I'm still trying to work out if I like Max Essa or if he just irritates me. If this is Aeroplane-Italo enough for me, or if it's just rubbitch 80s soft rock with a bit of disco added on. (see also: naked ladies as props on album art)

Actually I think it's crossed over from yacht-techno to yacht-rock and I'm not having it.

I danced on a yacht on four separate occasions the other week and I'm pretty sure it was played at at least three of them. #humblebrag

The album that's from is totally great by the way.
I was all "well, that's a bit shit..." but then there was a break and the drums kicked in and OH MY LORD - that should really just start about 3 minutes in, right, or is that a different song at the beginning?
― Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Friday, 29 July 2011 16:16 (five years ago) Permalink
It's an intro melody that's actually part of a Holy Ghost! song. Wolfram really milks it on the album, anyway.
That Roberto Rodriguez track is a jam - pretty sure Weatherall played it last week and I remember my ears pricking up.
― Matt DC, Saturday, 30 July 2011 10:46 (five years ago) Permalink
this is less balearic, more herculean (and love affair), but seeing as jessica 6 have already been mentioned...
(plus the rest of her EP too, tbh, it's a quality release and much better than you'd expect - having said that i have just realised that i'd love to hear remixes of beth ditto and jessica 6 in the old aeroplane style)
― lex pretend, Saturday, 30 July 2011 11:46 (five years ago) Permalink
this might be an "everyone knows this already" choice but it's amazing anyway
― lex pretend, Saturday, 30 July 2011 11:50 (five years ago) Permalink
OMG Beth Ditto would so not work Aeroplane stylee. & I'm not just saying that coz. I really just don't hear it.
― Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Saturday, 30 July 2011 11:51 (five years ago) Permalink
they seemed to be pretty adept at using vocals as disparate as grace jones and au revoir simone...and a lot of their remixes were precisely that, of doing something to an original that you'd never have imagined

Just... NO. I forbid it.

When I was in France a few weeks ago I went with some friends who are mostly "indie" fans to a nightclub that was playing stuff that was kinda like this thread, but perhaps less shiny and more beardo, and "Beam Me Up" had them cheering and singing along despite none of them knowing it. That kind of thing makes me happy, and since then I've been able to convert them a bit towards this stuff with some mixtapes etc, so for that reason alone I have too much love for "Beam Me Up".
Jacques Renault is doing a lot of good work with his remixes just now - this is a current favourite, it sounds so light and dreamy that it seems almost suspended in mid-air.

Ah, so that's who The Magician is. At least 4 of Plastic Plates remixes have found there way onto the Magic Tape mix series, including these:

there are still a bunch of Plastic Plates remixes available for DL from their Soundcloud page, as I discovered last night shortly after the Body Language remix blew my fucking mind out of the back of my skull:

The Plastic Plates stuff seems prett cool, hitting the right spot.
The Gatto Fritto track is beardy Scando-Balaeric and therefore well outside the remit of this thread so get out of town!
(kidding, it's lovely. It just does totally sound like a Lindstrom & Prins Thomas rip, heavy prog bass and all.)

I had also been working on a playlist (which was the whole reason I started this thread, looking for new stuff to put on it) which has a lot of overlap with yours, obviously, but I filled in a couple of older tracks and actual Aeroplane remixes and stuff with the right voibe.

I have also figured out what it is that distinguishes actual Aeroplane remixes from "things that sound like Aeroplane remixes", consistently.

most tracks listed here a bit too jammy for my tastes (Aeroplane remixes were always kinda songy, right?) but that KDMS 'tonight' song+video was totally worth dredging this thread for

I really really really love the Aeroplane mix of the Rapture's "Sail Away"! sadly the one they did for Storm Queen & released last week is godawful but the Rapture one is probably my favorite Aeroplane mix since like 2009.

Two more remixes from Plastic Plates worthy of mention:
Katy Perry - The One that Got Away (Plastic Plates Remix) PP wrench more pathos out of KP than I thought she was capable of.
I Blame Coco - Turn Your Back On Love (Plastic Plates Remix). Sting's uncanny daughter can write a great chorus, though the rest is a bit rote

The French Express label (Perseus, Chris Malinchek, Jonas Rathsman, Moon Boots) has been the leading light of this stuff for a year now. Moon Boot's "Sugar" from earlier in the year is more or less a remix/edit of Janet's "If", and its still flawless.

The blog The Last Gas Station does decent work covering the sub-genre. Some pointers: The Magician's Magic Tape set lists (they're all on La.Ga.Sta), Surf Ambassador Hendo's setlists, every thing on the French Express label, most Kitsuné label compilations, and half of Youtube user Majestic Casual's uploads.
Of current note, French Express, just mentioned above, now have a UK #2 with Chris Malinchak's "So Good to Me". And early stalwarts Classixx finally brought out their debut album Hanging Gardens.
Tons of freebies on soundcloud from the standout names like Plastic Plates, Perseus, Gigamesh, Moon Boots, Villa, Moonlight Matters, Breakbot, Yuksek, Goldroom, Flight Facilities etc.
Have I mentioned how much I love Moon Boots? I LOVE Moon Boots:
