What about me?

"The downloads are coming from the same IP address as your message board posts."
Hah, why even bother posting something like that when you know it's not true.

Well, it was fun while it lasted, sorry to see that this is not the real deal.

meh.

as little precious indie meta art-ish pranks go, i've seen better than this fake indie music sharing thing -- and also worse.

Thanx for that, Grady. Wow, loads of stuff here, I'd better start seeding first, though!
Thanks again.

2) What is rockism? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)

Rockism is when you are valuiing rock music at its best. It is the way you are looking at the music. It is between the listner and the writer. The idea of rockism slowly started around the 70s in England.Rockism sort of relates to racism in a way. When you have a rockism mind, you will always have your ideason what is good and what is bad. Rockism should be avoided, just like racism should be avoided. It is betterto be open-minded and try different things out. It like trying out new stuff, you will see what it is like. Ifyou just see one stuff, you might be missing out on other stuff you like better

3) Post a link to your favorite picture of Cat Power

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)

Surjan Stevens because of his lyrics that relate to the family and culture, etc. He a great
range of what he plays and that is what I like. I have heard a few of his lyrics and I
enjoyed them. The 50 state idea, i think it a great idea. The deerhoof's music is not suited for me.His music is everyone that can enjoy and that why I like him better over deerhoofs. He just
manages to get everything done. Waiting for the CT ablum :D.

5) How many invites do you require?

One please

Thank You

2) rockism is the idea of making music through the musician their own creative freedom, rather than through pre-packaged music created by labels or merely for the pop of it. basically, music made for the music, and not to make a quick buck. there is argument that no music is purely made without any commercial thought processes behind it, and that all music has some form of produced aspect to it. but basically the term is for bands that don't go with synthesizers and pro tools to hype up their music, rather they perform on the instruments themselves as well as the lyrics, the band being a huge part of the creation of the music. the term is more for rock or metal bands, which is where the actual term came from. I believe the term also began to be in use in britain, where people began preferring this over pop music. think of rock bands in the 80s, and you'd get a good idea of what this whole movement is. pop music is the opposite of this.

3) http://myspace-541.vo.llnwd.net/00375/14/51/375041541_l.jpg

4) Hmm, I like both. Deerhoof has this continual beat that makes you want to nod along to it. It actually reminds me of an art exhibit I attented a couple of years ago called "Cloud City" by FriendsWithYou, where they had this background music to set an installatio they considered a playgound. I am a sucker for the guitar though, and Sufjan Stevens is a lot like the music I listen to. It's much mellower, and his voice compliments the music beautifully. Ultimately, I would probably go with Sufjan Stevens on a day where I'm being told I can only pick from these two artists. Then again, I could definitely find myself listening to Deerhoof on days where I need to vacuum the house. I'm not sure... I guess I can't decide really. They both have their themes and sounds that make them the artists they are. I can really get into the fact that they both have their own sound, and it doesn't quite remind me of other artists today- unless we're going to mix bands together to get their sound.

5) just one.

i really hope I can find out if I'm in soon!

1) Killers - Sams Town / Zero 7 - the garden / The Knife - Silent Shout
2) Rockism, is the belief that only the "sincere" artists are deserved credit. The lines are drawn between "real artists" who express themselves only as a means for self-release or self expression and those who are in it to "make a buck". It generalizes most of the 60s and 70s as the "lost golden years" and discredits much of the 'post-discovery' music. While I agree that music will never be the same/as good as it was back in the day (IMOP the overexploitation of sexiness in the pop world, and dismissal of it in the modern rock world) i do not agree with the belief that everything made to make a dollar isnt "good". When a blatantly commercial album such as "futuresex/lovesounds" comes out, in rockism it is grounds for dismissal as a legitimate piece of art, however, expressing ones need to dance or "bring sexy back" is just as a legitimate form of self release as many critically solid albums. Furthermore, it can mean something special to someone, even if that someone is unknowingly part of consumerist machine that recycles money and the same albums constantly. Rockism also disregards the new musics of the last twenty years (hip hop, trance, techno, post-rock) and many of these musics serve an important cultural purpose for different american societies. What this argument against new musics ends in is a strong importance of genuine artistry mostly focused on white male songwriters. I believe this is racist, basically saying that white people are allowed to "get it on, bang a gong" with critical recognition while those in the corners trying to escape their troubles "by partying/drinking bacardi like its their birthday" are stupid. All music serves a genuine purpose sociologically, whether for escapism, protest, or tradition. In conclusion, id definitely rather spend my money trying to support bands like lightning bolt than buy the new chingy single, but i dont feel the need to look down on people who do.
3) [image]http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/images/news/images/cat_power.jpg{/image]
she kind of has a linda ronstadt-silk purse thing going on in this one.
4) deerhoof. I may be a little biast as a former san franciscan. deerhoofs music is exciting and loud and experimental and new, like freejazz. It makes me really happy when a band can be a geographic reference point, (the san francisco noise sound) and also rise above being much better than that. Nobody has really got it quite as down in that respect of music as much as them, especially because they are loud and noisy. For me, any thing that blazes along the path that sonic youth blazed "pop music+dissonance+guitars=great" is super awesome music. Sufjan, and i think this this is just me, scares me. I know hes got this sort of cute thing going on, and everyones all gaga over it, but i think there is some alterior motive. 50 albums about every state, sufjan? thats too ambitious. So much that i get the feeling that he is going to try to take over the world, overthrow the government and start world war 3. That may sound a little crazy, and nobody believes me, but you will all see, hes a very ambitious young man.
5) Just one please!

