o_0 Lex, this (Almunia) is somewhere between mid-period Pink Floyd and an Emeralds album played at the wrong speed. IDGI?!?!?!

~~~~~WARNING: POSTS COMPLETELY OUT OF CHARACTER~~~~~
I mean, it's OK and all but I do not want wibbly wubbly spacerock in my Aeroplane-influenced Italo Jams compilation thank you very much.
waaaaaaa, I'm falling behind, only up to Bubble Club (the orig is on Spotify and that's a HELL YEAH) but nice to see the suggestions keep coming, pls!
It's that ~shimmery~ wibbly wub noise that really gets me. I mean, this is years and years pre-Aeroplane, but it's the main synth sound in this track (also plus girly vocals and handclaps) that makes my ears sit up and say boy howdy:
(Medicine - I M Yrs, if you don't have Spotify, but it's not on YouTube)
OK, the beautiful male falsetto vocals just kicked in on the roberto rodriguez track, with swishy synth sounds and yup, that's going on the playlist, extra bonus points for superfluous house piano chucked in on top, YESSSSS so happy.
Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Friday, 29 July 2011 12:17 (twelve years ago) link
(i assume you've heard john talabot & glasser "families" k8?)
lex pretend, Friday, 29 July 2011 12:21 (twelve years ago) link
I listened to the Talabot/Glasser track when someone posted and remember being curiously unimpressed by it.
(side note: basically, if someone would do a swishy Aeroplane style remix of Azari & III's Manic World, that would be my favourite thing in the world ever, but it's so not gonna happen, that would be a mutant.)
Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Friday, 29 July 2011 12:29 (twelve years ago) link
ooh i just got the remix promo cd of "manic", haven't listened yet (don't think i recognised remixers' names), will let this thread know if any are in that vein
lex pretend, Friday, 29 July 2011 12:31 (twelve years ago) link
YUP, the Max Essa remix has the handclaps, the swishiness and ghostly female vox, but man, I wish they'd left his vocals out of it, ha ha. Otherwise perfect.
Actually, that reminds me - there are definitely some BTWS remixes that fit this thread
I'm still trying to work out if I like Max Essa or if he just irritates me. If this is Aeroplane-Italo enough for me, or if it's just rubbitch 80s soft rock with a bit of disco added on. (see also: naked ladies as props on album art)
Matt DC, Friday, 29 July 2011 16:05 (twelve years ago) link
I was all "well, that's a bit shit..." but then there was a break and the drums kicked in and OH MY LORD - that should really just start about 3 minutes in, right, or is that a different song at the beginning?
Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Friday, 29 July 2011 16:16 (twelve years ago) link
It's an intro melody that's actually part of a Holy Ghost! song. Wolfram really milks it on the album, anyway.
That Roberto Rodriguez track is a jam - pretty sure Weatherall played it last week and I remember my ears pricking up.
Matt DC, Saturday, 30 July 2011 10:46 (twelve years ago) link
this is less balearic, more herculean (and love affair), but seeing as jessica 6 have already been mentioned...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UECeJzd-G30&ob=av2e
(plus the rest of her EP too, tbh, it's a quality release and much better than you'd expect - having said that i have just realised that i'd love to hear remixes of beth ditto and jessica 6 in the old aeroplane style)
lex pretend, Saturday, 30 July 2011 11:46 (twelve years ago) link
Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Saturday, 30 July 2011 11:51 (twelve years ago) link
they seemed to be pretty adept at using vocals as disparate as grace jones and au revoir simone...and a lot of their remixes were precisely that, of doing something to an original that you'd never have imagined
lex pretend, Saturday, 30 July 2011 11:54 (twelve years ago) link
When I was in France a few weeks ago I went with some friends who are mostly "indie" fans to a nightclub that was playing stuff that was kinda like this thread, but perhaps less shiny and more beardo, and "Beam Me Up" had them cheering and singing along despite none of them knowing it. That kind of thing makes me happy, and since then I've been able to convert them a bit towards this stuff with some mixtapes etc, so for that reason alone I have too much love for "Beam Me Up".
Jacques Renault is doing a lot of good work with his remixes just now - this is a current favourite, it sounds so light and dreamy that it seems almost suspended in mid-air.
The Plastic Plates stuff seems prett cool, hitting the right spot.
The Gatto Fritto track is beardy Scando-Balaeric and therefore well outside the remit of this thread so get out of town!
(kidding, it's lovely. It just does totally sound like a Lindstrom & Prins Thomas rip, heavy prog bass and all.)
Does anyone still listen to Vito's or The Magician's mixes? I see them come up on my feeds but don't think I've listened to one in over three or four years. Stephen's Magic Tape mixes are into the #60s now.
groovypanda, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 08:52 (seven years ago) link
Vito's only doing one or two a year now; I'm sure I listen to them but they don't make any impact. Haven't listened to a Magic Tape since before I Dont Know What To Do came out.
Listened to (the song) We Can't Fly yesterday though, and it still holds up. Having not heard the album, I'm happy to think of the song as a culmination of the Aeroplane project
