Seriously. You can disagree all you want. They wanted to run him out of town on a rail after he threw 4 picks in the Minnesota game mid-season. He was persona non grata around these parts until he got hot at the right time at the end of the year. The second half of the Buffalo game was really his turning point.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 14 August 2008 19:58 (fifteen years ago) link

^um find a completion in the 2nd half of hte bills game:

johnny crunch, Saturday, 16 August 2008 14:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Bill, I am from "around these parts" and I remember how the media treated him; the general attitude was "wait till the end of the season" more so than "run him out of town".

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 17 August 2008 00:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Anyways, I'm far more excited to see if B. Jacobs can get thru the season uninjured. BEAST

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 17 August 2008 00:14 (fifteen years ago) link

"unless you mean turning point in learning how to handoff and get out the way"

that's exactly what I meant.

Bill Magill, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:44 (fifteen years ago) link

I like how everybody has long narrative shit about this dude and his "turning points" as if his "turning point" isn't just every time the team is down and there's two minutes left in the half and they're on the road.

El Tomboto, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:46 (fifteen years ago) link

If Asante Samuel didnt drop the easy interception before the Tyree play in the Super Bowl, we're looking at Brett Favre as a Giant.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 15:57 (fifteen years ago) link

that wasn't an easy interception, iirc asante would've had to pull off a crazy marvin harrison type one-handed toe-tap kinda catch to get that ball

cankles, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:58 (fifteen years ago) link

It was a catch a guy of his caliber should make 99/100 times. I bet ck, the local Pats fan, would agree.

i did not see the 2nd half of the game, i can not say. too busy getting some chocolate chip cookies, which, at the time, was much higher on the priorities list than watching football.

in hindsight i should've watched the fucking game.

cankles, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 08:31 (fifteen years ago) link

That's a catchable ball. Seriously. Maybe not easy, but that's a play that should be made.

"bill magill u are pretty corny"

thanks

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

it looks like he jumped high and it skipped off his fingertips, it didn't look that catchable.

omar little, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 17:19 (fifteen years ago) link

it bounced off his fingertips while he was at the highest point of his perfectly-timed leap, body fully extended. that would've been an amazing catch for any WR, let alone a CB.

really, you'd be better off harping on belichick for not taking the field goal on 4th and 14, or for not calling a proper 2-minute offense on the final drive (when, needing only a field goal and having a timeout or two left, brady just heaved it to moss a few times; game over.)

cankles, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 18:03 (fifteen years ago) link

having just seen the clip, yeah, that was definitely catchable. he didn't catch it because he took a poor angle.

but that's why he's a db instead of a wr.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 18:11 (fifteen years ago) link

dear bill magill,

shut the fuck up!!! god what the hell is wrong with you. half of us are "from these parts" and got a different rememberance than you, this is possibly because only retards and degenerates actually think the post's every-changing back page reflects opinions "around these parts"?

also the idea that you actually think the giants would've ever wasted money on favre actually seriously makes me think that you've been hit on the head a lot of times. a LOT of times. like joe montana levels of times. there are only two goddamned teams in the league would've done something THAT stupid as picking up someone like drunky mccajun and those two teams are minnesota and the jets. since everyone in minnesota would've burned down the metrodome had hated wisconsinite brett favre come to play there forever and ever, the jets had to man up and take control of the idiocy.

EVERYONE KNOWS THIS SHIT, IT'S LIKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

sincerely,

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Shefter,

After the Minnesota game, even Jerry Reese called Eli out. I'm not going with what the Post said, I don't even read it. But a lot of people were looking to run Eli out of town on a rail after that game.

I'm actually happy for the guy. Notwithstanding what I said above about the Samuel play, the Giants four-game playoff run was phenomenal. Had they lost to the Pats, it still would have been amazing.

And Jordan- how "suspect" am I? I don't claim to be an expert on any of this stuff, including the "metal v. pop" issue. I'm just posting about topics I like. My opinion is no more important than anybody else's.

it would purely be for the 2 super bowl wins, he really has nothing else on his resume and if pass stats continue to trend upwards that's be even more the case by the time his eligibility rolls around. phil simms prob has a more reasonable claim to the HOF and he probably isn't getting in either.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 2 November 2015 21:54 (eight years ago) link

he could always win a 3rd champ of course. with how good the patriots look this year it would be a good season for the giants to win again.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 2 November 2015 21:56 (eight years ago) link

he's going in, no question. there's a reason a guy like joe namath, more or less the eli of his day, is in but guys like, idk, mcnabb or boomer esiason will never have a chance. dude's got two super bowls and will probably end up between 6th-8th in all-time passing TDs by the time he's done. probably won't deserve it though, unless he has an unexpected final act

k3vin k., Tuesday, 3 November 2015 03:46 (eight years ago) link

it's funny looking at old football stats, such a different game. like namath threw 173 TDs and turned the ball over 243 times in his career and he's a legend

k3vin k., Tuesday, 3 November 2015 03:47 (eight years ago) link

he'll get in due to manning halo effect and the super bowls, everyone will forget he was never a top 5 quarterback in any season of his career.

two rings as a QB def gets you there, but I'd like to see him sweat it for a year or two

chicken lit (rip van wanko), Saturday, 27 August 2016 17:12 (seven years ago) link

i would guess eli is the worst qb to have 2 rings? he'll certainly be a test case whether or not that is automatic entry. barnwell gave him 40% chance to get in in a recent article.

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 27 August 2016 17:18 (seven years ago) link

either him or roethlisberger

Eli has had a better career than Plunkett, who also won two Superbowls.

earlnash, Saturday, 27 August 2016 17:34 (seven years ago) link

eli's last couple seasons have been good, and the two seasons before his hilarious 2013 were almost as good. i think his cameron frye persona masks some of his skills and intangibles tbh.

nomar, Saturday, 27 August 2016 17:37 (seven years ago) link

Eli is in the Hall of Fame. The dude is Payton Manning's brother, won 2 Superbowls in New York and beat the Patriots in a couple of the most ridiculous ways possible.

NFL Hall is way more about the Fame than greatness, that's why they put in like a QB and WR and maybe put in a whole O-line every 20 years.

I've said it before, greatness in the NFL is a whole lot of luck. Tom Brady gets drafted by the Chiefs, he might have been great, but he wouldn't be Tom Brady you know now.

earlnash, Saturday, 27 August 2016 17:39 (seven years ago) link

...that's why they put in a QB and WR nearly every year....
