Nice to see that performance. He talks about it in the book Ghosts Behind the Sun.
I don't think it sounded that out there apart from that electronic scree.
Didn't think noise had become that much more the norm that I'd be that oblivious to it. maybe the playing otherwise was a bit slack, but this is '79 not '53 or something.

the LP "the world we knew" is really fantastic, i listen to that once every week or two

I really like live sets by the band with George Reineke in the lineup. Not sure when he joined but a lot of what I have is around '89.
He had a deformed hand but was a smoking guitarist.

I just saw a review for a new compilation cd Tav did of lost r'n'r greats I think. It's in the current Wire but may be others elsewhere I haven't seen yet.

It looks pretty good, even if it does start with the overly familiar (and admittedly insanely brilliant) Johnny Burnett Train Kept A Rollin.

yeah, one reason that clip upthread's so weird is the host lady acting like tav's this extreme noise assault or something when the johnny burnett original is way more unhinged and aggressive.....

sure, the burnette original is louder and fiercer and in some ways more raucous but panther burns' version is pretty in your face with the electronic squalls and beeps and the out of tune vocals. it's clearly rockabilly filtered through a post-punk sensibility and it's no surprise the host didn't get it.

i mean if there's a vein of rockabilly that tav's channeling here it's the "outsider" stuff of hasil adkins, stardust cowboy, etc.

i love how he responds to her needling. "well, the best of the worst."

also it's so fucking great that this was on the morning show. if i woke up at 7 AM and saw this on TV i'd cry tears of joy.

Burnette is a cover too. Is great version and I love a lot of the Burnette stuff from this era. There's a great Charly cd with most of it that's dead cheap.
Paul Burlison the guitarist has been cited as an influence by Richard Thompson among others. Though I think Tav or somebody in Ghosts Behind The Sun says the guitar was actually played by somebody else.
I think the original version of the song is a jump blues by Tiny Bradshaw. Think that's pretty wild itself.
