I am always suckered in by Me'Shell at first but then repeated listenings make me tired, too much work for not enuf payoff. But I am a sucker for other things that probably aren't as "good" so there we have it.

I keep meaning to dig deeper into the album and always get snagged -- in a good way (/Avant) -- on "Park Bench People"/"On the Red Clay" or whatever he titled it.

Haven't had much of a chance to wander through youtube linkages, etc. But I finally gave the Foreign Exchange album a spin and whether or not it fits properly into this category, it's really something else.

Does the new Raphael Saadiq album have any place being mentioned on this thread? It's fucking fantastic; one of my favorite albums this year.

I figured Leave It All Behind was fair game, given that it was brought up two or three times, and the prominence of Muhsinah on the album. Sorry.

Regardless, the highlight of a lot of it for me is the disconnect between the three-part harmonies, lush production and the almost mundane quality of some of the lyrics. (Not in a bad way...just...it's a lot of day-to-day details of relationships. Bringing you wings for yo' lunch break, and so forth.) Entrancing stuff.

One of the best albums of the year. I love how it captures both the mundanities and complexities of a relationship... and shows how they intertwine.

I also love how the Phonte vs female vocals are played against each other in unexpected ways throughout, avoiding cliched duet formats.

This thread is particularly perfect given the nebulous status/release dates of Pts. 2 and/or 3 of New Amerykah. I desperately need more stoned afrofuturist science-funktion in my life.

Need to give LIAB a few more spins before I can comment on more than the first impression of WOW.

Naw, I should be the one apologizing. Sorry I was such a dick. And yeah, the Saadiq album is kinda pretentious in it's own way, but the emphasis I wanted is more on the out-thereness and experimentalism. (I might be undermining that with my pimping for Foreign Exchange, but they at least have a v. modern sound and run in these circles.) I just kinda had a "oh no!" moment because slavish retro-soul is pretty much 180 degrees away from what I wanted this this thread to be about. (Btw, how is Olesi?)

haha I am almost afraid to start seeking out the stuff on this thread I don't already know (i.e. most of it) simply because I'm trying to ease into '09 rather than keep digging into '08, but when I like this kind of stuff I like it a lot. thanks for starting it Rev! I'm looking fwd to seeing how it develops.

what ive heard of the new ppp album is (not great) retro 60s soul. was never crazy about them in the first place but theyve done quite a turn around.

some of my favourite experimental R&B stuff from the past year or 2 are the tiombe lockheart tracks on the wajeed war album. really incredible. better than georgia anne any day ;)

Just checked out this album and ^o^. It strikes me as an album that will take a while to unpack. "Elliptical" is my initial favorite.

I regret waiting so long to check it. It's my favorite song at the moment.

Another thing I love about the Foreign Exchange album: It totally captures that Aaliyah-style future-classy vibe.

I can't find it to post here, but Tiombe Lockhart and Bilal's duet "Strange" is very much worth checking out. It's built very minimally, mostly around a simple, unvarying string bass loop, and features Lockhart and Bilal, using phrasing that signifies jazz moreso than soul, completing each other's thoughts until they finally come together for the chorus. It is tremendously sweet.
