Deadmau5 - Someone explain this guy's huge popularity (general C/D, RFI thread i guess)

yeah this doesn't really strike me as any different from s&d and oakenfold and tiesto getting huge here in america for a half-second around 1999/2000. he's just got a good and very 2011 visual branding gimmick. the big difference, i guess, is that as usual it's just got to be a lot easier for kids to hear this stuff and pass it around with youtube and whatever than it was back then, when not even MTV was really touching this stuff. The final night of competition for this season's So You Think You Can Dance aired last night. It has been a good season, but last night's show was disappointing; the final four dancers were overworked, and a lot of the choreography was uninspired. Still, one of the highlights was a number choreographed by Sonya Tayeh to an aggressive, dubsteppy Deadmau5 track, "Raise Your Weapon".

i guess this is sarcastic but i honestly don't know what the word "prog" means in relation to dance music. is that on some idm bedroom techno tip? i meant like actual dance music that people dance to.

maybe i should break it down for you. a lot of "hip kids" in certain high schools (maybe the sort where kids can afford to go to coachella), and when i say hip kids, i mean the sort of kids who are into screamo and go to shows are really into "dubstep". and i put it in quotes because it's a particularly abrasive variant of the sound. this is a bit of history repeating, as i can recall post-college, lots of kids who were into metal or industrial or post-hardcore were also into really tough, angry "drum and bass". on the other hand, a lot of kids in high school, and these might be your more "popular" kids, they are just into whatever mershy dance music is on the billboard chart. in a lot of ways, deadmau5 meets the two in the middle.

cool beats tips: don't be danceable

so like, hip kids like deadmau5 because it sounds like their hip dubstep music, and popular kids like deadmau5 because it sounds like the popular music of the billboard charts, and everyone wants to be hip and/or popular, so everyone listens to deadmau5.
