BIG FAT PROPS to You Can Dance, and a big raspberry to Dan (who's normally SO COOL) for disliking Introspective. No explanation will suffice, sorry, my friend....

Amon Tobin's remix of Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Grief" and the NIN remix of Puff Daddy's "Victory" are fun.

The Coldcut remix of “Paid in Full” by Eric B. & Rakim.

It tore up every club I was in when it came out. Exposed many to Ofra Haza for the first time, and for many has become the definitive version of the song as opposed to the original.

Don't know if this counts as a remix but remember back in high school the 12 inch of Bizarre Love Triangle didn't leave my turntable for a solid month.

H, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

It maybe doesn't count as it's a mix by the original artist, but DJ Pierre's Wild Pitch mix of Photon Inc's "Generate Power" is utter genius. Possibly the finest build-up and crescendo ever created in dance music.
Special mention also to the MK mix of Nightcrawlers' "Push the feeling on" for taking the (meaningless) vocal and then making it incomprehensible. I loved this little trick - everyone knew that what was said in a house lyric was kind of irrelevant and for MK to just fuck about with it like that was a total release. Did Todd Edwards do it first? Can't remember. Anyway, UK garage does this all the time now, but I still like the first one.

jacob, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

the 12 inch of new order's bizarre love triangle is their own remix though isn't it ? anyway, wasn't ofra haza on MARRS' 'pump up the volume' first or was that a soundalike ?

Amira - My Desire (Dreem Teem Mix)

Tim, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lexis - Hypnotise: either the autechre slow or normal remixes, which, btw, I can't tell the difference between.
Ko-Wreck Technique - Metro Dade (Plaid mix)
The Baby Namboos - Ancoats 2 Zambia (Geoff Barrow): scratchtastic!
Link - Arcadian (Mogwai remix)
2 Lones Swordsmen - Spine Bubbles (Ellis Island Sound Remix)
LFO - Freeze (Labradford mix): last Warp 10+3, I swear!
Massive Attack - Superpredators (it sez somewhere it's a remix...)
Portishead - Sour Sour Times; Tribute To Monk & Canatella
autechre - vletrmx21: if it's actually a remix...

Leee, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Hardfloor mix of "Circus Bells" by Robert Armani deserves a mention here. I accidentally bought a Robert Armani best-of with this song on it and it wasn't till I got home that I realized it was the original...! * bites tongue *

Tracer Hand, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Matos is OTM for me - Van Helden particularly transformed things by acts I didn't like at all into great dance records, and the Timo Maas Dooms Night and Fatboy Slim Brimful Of Asha are among the distinguished and impressive remixes that have utterly supplanted the original - almost everyone mentioning those titles means these remixes. Another old favourite that's not been mentioned is the Scratch Perverts' job on Jonny L's 20 Degrees. I usually find it hard to hear drum & bass remixes as remixes - they often sound like entirely new tracks. Does anyone else feel like that, or is this incomprehensible?

Martin Skidmore, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dillinja's remix of Kevin 'Reese' Saunderson's "Just Another Chance"
aka "Deadly Deep Subs" in its VIP mix (found on Ultrasound's This Is Jungle comp)

Groove Chronicles' (well just Lewis 'El-B' Beadle, supposedly) reconstruction of Aaliyah's "One In A Million"
aka "Stone Cold"

both... are there even words for it?
well, vertiginous bass and it's the same sound i think (from "Just Another Chance")

Paul, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

one year passes...
I heard "Brimful Of Asha" again today, and I'm a
conscientious objector to the remix. It doesn't ruin
the song but it doesn't really improve it - all Cook
did was loop a few things to make it longer. It's
not even more danceable, since it uses the
original drum track. It's just not a neccesary
thing.

Where was I when anyone decided the "answer" was anything other than Cornelius's remix of Blur's "Tender"?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:38 (twenty years ago) link

Felix Da Housekat 'Silver Screen Shower Scene (Thin White Duke mix)'

probably my favourite remix of all time now

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:44 (twenty years ago) link

When I first got that I played the hell out of it. Now it's his "Danger High Voltage" and "Hollywood" remixes that are floating my boat, although "SSSS" does still rule.

The single edits of Pet Shop Boys' "Suburbia" and "Heart", both improving the original considerably.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 15:41 (twenty years ago) link

Geir, you are just WRONG. The single edit of "Suburbia" was horrible and pretty much annihilated the paranoid mood of the original.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 15:44 (twenty years ago) link

Talvin Singh's remix of Madonna's "Nothing Really Matters" = the best piece of music this is/has/or ever will have Madge's name attached to it.

I'm a sucker for Alec Empire remixes of anything, but his retake on Bjork's "State of Emergency" is one of my favorites, a perfect combination of sounds & lyric.

Amon Tobin's remix of Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Grief"

Fercryinoutloud I need to here this!

