there's hardly any rap which seems weird to me so I'm gonna bump the B-side of Queen Mother Rage's Vainglorious Law right now to see if it qualifies as well as I'd remember it - it's like a great lost X-clan album, sonically - fuck I love this record

also I'm asking the mods to auto-ban anybody who votes for the New Radicals

can i get a ruling on Fotheringay then?

Amazon editorial review:

2008 release of the long lost sophomore album from one of the great might-have-beens of British music. They lasted less than a year, and released just one album, but their disappearance robbed the early-'70s scene of a group of musicians capable of taking Folk-Rock to new heights of subtlety and musicianship. Sadly they broke up during the recording sessions for their second album. Incredibly all the tapes survived in various record company archives. 38 years later the surviving members of the group have mixed all the material to finally complete this remarkable album.

are all you guys being careful to only nominate albums you think totally fucking rule instead of just albums that people might possibly vote for because they fit the criterion

Some info on Lowell Davidson.

Not only was it his only record as a leader, he never even appeared on other records as a sideman.

I also nominated Never Mind The Bollocks, which if allowed (and I can't see why it wouldn't be, Swindle not being a proper album) will own this poll

Randy Holden, Population II

I think Modern Lovers s/t should count because only David Robinson was on both albums with Jonathan. They lost two really important members!

I nominate Hexendanz, which I think is awesome even though no one has heard of it out of Alburtis, PA.

Too kind. But I don't think I ever heard the damn thing all the way through!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

I think Fotheringay should count as well. It should be one album released in the artist's lifetime. That second album is really just some kind of compilation/odds and ends thing.

Agree. I'll be voting for this if this ever ends up in a voting stage.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:51 (twelve years ago) link

What about various combos of artists who did one album together? Like Eno & Cale, or Reed & Cale, or the Stills-Young band?

no. the idea is not to get as many names as possible. it's to poll albums by unique artistic entities who never recorded an album again. otherwise there's a trillion jazz combos that were never technically the same thing again, the Byrds probably'd qualify, etc etc.

like if you count engineers & sidemen as contributors, which is really a fair proposition to make, you could technically nominate every album ever made for this poll

Christgau:

The Wild Tchoupitoulas [Island, 1976]
Here we have eight songs about dressing up in Indian costume on Mardi Gras; many of them are also about fighting with other Indians. You've probably heard the New Orleans nonsense patois before, and maybe the irresistible melodic elements, too, although I can't tell any more, because I've played this "repetitive" record so many times it sounds like where they all started (which it may be). For a while, I believed side two inferior, but eventually a longing for "Big Chief Got a Golden Crown" set in and now I prefer it for listening. Side one is the best non- (or anti-) disco dance music in years--it had folks who'd never heard it before shouting "Indians here they come" at a thirtieth birthday party. Allen Toussaint produced, the Meters played, and mighty kootie fiyo. A
