Who's There: didn't actually make me worry about aliens, classic nevertheless
Diggin' Your Scene: I guess it's about liking a girl
I Just Wanna See: my fuckin' pseudo-existentialist 6th grade jam right here
Waste: always skipped this, I think it's about not liking a girl anymore
AllStar: got the DJ to give me a microphone so I could sing this at at least 3 bar mitzvahs SERIOUSLY
Satellite: tango-like, skipped this a lot, I think it's about liking a girl
Radio: much better than "Radio #2" by the Ataris in retrospect
Stoned: didn't really know what being stoned was in 1999, still have never been stoned, not really my jam
Then The Morning Comes: highlight of NOW 4, no strong feelings about this one though
Road Man: fucking hilarious because like it's a reggae song or something about a roadie who drives real fast
Fallen Horses: skip
Defeat You: I am not super competitive, interesting rhetorical coutnerpoint to "I Just Wanna See"
Come On Come On: I think this song is about someone having a cock and balls sharpied on their forehead, was a gap commercial
Home: kinda downtempo and weird, not sure why this exists
Can't Get Enough Of You Baby: a cover, may not have been in any Shrek movies

Creative Writing Assignment

Imagine your ideal "Astro Lounge." Describe the experience of stepping in to this environment for the first time. What would be your initial impressions? What sorts of sounds, smells, or tastes might you find in the Astro Lounge? What sorts of qualities would you anticipate the astro-air possessing? Suppose you encounter lead singer Steve Harwell within your Astro Lounge. What would the two of you discuss? Be as complete and detailed as possible with your answers.

i bought this album back when it was out. that was only because i couldn't find the "all star" single, which i now hate. i can't remember a single other track from it other than "then the morning comes", so i guess it wins

this morning i had a moment where i contemplated some post connecting Smashmouth's cover of "Can't Get Enough Of You Baby" to the fact that around the same time singer Steve Harwell's 6 month old son died of leukemia, and fell into a deep pit of self-loathing. this is why we need Passantino around, to say the awful things for us.

Always liked smash mouth's guitar sound

How much money have these guys made off this seemingly one-hit wonder of an album? These guys' great grandchildren probably will never have to work a day in their lives.

on disc, I've liked a few tracks, even if the vocalist sounds like he should be on an animated cartoon

When I saw them open for U2 on the Pop Mart tour, Larry Mullen came out during "Walking on the Sun" and shit in the lead singer's mouth.

ten years pass...

The @smashmouth singer used to live across the street from me. Someone sent me this screenshot from a recent smash mouth concert asking "is this your neighbor"? NO. Who the heck is this Shrek imposter? And why am I intrigued? pic.twitter.com/ct9GLEGyhV

The first album my parents ever bought me. I LOVED "All Star" back in first grade.

Lone Wanderer Mark II, Tuesday, 5 October 2021 01:53 (two years ago) link

That "Diggin' Your Scene" isn't a Blow Monkeys cover, is it? `Cos that would be something.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 5 October 2021 14:17 (two years ago) link

my parents bought me two albums for my 12th birthday, this and neon ballroom by silverchair. neon ballroom is obviously one million times better, but i am still able to summon "waste" from memory, a lovely power-pop ballad that reminds me of early bnl of all things (a compliment)

production on this record is really great too

I had this “what if” thought years back where I wanted to believe they were actually like Steely Dan in the studio - unbelievably meticulous in achieving this precise Smash Mouth sound.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Tuesday, 5 October 2021 17:17 (two years ago) link

Production on the album is indeed great. I remember thinking, "Hey, what's up with all the sounds going around in my headphones? I LOVE IT!!" when I first heard it on headphones. Oh, the joys of technology...

I really like this band even tho I only know the singles from this album & 'walking on the sun', and even though they're kinda the musical equivalent of an oversized retro/kitsch bowling shirt. Agree with whoever said the guitarist and guitar sounds are fantastic, the production too, the keyboard and organ sounds are also great, can't believe they don't have a real keyboard player.

I wouldn't have touched this with a 10 foot pole in 1999, of course, which is a real shame.

The 25 Best Songs Ever Ranked In Order (Deflatormouse), Monday, 11 October 2021 21:37 (two years ago) link

I always suspected this was a manufactured band, like some A&R rep got them together ("at last, the missing link between Sugar Ray and Fastball!") but watching that clip they really seem more like they started organically as a 2-bit punk band in the drummer's basement.

The 25 Best Songs Ever Ranked In Order (Deflatormouse), Monday, 11 October 2021 21:42 (two years ago) link

I liked Walking on the Sun when it came out and recall a very early web interview where they seemed to have some skate punk roots that they were quite consciously rejecting because they wanted to be big and have a real career and said that could only happen if you played along with the label’s plan.

The video is hilarious and he's clearly wasted, BUT I learned today that he's apparently been battling various addictions since his son died from leukemia at like 6 months old, so the whole thing is just sad.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 12 October 2021 20:29 (two years ago) link

ok so regarding their origins, steve was a big ol drug dealer (might've been just pot) in oc and its not that far of a reach to get your demo to the right people when you're selling large quantities of contraband in so cal. i learned this from the vh1 behind the music iirc.

kurt schwitterz, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 20:30 (two years ago) link

Bummer, I wanted to see em. Would have guessed the guitarist shopped his demo around then teamed with Harwell at the label's suggestion. Maybe I'll hear the album one of these days.

lol the Eve 6 guy has had "PROSPECTIVE LEAD SINGER OF SMASHMOUTH" in his Twitter bio for a few weeks

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 20:38 (two years ago) link

Very depressing. I wish Harwell nothing but the best, alcohol/drug addiction is an uphill battle of the worst kind.
