Psi Com - Psi Com

kkvgz, Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:14 (twelve years ago) link

Some info on Lowell Davidson.

Not only was it his only record as a leader, he never even appeared on other records as a sideman.

shake it, shake it, sugary pee (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:15 (twelve years ago) link

NASA - Insha-Allah! (this one's for you, Ned and jjj)

what about bands that released NO albums lol - the Weirdos, the Screamers, etc

such bands have nothing to do with this poll

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

can I add Wavepool Abortion? their album is coming out soon

CLUB PISCOPO (DJP), Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:22 (twelve years ago) link

I also nominated Never Mind The Bollocks, which if allowed (and I can't see why it wouldn't be, Swindle not being a proper album) will own this poll

ban this sick stunt (anagram), Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:23 (twelve years ago) link

are all you guys being careful to only nominate albums you think totally fucking rule

Refrained from nominating Julian Schnabel's OK Every Silver Lining Has A Cloud.

Randy Holden, Population II

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

I think Modern Lovers s/t should count because only David Robinson was on both albums with Jonathan. They lost two really important members!

I nominate Hexendanz, which I think is awesome even though no one has heard of it out of Alburtis, PA.

bamcquern, Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

NASA - Insha-Allah! (this one's for you, Ned and jjj)

Too kind. But I don't think I ever heard the damn thing all the way through!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

I think Fotheringay should count as well. It should be one album released in the artist's lifetime. That second album is really just some kind of compilation/odds and ends thing.

xp: WAHT

okay that will not do at all

CLUB PISCOPO (DJP), Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

I just remember that "Shah Shah" single...and not fondly. xp

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

I also nominate

Draytons Two - Raw Spouge

So psyched wikipedia has a spouge article now. It is probably the most informative thing on the internet about spouge.

Cannibal Ox, don't think the live album counts

yeah I already made that point

Yes you did. My bad. I should save my posting until the evenings when I don't have to sneak ILX reading/posting in between other chunks of work. :\

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:38 (twelve years ago) link

Erratum:

Unicorns released TWO albums - Who Will Cut Our Hair is the second. I know because I own both of them.

no

this is like nominating the Velvet Underground because Nico was only on the first album

Wild Tchoupitoulas - S/T

This is a great record.

Agree. I'll be voting for this if this ever ends up in a voting stage.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:51 (twelve years ago) link

What about various combos of artists who did one album together? Like Eno & Cale, or Reed & Cale, or the Stills-Young band?

no. the idea is not to get as many names as possible. it's to poll albums by unique artistic entities who never recorded an album again. otherwise there's a trillion jazz combos that were never technically the same thing again, the Byrds probably'd qualify, etc etc.

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:52 (twelve years ago) link

Oh damn xp yr right abt unicrons :(((

my life as liz cho (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:54 (twelve years ago) link

like if you count engineers & sidemen as contributors, which is really a fair proposition to make, you could technically nominate every album ever made for this poll

Christgau:

The Wild Tchoupitoulas [Island, 1976]
Here we have eight songs about dressing up in Indian costume on Mardi Gras; many of them are also about fighting with other Indians. You've probably heard the New Orleans nonsense patois before, and maybe the irresistible melodic elements, too, although I can't tell any more, because I've played this "repetitive" record so many times it sounds like where they all started (which it may be). For a while, I believed side two inferior, but eventually a longing for "Big Chief Got a Golden Crown" set in and now I prefer it for listening. Side one is the best non- (or anti-) disco dance music in years--it had folks who'd never heard it before shouting "Indians here they come" at a thirtieth birthday party. Allen Toussaint produced, the Meters played, and mighty kootie fiyo. A

Good call with the Herion! I was thinking of adding Antioch Arrow to this list, but they released two full-lengths didn't they?

Anyway, Exploding Hearts will probably be forever my best and only answer to this question. I played the album in the car during a drive out to my parents a few weeks ago, forgetting that my wife had never heard the whole thing, and she fell instantly in love with it and we ended up playing it like 6 times in a row.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 11 August 2011 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

Yes, great call with VSS too.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 11 August 2011 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

VSS makes me think of Behead the Prophet NLSL who put out only one album (I am that Great and Fiery Force) but I don't remember it really.
See I saw both bands play the same club...

Trip Maker, Thursday, 11 August 2011 20:07 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, antioch arrow put out two 12 inches. they're only like 20 minutes a piece, but i had to stick to the rule.

suggest anyone into those picks checks out that torches to rome record. not many people seem to know it, but it's one of my fave 90s hardcore records. (ex-fuel guys. the hardcore/emo fuel, not the shitty mod rock fuel.)

would also suggest checking out the worst case scenario record, which is justin from unwound doing really intense touch & go style hardcore, except i can't find a copy of it anygoddamnwhere now.
