I've gotr the beginning of my way running through my head as 'and in the end' but I'm not sure that's the start.

you're possibly right, and i certainly prefer your version as a opening line. i wasn't really sure so checked with some dodgy lyrics website. 'with her gone' does fit in with the whole theme of the woman 'stealing away' etc though. in conclusion, i'm still none the wiser
