I hear Dillinja still likes the music he puts out

LOL he would! what a clown.

I don't read no dissensus!
Well I have, but not on the regular.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Friday, 13 October 2006 21:59 (seventeen years ago) link

i.e. it's shit.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Friday, 13 October 2006 22:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha to be fair to Lex what else is there in the UK?

The other two are pretty silly, but that's pretty much par for the course on any music review anywhere. Most journo's don't try to make stuff they like sound boring.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 13 October 2006 22:00 (seventeen years ago) link

If you're in a hurry writing copy it's easier to be hyperbolic than to offer guarded praise.

I have this notion that DJ Clever's mix will be great, better probably than all the other dubstep mixes I have. This based on the fact that what Clever cherrypicks from drum & bass is pretty much exactly the same sort of stuff (once you slow it down a bit) that DJs should be cherrypicking from dubstep. That he includes "Qawwali" is a tentative empirical confirmation (yeah, I know, it's kind of an obvious inclusion at this point, and no way is "Punisher" nearly as good no matter what wack people say).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 13 October 2006 23:04 (seventeen years ago) link

i.e. it's shit

the pretension at dissensus can be choking but they do mention good tracks that don't get highlighted here.

jergins (jergins), Friday, 13 October 2006 23:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, there are many things to commend it for. It doesn't have threads about how shit NME/Guardian is, or "best songs with the sound of someone giving the trombonist directions in it" and has a lot more discussion of dubstep. But I think there's a higher unreadable to readable ratio.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Friday, 13 October 2006 23:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Some of the swill I read on Dissensus while ILM was down:

By minimal though, are you meaning dubstep ?

ardkore>>jungle>>drum n bass>>nu skool breaks>>breakstep>>dubstep ??

Those were both by the same guy. I'd call him the Geir of breaks.

But I suppose it was worth it to read this from Blackdown:

a big name minimal artist has the parts to at least two different dubstep artists' tracks...

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 09:21 (seventeen years ago) link

The guy I believe you are referring to is an industrial strength irritant who has been banned from various boards (incl Dissensus, but they let him on with a different handle- why?) On the Dubstepforum he constantly promoted his own dire tunes even after the point where people immediately told him to fuck off. Actually the key thing ILM has over Dissensus is humour.

@Tim Finney--- yes, there is no way Punisher could be thought of as even a quarter as good as Qawalli, (tho the VIP mix had some tastily engineered percussion in a minimal house stylee). Allegedly Pinch has moved away from Qawalli's sound now, which is really pretty unfortunate.

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 18:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I didn't even like the VIP that much :-(

I think maybe that whole masculine robot sharpness thing which defines so much dubstep (and which define both "Punisher" and the VIP against "Qawwali") is perhaps a very minor turn-off for me, it's quite astonishing how much I love "Qawwali" above and beyond all dubstep going right back to, like, mid-2002.

The Shackleton track that begins the Cassy mix (and is the best thing on there apart from the DJ Abstract track, can you believe this is me saying that??) is in a vaguely similar style, perhaps I should check out more Shackleton...?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 04:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Just wanted to Big Up a well done mix by Vaccine.

You can find it at the forum

Vaccine's track to start off the mix is quite good.

And Tim, I take it back, I'm not sure if you'll like Shackleton's other stuff really, its got a kind of sterility to it.

Clean, precise, experimental definitely.

Some of its really, really good though.

Siah Alan (Siah Alan), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 04:24 (seventeen years ago) link

it's definitely worth checking out the full version of Blood On My Hands, and its flip 'Hypno Angel'. Skull Disco 3 is probably my favourite dubstep record, alongside Qawwali and Toasty Boy's Splash (check this one track out, honestly. not into his other stuff but this is great). none of Shackleton's stuff is anywhere near as warm as 'Blood' but it's all good.

a (rslvd), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 06:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I changed the thread title as it had been grating on me also for a while now.

"Allegedly Pinch has moved away from Qawalli's sound now, which is really pretty unfortunate.

-- gekoppel (inabeautifulplaceinthecountr...), October 17th, 2006."

there's a new one by Pinch called 'One Blood' that sugests this isn't quite true.

martin (martin), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:39 (seventeen years ago) link

dubstep allstars 4 is surprisingly different from number 1 (i don't have the intermediary volumes). i'm kinda new to this music - what's witht he big stylistic change?

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 19 October 2006 22:48 (seventeen years ago) link

just evolution i guess. a newish genre finding its feet (or losing its edge?)

(vol 2 is my favourite by some distance fwiw. also, check out the garage pressure podcasts (garagepressure.com).)

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Friday, 20 October 2006 07:55 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm starting to think that I might have been sleeping on dubstep too long, having hardly listened to any (except 'Midnight Request Line') in the last 4 years. Anyway, I'm completely addicted to the DJ Clever mix, esp 'Qawwali' - what else should I be listening to? I wasn't really into the Burial or Skream albums, but if there are any mixes/tracks/albums more like 'Qawwali' I need them...

there's a cd length shackleton mix on the skull disco website that i listened to on the way home last night. never knowingly heard him before but he's now been added to my mental list of names to look out for. thanks for that mr supasupadupadupafly.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Saturday, 21 October 2006 10:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Man, Hamas Rule is just so weird!

I'd recommend it to people but I'm not sure that I even get it myself.

