idk thats pretty convincing but im not sure "the past is perfectly ours" i think the fraught knowability/unknowability of the past is central to how i grasp this whole thing. like the pieces are there but you can never put them back together again.

yeah i think your right i was p drunk when i wrote this, not that i dont stand behind the central idea but its not totally coherent... there are tensions i guess btw the past as lost eden and the past as slave to the present, thats part of whats driving the music really

man vondelpark is p great - really into 'california analog dream' its kinda like a mid 00s indie rock song stretched taut and irradiated

Lamp, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 06:26 (twelve years ago) link

i dont where else to post about this but ken seeno's tape on nna 'invisible surfer on an invisible wave' is so fucking great just these incredible expanses of synth and space but firmly rooted in the 'natural'. i guess it probably belongs on the knew age thread but i like this thread better and knew agers are just chillwavers in the morning anyway

wet wings - feeeel it

first track off a superlimited tape on atelier ciseaux this kinda feels like a skeleton take on pastoral moanwave but then the drums come in halfway through and it starts to hit harder and the girls voice sounds like wind in the grass

melted toys - lost connection

probably not the best song on their ep but i like how much of a pastiche this particular song is the heaviness of the affections make it seem kinda rootless a bristol board collage of montone dreampop and euro influences

this evening i was djing a party where they wanted '90s classics' and it was both disconcerting and unremarkable to see ppl barely out of their teens dancing along to mid-90s house classix; there was little to no divide btw the people who might be old enough to remember the songs i was playing fondly & the people for whom these songs should have little personal/historical meaning... isnt one of the consequences of technology to help divorce cultural artifacts from history?

That's it right there. Good music is good music. Young people aren't supposed to be able to recognize and enjoy good music? The whole cult of the new, and the obsession with timeliness is imo, a strange type of insanity promoted by journalists who are taught to think only about the news.

that cough cool is great

cough cool suffer from putting out too much stuff - their best tracks are really good, but they've released quite a bit of junk too. tbf most of the junk was free.

last year's Eleventeen Eston album is really nice

brimstead, Friday, 9 January 2015 05:55 (nine years ago) link

treeship, i don't know, i didn't get a chillwave vibe from that gypsy and the cat tune, apart from the treatment of the vocals maaaaybe, just seemed to have that same peter hook new order sound that is like the main fucking hallmark of most generic indie pop/rock imo

marcos, Friday, 9 January 2015 16:28 (nine years ago) link

i always thought g&tc were on some anodyne washed-out new order/fleetwood mac thing but i've only ever heard them in the dentists office

don't ask me why i posted this (electricsound), Friday, 9 January 2015 21:40 (nine years ago) link

yeah, i think "anodyne washed-out new order/fleetwood mac" is a good description for most mass market chillwave. there were a few great chillwave acts but there was also a flood of generic "chill" acts -- both synth and guitar-oriented -- and i think those are also part of the movement. i heard this g&tc song for the first time at shake shack.

ha i didn't realize that the beach boys' "all i wanna do" is considered proto-chillwave.

Always thought this was proto-chillwave too. "Magic" by Mick Smiley, from the original Ghostbusters movie.

that beach boys thing really is kinda amazing. i haven't listened to that album for years.

scott seward, Saturday, 4 April 2015 15:46 (nine years ago) link

it sounds like a new cass mccombs single! i mean even that hazy production is so perfect.

scott seward, Saturday, 4 April 2015 16:03 (nine years ago) link

I've often thought of Feel Flows as also being Proto-Chillwave, but it might be closer to Proto-Hypangogic Pop.

Meanwhile, on Wikipedia...

idgaf about the rest of his output but those two washed out tunes "a new theory" and "feel it all around" from a few years ago are prtty good imo
