no duh rev but you know i'm partially right darn it

Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 21 December 2008 05:32 (fifteen years ago) link

it's easy to keep going back in time on this, the black avant-garde did not even start with sly stone as you know but a lot of this stuff sounds like dubbed-out remixes of there's a riot goin' on

Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 21 December 2008 05:37 (fifteen years ago) link

I was more talking in regards to the start of this current scene (as I'm sure you were) but lets not get lost in these sort of arguments. Please.

Oh, and why do I have to be the big booster for the Foreign Exchange album?

"Daykeeper"

cover of Stevie Wonder's "If She Breaks Your Heart" (my current last.fm count: 43)

I meant to ask about Kissey Asplund, I heard something or other by her and liked it.

Non-rap Bangladesh:

Kelis - "Bossy," "Aww Shit"
Beyonce - "Diva"
Ciara - "Hotline"
M.I.A. - "Hit That"

Shawnna's "RPM" (obv. rap, though) never got enough attention.

"Sa-Ra ft. Rozzi Daime - So Special"

this track is like something from 1992.

Some other releases, not yet specifically cited, for which I will rep:

Pattie Blingh & the Akebulan 5 - Sagala (GA Muldrow plus a little Declaime/Perkins; later Samiyam mix of "To: Re" is also pretty much messed up)

Dabrye's off-center R&B'ish remix of King Midas Sound's "One Ting"

Steve Spacek's pair of solo 12" for Jazzy Sport

Rahsaan Patterson - "Pitch Black," with the Cure bassline and bubbling tarpit FX:

Not even her bling47 entry:

This thread is an example of why I stay on ILM

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 21 December 2008 20:57 (fifteen years ago) link

i thought it sounded like chante moore...

im reinvestigating this last van hunt album. more of a new wave influence on it but it just seems so derivative. some nice touches here and there but barring a few tracks on each album where it all comes together, he still seems to have absolutely no certain identity of his own.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Sunday, 21 December 2008 21:19 (fifteen years ago) link

he sings too tepidly too. argh. i just want to slap him.

Anyone know a good place to get mixtapes (err, CDs) of this stuff? The bling47 website isn't selling any at the moment...

i love janelle monae but she only has one KO song so far - smile. if anyone could take this stuff mainstream, its her... but ive a feeling this stuff will stay underground with the gilles/benji b listeners and straight no chaser/shook readers.

Off topic I know but woah Andy "R.P.M" is amazing.

Will check out a lot of the stuff in this thread. I like that first Foreign Exchange youtube vid.

Tim F, Monday, 22 December 2008 00:25 (fifteen years ago) link

I know we're doing our best to steer clear of boundaries here, but I think Foreign Exchange is more of a Darien Brockington/Eric Roberson/Dwele thing.

DJ Spinna's neo-soul efforts probably too.

also i dont think it works the same way in the u.s. as it does in the u.k. as far as 'underground-mainstream'

theres a really niche-but-large slow jamz audience out there that some of these artists can easily get slotted into

Hmm now I'm curious. Thom Jurek's AMG review makes it sound like the greatest album ever made but so many of his reviews do that (esp. for long term female singers making tough, uncompromising, experimental albums 10+ years after their commercial peaks).

Maybe you don’t always have to do something “new,” but there’s something missing from the Black Grapefruit song that keeps me from being wowed.
