i think what makes the scene is lewis' pause after larry asks "do you say bin laden or ben laden" because there's a tense moment there where you don't know if he's going to go off on larry for being a dick or start riffing on the bin laden thing, and then he spins off a great yarn

J0rdan S., Monday, 8 August 2011 21:36 (twelve years ago) link

He can't decide himself! He wants to stay pissed off but he has that 'competitive comedian' instinct too.

I think it'd be a great scene even if you cut it off before that, just for the few seconds in which they pause to consider 'Is life too short? It's too short, isn't it?'

rewatched the season tonight.

i think the palestinian chicken episode is top 5 all time. incredible.

i realised i much prefer the episodes that are larry and his friends shooting the shit to the ones that are him getting in (difficult to watch) awkward situations with strangers/new characters. and this episode was pretty much all that.

Letterman was always best with Super Dave. Charles Grodin was good at the same routine....

Kinda think that Larry and Jeff eating Oscar's last meal warranted a much bigger bollocking from Susie - had been looking forward to that all episode. Didn't even get a proper "you fat fuck!"

Was this week's good? Haven't watched it yet.

boxall, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 03:22 (twelve years ago) link

Good enough, but not one of the better ones.

nickn, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 04:02 (twelve years ago) link

That one was a bit rubbish, apart from some great Larry/Suzie stuff.

Gervais (not) bringing the lols as usual.

It still felt very much like a California episode

I'm not screaming "Where were the rats?!?!?!" but still. That was one clean subway station.

Haven't seen the new one but I'm a bit disappointed that Leon and Funkhouser don't appear to be going to New York with them.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 14:45 (twelve years ago) link

leon was in the preview for next week making himself at home in larry's apartment

leon and jeff around the one minute mark

Serial Chiller (sunny successor), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 15:08 (twelve years ago) link

This has made me happy. Also being in New York surely has potential to give Susie some family members, which could be both hilarious and horrific.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 15:10 (twelve years ago) link

michael j fox is apparently the season finale

wonder where they're going with that...

caek, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 15:16 (twelve years ago) link

Oh god, really? (NB it is basically Rule Number One of Curb that everyone with a disability must be a raging belligerent arsehole).

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 15:20 (twelve years ago) link

i love michael j fox. stoked for that episode tbh. it is called "Larry vs. Michael J. Fox".

caek, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 15:22 (twelve years ago) link

there was a good michael j. fox bit in the season preview trailer, but i won't spoiler it for everyone.

sofatruck, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 19:26 (twelve years ago) link

This week's was disappointing, kind of cringe-y but not in the good way. Leon was good though - screaming as soon as he walked into the apartment, eating a croissant filled with champagne.

boxall, Thursday, 25 August 2011 01:59 (twelve years ago) link

It is wrong for this show to be in New York. We don't need more shows set in New York!!!

Pizzataco Five (admrl), Thursday, 25 August 2011 02:02 (twelve years ago) link

we don't really need more set in and around LA, either, to be fair.

Clay, Thursday, 25 August 2011 02:03 (twelve years ago) link

oh yes we do

Pizzataco Five (admrl), Thursday, 25 August 2011 02:04 (twelve years ago) link

Next season he should move to Bournemouth.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Thursday, 25 August 2011 02:36 (twelve years ago) link

I was thinking about Bournemouth recently

I really liked this episode for how committed all the debates were.

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 25 August 2011 07:19 (twelve years ago) link

kinda perfunctory... "shit bow" is an instant classic phrase tho

shit bow & leon are my takeaways from this episode

shitbow my fav ep so far this season. i love when larry says he wishes he had a daughter so he could impart leon's advice to her

I'm getting tired of the new gf every episode, they're rarely funny.

boxall, Thursday, 25 August 2011 22:55 (twelve years ago) link

The two New York episodes have been the worst this season IMO.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Friday, 26 August 2011 23:28 (twelve years ago) link

Not sure what you guys are on about, the last episode was classic. Larry David even brings the funny out of Rosie O'Donnell.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 27 August 2011 13:46 (twelve years ago) link

This week's was genuinely the worst episode ever, with the exception of Larry and Jeff in the periscope car, everything fell flat. Such a waste of Wanda as well.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

Ah, I kind of liked the one-armed man running gag. But yeah, it wasn't the best. Back to LA, Larry.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

For real - the season has dropped off since moving to New York. There was so much comic potential in Larry, Richard, Jeff, Funkhouser and Leon broing down together that's fallen by the wayside. Loved "shit bow" though.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:11 (twelve years ago) link

Sort of thinking the series is suffering from a lack of a really good straight man as well, and there aren't many straight men who are as good as Cheryl.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:12 (twelve years ago) link

otm matt

caek, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:41 (twelve years ago) link

But the series has basically traded Cheryl for Leon + Funkhouser. I'll take that deal any day.

The last NYC episode was OK, the previous two were great. The Viagra episode was an all-time classic. Maybe one has to be a baseball fan.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 15:06 (twelve years ago) link

funkhauser isn't in nyc though : ( and leon was in the last 2 seasons.

caek, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:00 (twelve years ago) link

And neither of those are straight men. And both of them were in it at the same time as Cheryl.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:02 (twelve years ago) link

I meant that the loss of Cheryl has led to a gain in Funkhouser + Leon, roughly in terms of airtime, not the types of characters they play (e.g. the straight man). I like that they've broken away from the old formula. Instead of Larry being grounded somewhat by being with Cheryl, now he's surrounded only with people who act as ridiculously as he does.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

The car periscope episode reminded me of those later season Seinfelds that David didn't write, which relied on Newman or George or someone diving into the camera and Kramer coming up with some wacky invention. But those cliches feel like old vaudevillian or silent film-era comedy gags. The episode was formulaic, but Larry David and Jeff having fun with the periscope and a few other scenes made up for it. I think a weak Curb episode still rates better than most other shows.
