pao chicken in the world. We also had some sort of sweet rice balls in hot wine desert thing that almost made me throw up.

dan selzer, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:32 (seventeen years ago) link

shit, forgot i had even asked this this am...thnx, dan!

anybody else got a feel? ...my dad is a cook, but hes not so into manhattanany, "fancy" sort of places...we could also easily do sunnyside, might be more fun for everyone...

bb, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:36 (seventeen years ago) link

If you do sunnyside/woodside, the best places are De Mole on the southside, incredibly cheap, incredibly high-quality mexican food, and Sri Pra Phai for thai over in woodside. Neither are manhattany. Both are authentic and high quality and cheap.

dan selzer, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:51 (seventeen years ago) link

i owe you another drink, dan

bb, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:54 (seventeen years ago) link

i highly recommend burmese cafe, on roosevelt and 72nd. it's close to sri, might be less crowded and zoo-y on a saturday (though it's small so perhaps not). really, really, really good food.

lauren, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't have nearly the distinguished palettes of Dan & Lauren, but my take on the Smith St environs:

The Bedouin Tent on Atlantic makes their own flatbread fresh for your order, that's the most fantastic thing I've noticed about them so far. Mostly I've only had take-out falafel but they have a lovely back garden and a wider menu.

Fragole on Court St (near Carroll) is my top top Italian place. Everything I've ever had there was good (with the possible exception of desserts, I don't think sweets are their specialty ) and it's hard to convince myself to order anything BESIDES the rigatoni bolognese, it's so rich and stewed-all-day-y. Their bruscheta also, despite having only four ingredients, has always been amazingly sweet and complex-tasting. It's a good thing I don't live closer or I'd eat there like three times a week. http://www.fragoleny.com/

Laurel, Thursday, 5 April 2007 18:12 (seventeen years ago) link

absolutely...Fragole is a gem. It's just up the street from the much more famous and hip Frankies, which, admittedly, is awesome but always has a wait. I used to go to Fragole a lot when I lived down there (before that it was Max on Court and even before that, Mignon, which was great), and have actually driven down to carrol gardens for a "double-date" of sorts there.

Bedouin Tent is pretty good, but I don't think it's as good as Zaytoons. They're similar, as are Olive Vine in Park Slope, which has gotten really bad, and Black Iris on dekalb, which has good pitzas.

dan selzer (and maybs others) you might be interested to know we got a large and interesting disco collection in at the store.

also, dan selzer, since this food is ostensibly about EATING FOOD, I would ask you what is your favorite restaurant in china town?

dmr, Monday, 25 June 2007 17:28 (sixteen years ago) link

dmr, Monday, 25 June 2007 17:28 (sixteen years ago) link

MORE, NEW stuff.. the stuff from a month ago or so is mostly all gone. all the high end stuff, anyway. but we have a bunch of disco rarities again. and about 4 bins of new disco 12s.

ian, Monday, 25 June 2007 17:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh man, Ian, that last visit to Academy was like, my one alloted record store shopping trip for the year. Actually, I'm going to Jerry's in pittsburgh this weekend which I'm excited about. I didn't get much good disco during that last Academy visit last week, though some nice basics like Knock on Wood...was happier with my cheap rock buys (Roxy's Manifesto, Bryan Ferry's first solo, The Strangler's Gospel..., and TWO vintage old-school boston scene Propellor 7"s from the Post-Punk/DIY bin.

As far as Chinatown, I haven't really eaten there much so I have no favorites. As mentioned above I've been going to Spicy and Tasty in Flushing, which is seriously good.

Back in queens, finally hit Himalayan Yak...the tibet stuff was just ok, but the Nepali stuff was really good, this dry vegetable dish that was out of this world.
