A perusal of Bukowski's original mss shows that the line in question went through a number of revisions before he settled on the final reading. Sifting down through at least half a dozen layers of scribbles and cross-outs reveals that the first version read:

"I fell off my stool. God was down there, too. Fuck me, I'm drunk."
