Temporary hijack. I don't think Erykah would mind (seriously beautiful video):

I'm in love with Nuclear Evolution. I'm as of yet just intrigued by Shafiq En' A-Free-Ka.

GQ: What's next thing for you?
Erykah Badu: I'm recording an album right now, with [experimental music producer] Flying Lotus. I'm touring. But things are slowing down now 'cause my children are in school again. [Badu has three children: a son with Andre 3000; a daughter with rapper the D.O.C.; and a daughter with rapper Jay Electronica.] This is the time of year when we all nest in our little home in Dallas and cook breakfast and all those things we been doin' on tour, just in one place. I'm kind of a recluse when it comes to going outside.

GQ: How did you and Flying Lotus hook up?
Erykah Badu: We were talking to each other on MySpace years ago when MySpace was a thing. Social networking was how we hooked up. I told him I'd be in L.A. and he came over to Steve Wilson's house—Stevie is a psychedelic guitar player, a great musician. If both of our worlds can meet and we feel good about it, it's going to be something dope.

I hope this really works out

Haha, I'm guessing this is a case of similar names here, but that would be kind of awesome Porcupine Tree guitarist Steven Wilson was involved in this too.

Was on Letterman this week doing something fucking awesome.

http://www.nextmovie.com/blog/erykah-badu-interview-re-generation/

Interview also says that her next album comes out 4th Quarter 2012 - so we should probably expect it by February 2013.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Friday, 17 February 2012 21:22 (twelve years ago) link

they're probably regretting printing the sleeve on such oil-resistant card though, right

john-claude van donne (schlump), Friday, 17 February 2012 21:25 (twelve years ago) link

hm?

the original recorded version has Yasiin Bey/Mos Def on it also.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Friday, 17 February 2012 21:31 (twelve years ago) link

i wonder what her next record is. like the flying lotus one i guess, sooner than loretta brown? & when the Cannabinoids record is.

xp oh i just meant that letterman holds up a grossly fingerprint smudged lp sleeve

john-claude van donne (schlump), Friday, 17 February 2012 21:32 (twelve years ago) link

this whole setup is super lame, but she sounds great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWKCUU1SY4s

40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 17 February 2012 22:02 (twelve years ago) link

Are the Cannabinoids just her back up band? Or is there like an ALBUM she is specifically making with them?

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Friday, 17 February 2012 22:21 (twelve years ago) link

reviews from the shows say that they're playing remodelled erykah jams & a bunch of their own stuff. some stuff that erykah does sorta non-authorially doesn't totally do it for me even though it ticks a lot of boxes, like the letterman thing above or the recent blue note thing, which was super nice but just didn't have the focus of her records. like hearing that she's in a group w/tony allen & damon albarn makes me feel like it'll be some nice sounding record that doesn't do anything for me, but who knows, i'm maybe just less into her guest spots than some ppl

john-claude van donne (schlump), Friday, 17 February 2012 22:34 (twelve years ago) link

that interview is awesome; thanks Alex for posting it

the whole robert glasper album is excellent, surprised there hasn't been more discussion on ILM

lex pretend, Friday, 23 March 2012 09:54 (twelve years ago) link

what, even the Nirvana cover lex?

Number None, Friday, 23 March 2012 13:53 (twelve years ago) link

yes! the second cover of that song i love. totally transforms the shitty original

lex pretend, Friday, 23 March 2012 14:16 (twelve years ago) link

i talked a little about it on a jazz thread, but it's kinda boring and safe. i'm happy to listen to chris dave play beats for an hour, but it seems like it's in this weird middle ground between a 'real' song-focused r&b record and a jazz/musician's record where the trio gets to go hard, so it's not quite satisfying in either sense. it almost feels like a demo reel for them to get even more gigs backing up great vocalists.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 23 March 2012 15:02 (twelve years ago) link

maybe i need to give it another shot

40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 23 March 2012 15:02 (twelve years ago) link

jordan you are the first person i've heard who agrees with me about this! i like it but i don't love it, and i've thought it was my fault until now. not enough variation, i think -- for me, esperanza spalding's 'radio music society' is what 'black radio' thinks it is.