Siah Alan (Siah Alan), Saturday, 21 October 2006 23:58 (seventeen years ago) link

someone posted a tracklist for that Shackleton mix over at dissensus that's not on the Skull Disco website

Shackleton - Mixed By DubSTa
01.Stalker
02.Fumes
03.Out of order
04.Qwack (Spell Shackleton remix)
05.In the next world
06.NDoki
07.Eat my word
08.Majestic visions
09.Make me cry
10.New dawn
11.Tala rasa
12.Blood in my hand
13.I want to eat you
14.Tin fail sky
15.Massacre
16.Language of the beast
17.Naked
18.Limb by limb

I'd grabbed something from there a while back, but I don't think this was it! It's really, really good this btw. And despite my enthusiasm for a lot of tunes here & there I haven't found a lot of longer dubstep-ish mixes impressing me much at all on a home/headphone listen. This one is definitely the more Qawwali-like end of things, maybe even a bit more interesting to my ears so far.

dubstep allstars vol 2, still the best.

i liked the freely downloadable 74min shackleton mix from here: http://www.skulldisco.com/tunes.html

DAH! M.A.H. has ruined Dubstep for me now! I HATE HER! I HATE HATE HATE HER! WHY DOES SHE HAVE TO GUSH ABOUT EVERYTHING IN THAT INSIPID SHIT-EATING WAY ALL THE FUCKIGN TIME!?!

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 6 November 2006 14:01 (seventeen years ago) link

mind you, I like all the reggae-hop stuff from about 72:40 onwards on that mix chap posted - can anyone identify and recommend stuff like that?

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 6 November 2006 14:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I feel ya, DL, all that nonsense about DUBSTEP WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE is grating in the extreme. I've just ben skipping past the first few minutes of each mix.

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Monday, 6 November 2006 15:02 (seventeen years ago) link

she does it with EVERYTHING she plays though. I think one of my first ever ILM posts was back in 2000 when I was complaining about her creaming herself over a Boards of Canada exclusive she'd got her grubby little mitts on. "Wasn't that just MAGICAL! We'll have to get them in for a session!". Another time I heard her play something that she described as "A repetitive beat... BUT A WONDERFUL ONE AT THAT!". That's the difference between her and her hero John Peel - John never bothered telling you to like what he was playing, he just did.

On this mix MAH sounds like she's being handed little slips of paper written by the staff at Q magazine. I keep expecting her to interrupt a mix with "Wonderful - The Guardian *****".

"Daring, intense and brilliant" - I Love Music

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Monday, 6 November 2006 15:11 (seventeen years ago) link

the worst thing about it is she actually plays quite good music a lot of the time, hence ruining it all for me.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 6 November 2006 15:18 (seventeen years ago) link

gosh, pass the hatorade.

new new wave of new wave new rave (fandango), Monday, 6 November 2006 15:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Can we at least give her the credit of being some months ahead of Q magazine AND the Guardian, if not the ILM massive here?

the worst thing about it is she actually plays quite good music a lot of the time

yeah what a terrible thing, imagine if she was this enthusiastic about SHIT music i.e. Zane Lowe :-P

new new wave of new wave new rave (fandango), Monday, 6 November 2006 15:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I've aquired a few good mixes from Breezeblock without any talking on them. A pretty smart Adam Freeland one from 2001 or so, for example.

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Monday, 6 November 2006 15:33 (seventeen years ago) link

shes still more bearable than gilles peterson.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 6 November 2006 15:34 (seventeen years ago) link

amen fandango, but then there's nothing to spoil with Zane's music.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 6 November 2006 15:35 (seventeen years ago) link

you can always buy the CD! ;)

new new wave of new wave new rave (fandango), Monday, 6 November 2006 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I hate her voice. I have a friend who says she's his dream woman. I don't see it. Bit too enthusiastic for me, and I dislike the breezeblock because it's usually pretty boring peppered with some decent tracks.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Monday, 6 November 2006 15:37 (seventeen years ago) link

no one's told me what the ska-ish stuff on that mix is yet. I like it a lot.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 6 November 2006 15:38 (seventeen years ago) link

there's a tracklist on the site (albeit one full of 'untitled's)

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Monday, 6 November 2006 16:08 (seventeen years ago) link

72:40 is midnight request line, but not the usual mix. this would put it in the middle of the hatcha segment:

...
Skream - 'Request Line' Remix (white)
Benga - The Blues (Benga Beats)
Benga - Zombie Jig (Benga Beats)
Skream - Dutch Flowerz (Tempa)
Digital Mystikz - 'Ancient Memories' Skream remix (DMZ)
...

The Blues and Zombie Jig is on this (samples here too)
http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc/servlet/Info?Track=BENGABEATS1

Dutch Flowerz is on the skream lp and a single.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Monday, 6 November 2006 16:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I got that Tectonic Plates 2CD set in the mail the other day. It's not bad, but it's not exactly world-alteringly brilliant either.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 6 November 2006 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link

so, do people dance to dubstep? how does one dance to dubstep? i was listening to some skull disco stuff in the car today and picturing people doing the dances from the "beat it" video, like slow-motion knife-fighting and moonwalking on rollerskates. is this right? or is it just music to go out to a club and smoke pot to and drink beer in the corner of the room?