Its cool, Davis. Dont stress out over it or anything.

You seem to have put a lot of time and effort into your Rockism essay. Where did you gather your info from?

Oink Administrator, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 21:20 (seventeen years ago) link

i dont know, i just kind of looked up what rockism was (i was familiar with the idea but not neccessarily the term) and then just said a bunch of things i thought should be said (i have alot of built up hatred for rock critics, especially pitchfork ones. but thats a whole different story)

davedestroybox, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 21:30 (seventeen years ago) link

If you think Pitchfork is bad, try reading Stylus some time!

Oink Administrator, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 21:36 (seventeen years ago) link

no thank you, i consider it a blessing that i have never heard of stylus. but i did just go over there and check out "Top Ten Musical Signifiers (Almost) Guaranteed To Make Me Fellate A Record Regardless Of Its Quality". what an arbitrary and weird list.

1) Thom Yorke - The eraser, Kristin Hersh - Hips and makers, Therapy - infernal love
2)Rockism is quite the opposite of pop music, in fact a criticism to popular music. Rockism is an ideology which supports musicians who make music for the music. Musicians who want to express their feelings, composers who compose authentic music.
Rockism is opposed to any kind of music is not genuine. That's why it's opposed to trip-hop for example, because it's hip-hop with any other kind of music, eg rock n' roll. That makes trip-hop not genuine, so against rockism beliefs.
Rockism mostly supports rock and metal music. That would explain and the term.

4)Deerhoof can give me the beat I need when I do other things. Helps me not to get bored when for example doing the dishes :) His music has that thing that gives you energy. It certainl keeps you awake.
Sufjan Stevens is more melodic. His voice is more melodic and "married" perfectly with the music.
I find them different so not easy to compare.
Do I really have to choose? :)

It's true: Deerhoof can give you the beat you need when you do other things. :) :) :)

Confounded, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 14:39 (seventeen years ago) link

@Confounded
Yeap! :) Happily music has many branches.
There are musics that are just upraise you.
Musics that can change the way you feel and even the way you think (who can doudt that whoever composer or musician can do that is a really great artist? :) ). I feel that way about radiohead. :)
Musics that are ruined with bad lyrics. Such as Therapy. I love Therapy's music but I don't find any meaning on their provocative lyrics. They don't shock me or anything, I just don't find any meaning.

As we mentioned Rockism above, I don't believe in genuine music but in genuine artists.
Approximately 6 months ago I discovered a band called MIG. It's a trip-hop group located in France. I liked their music so I searched for their album but I couldn't find them anywhere in Greece. After a lot of search I found the singer's mail. I told her that I want their albums but I don't own credit card to purchase their albums through internet. Well, she send me the albums from France without asking any money! If that's not genuine then what is it?

Excuse me for the irrelevant to that thread post but bands like these worth at least a mention, don't you think? :)

dthemora, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 15:33 (seventeen years ago) link

dthemora:

That is truly a heart-warming story. Thank you for sharing!

But if you are getting free CDs from artists so easily, what need do you have for a file-sharing service such as ours?

Oink Administrator, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 17:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Thank you :)
Just happened once. :)
I'm using torrents to download software and music alot. I can't afford to pay 20 euro/CD. As for the MIG, to tell you the truth, firstly I searched for torrents but I couldn't find any.
I hope my english make sense.. :)
