There are actually some really good tracks on the Magnetic Man album but only when they pretty much abandon dubstep altogether.

Post Magnetic Man a lot of the poppy stuff sounds surprisingly perky. Brastep?

have to say, listening to max martin eurorave beats in the woods of massachusetts a couple weeks ago at a miranda cosgrove show was kinda inspiring. so, in theory, ancient lumpenprole rave sounds can work for me. heck, i love the new britney album. but most of this neu-dubstep is just as boring as most regular dubstep to me.

would totally go to a local moombahton night around here if there was one. there will never be one.

If I listen to the SBTRKT and Nero albums am I going to hate myself and feel slightly soiled afterwards?

Around 2004-05 I was arguing that indie bands should embrace other styles of music and take production cues from house, techno and R&B and that's probably the single worst call I have ever made.

We pretty much already did that from 2003-2006 except some arseholes took advantage of the lull to sneak dubstep through.

Love the synths on "I Need Air" but will never get how people could find that trademark Benga exhausted trudge beat anything other than wearisome.

Tempted to say it's one of the worst sonic memes in dance music of the past few years.

well you only have to worry about hitting the simple bum/bum/THWACK and then you can throw all type of flair around the synths and vocals, so it's actually super-fun and easy in that regard

The trudge is much less obvious in that "Dub Me Crazy" tune I posted above which means I could see how what you're saying actually works (even though otherwise "I Need Air" is the better tune). There's something about Benga and people who copy him though which I find really dispiriting groove-wise.

I think the mixed 4/4 + 2/4 groove can be achieved in a non-callous way, it's just a lot of producers don't make it interesting

i can totally understand why you prefer "dub me crazy" tim but i honestly don't like dancing to r&b as much as dance music ... part of me just gets lost/bored without kick drums

yeah i'm still reconciling my househead roots with not really caring about house anymore

with disco/rave you're actively trying to get to that trance-state, whereas in rap/r&b you're trying to hook up

personally i've always been a) in steady relationships and b) into "doing drugs" instead of drinking so it's been disco/rave for me all the way

See it's not the 4x4 in these tunes that bugs me but the way it's overlaid with the halfstep beat so that each cancels out the other's nuance.

I don't think it would occur to me to get "over" a 4X4 beat much more than it would occur to me to get over 4/4 time signatures - there is always sufficient variation possible within that framework. But the post-Benga sound really wants to make a virtue of not trying most of the time.

And I really liked a few early examples of this kind of beat, like Quest's "The Seafront".
