There are actually some really good tracks on the Magnetic Man album but only when they pretty much abandon dubstep altogether.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 15:25 (twelve years ago) link

Post Magnetic Man a lot of the poppy stuff sounds surprisingly perky. Brastep?

have to say, listening to max martin eurorave beats in the woods of massachusetts a couple weeks ago at a miranda cosgrove show was kinda inspiring. so, in theory, ancient lumpenprole rave sounds can work for me. heck, i love the new britney album. but most of this neu-dubstep is just as boring as most regular dubstep to me.

If I listen to the SBTRKT and Nero albums am I going to hate myself and feel slightly soiled afterwards?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 15:35 (twelve years ago) link

there is a curious subset of punk-kids-that-into-dance-music-now that eat this up

There's like an entire genre of youtube video discussing brostep vs. dubstep.

i don't know, people everywhere seem to be jumping at the chance to get in on it. coincidentally where at?

fauxmarc, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:13 (twelve years ago) link

i feel like this is revenge on all of us who were bitching circa 2003/2004 that dubstep needed to be "more pop."

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:15 (twelve years ago) link

either that or revenge on me bitching ca. 1999 to anyone who would listen that 2-step needed to be "more electro"

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:17 (twelve years ago) link

Haha we all get the music we deserve.

Tim F, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:17 (twelve years ago) link

Around 2004-05 I was arguing that indie bands should embrace other styles of music and take production cues from house, techno and R&B and that's probably the single worst call I have ever made.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:19 (twelve years ago) link

lol @ Brastep

I think this also belongs on this thread, as I think it's perhaps the "best" pop/autotune/diva/brostep/brastep jam I've heard:

i think maybe the united kingdom should just take a break from dance music for a couple of years. take a bank holiday to brighton. soak up the soggy rays. read a good book.

scott seward, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:23 (twelve years ago) link

We pretty much already did that from 2003-2006 except some arseholes took advantage of the lull to sneak dubstep through.

nothing sadder than when i get a big box of records in at the store and its full of completely unloveable downtempo acid jazz illbient jungle garage dubtronica. ugh.

It's really enjoyable MOR electronic music!

mh, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:42 (twelve years ago) link

The Magnetic Man stuff, that is. Most brostep still horrible

mh, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:42 (twelve years ago) link

it's also ridiculously fun to dance to, as you can tell from the video

...rest of the song sounds like generic auto-tuned dancepop circa 2011.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

Love the synths on "I Need Air" but will never get how people could find that trademark Benga exhausted trudge beat anything other than wearisome.

Tim F, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:51 (twelve years ago) link

Tempted to say it's one of the worst sonic memes in dance music of the past few years.

Tim F, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:53 (twelve years ago) link

well you only have to worry about hitting the simple bum/bum/THWACK and then you can throw all type of flair around the synths and vocals, so it's actually super-fun and easy in that regard

does that make sense?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:56 (twelve years ago) link

obviously if you remove the synths and vocals then it's boring as shit to dance to

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

Oh it makes sense but don't you find the rhythm actually sucks the enjoyment out quite a bit?

The trudge is much less obvious in that "Dub Me Crazy" tune I posted above which means I could see how what you're saying actually works (even though otherwise "I Need Air" is the better tune). There's something about Benga and people who copy him though which I find really dispiriting groove-wise.

Tim F, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:59 (twelve years ago) link

I think the mixed 4/4 + 2/4 groove can be achieved in a non-callous way, it's just a lot of producers don't make it interesting

scott seward, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:14 (twelve years ago) link

i can totally understand why you prefer "dub me crazy" tim but i honestly don't like dancing to r&b as much as dance music ... part of me just gets lost/bored without kick drums

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:15 (twelve years ago) link

les twins do the best job possible of making brostep seem awesome:

part of me just gets lost/bored without kick drums

personally i prefer dancing to stuff that has a little more space in the beat, too much four on the floor and i start to feel like a marionette

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:18 (twelve years ago) link

xxpost I'd prefer a good house tune to either really but that's obv.

Tim F, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:19 (twelve years ago) link

too much four on the floor and i start to feel like a marionette

i think that really sums up the break between disco/rave and rap/r&b

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

too much four on the floor and i start to feel like a marionette

yeah i'm still reconciling my househead roots with not really caring about house anymore

fauxmarc, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:21 (twelve years ago) link

with disco/rave you're actively trying to get to that trance-state, whereas in rap/r&b you're trying to hook up

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:22 (twelve years ago) link

personally i've always been a) in steady relationships and b) into "doing drugs" instead of drinking so it's been disco/rave for me all the way

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:23 (twelve years ago) link

See it's not the 4x4 in these tunes that bugs me but the way it's overlaid with the halfstep beat so that each cancels out the other's nuance.

I don't think it would occur to me to get "over" a 4X4 beat much more than it would occur to me to get over 4/4 time signatures - there is always sufficient variation possible within that framework. But the post-Benga sound really wants to make a virtue of not trying most of the time.

And I really liked a few early examples of this kind of beat, like Quest's "The Seafront".