My ultimate fave, the danceable-not danceable Cornelius remix of Coldcut's 'Atomic Moog 2000'. I'm also really stuck on the Chemical Brothers remix of Method Man - 'Bring The Pain'.

TS: Chems remix of "Bring The Pain" vs The Prodigy's remix of "Release Yo 'Delf"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 20:44 (twenty years ago) link

OH SHIT NAW "RELEASE YOU 'DELF"!!!! God I love that thing.

Everything I've ever heard Cornelius remix has been nothing short of astounding & lovely. I want him to do at least one disgusting dirty-ass remix of something eventually.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 20:47 (twenty years ago) link

nick - don't ever hear his Moby mix.

Dan, that TS is easy for me - they're on the same single and I'll play the hell out of the Chem remixes (vocal and instro-edit) and occasionally neglect the Prodigy one.

The Dust Brothers have some grate ones - Len - 'Feelin' Alright', Money Mark - 'Cry', Sukia - 'Gary Super Macho', Beck - 'Dark And Lovely', They Might Be Giants - 'Snail Shell', Squirrel Nut Zipper's 'The Suits Are Picking Up The Bill', the excellent April March mixes, the *classic* two from the Paul's Boutique singles. I even liked their No Doubt remix.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 20:59 (twenty years ago) link

The DFA's remix of Le Tigre deserves mini-classic status.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 21:00 (twenty years ago) link

I was gonna say 'release yo' delf' but the first post had something to do with the remix accentuating the original track. does the prodigy remix contain any parts of the original?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 21:07 (twenty years ago) link

It contains the vocal!

You can't really go wrong with kruder and Dorfmeister, in particular 'Bug Powder Dust' and 'First of Tha Month'.

Natural Calamity - 'Home' (Prince Paul remix feat Paul Barman) is one of the best remixes I can name. Why? It pitches up the melancholic nostalgia vibe of the original with a string sample from heaven, uses a break that makes me feel like moving my butt when it shouldn't, creates minor drama during the ever ridiculous Barman rap and has a wonderfully understated piano moment. It has a greater "looks at the world with big child eyes" feel than the original - in other words, what the original nearly suceeded in being. In fact, it's a lot like a slightly twee/slightly nuts Portishead = best thing ever.

On that note, I also recommend Portishead's 'Revenge Of The Number', an in-house remix of 'Numb' that is as sublime as it is hip hopping. This and the abovementioned are sonic cousins. Badly Drawn Boy - 'Once Around The Block' (Nick Faber mix) is another of my favourite 'post-trip hop' songs, but the way the lead melodies andbacking vocals have been rearranged to fit the hip hop break and bassline, it sounds a lot like 80s romo.

Cornelius from '97 - 01 is king remixer.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:27 (nineteen years ago) link

LRD mix of Felix still my favourite

Middleton (Jedis) mix of Underworld's 'Jumbo' my second fav - narrowly beating the aforementioned Goldfrapp mix for Middleton's best imo

Mekon feat Schooly D - Skool's Out (LRD Mix)
NuYorican Soul - Runaway (AVH mix) - even though i love the "original" cover immensely
Saint Etienne - Who Do You Think You Are (Roger S Vocal)
Johnny L - This Time (Carl Craig Mix)
Saint Etienne - Heart Failed (Two Lone Swordsmen Vocal)
Basia - Third Time Lucky (Johnny Vicious Mix)
Model 500 - The Flow (Jedi Knights reworking)
Hardrive - Deep Inside (this counts, right? it's is technically a remix/overhaul of Barbara Tucker's "Beautiful People")
Joi Cardwell - Soul To Bare (Christian Hornbostel Mix)
Moloko - Sing It Back (Boris Dlugosch mix)
Jay-jay Johanson - I Want Some Fun (Funkstorung Mix)
Natalie Imbruglia - Smoke (Way Out West Vocal)
M People - How Can I Love You More (Sasha mix)
Lamb - Cotton Wool (Fila Brasilia Mix)
LSG - Netherworld (Kid Loops mix)
Kings of Convenience - I Don't Know What The Bloody Long Title Of This Track Is (Royksopp mix)
4 Hero - Starchasers (MAW Vocal mix)
Karen Ramirez - If We Try (Silk's Disco Anthem)
South Street Player

actually a lot of these i like the original perfectly fine, but the remixes make the songs certifiably classic

also... there's like a million more, but these sprang to mind instantly

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:52 (nineteen years ago) link

South Street Player - Who Keeps Changing Your Mind (Sure Is Pure mix)

It maybe doesn't count as it's a mix by the original artist, but DJ Pierre's Wild Pitch mix of Photon Inc's "Generate Power" is utter genius.
It counts for me ... lots of artists remix themselves. And I'll second the "Generate Power" remix ... incredible.
the 12 inch of new order's bizarre love triangle is their own remix though isn't it ?
The version on "Substance" is Shep Pettibone, if that's what you're talking about.
A few of my faves :

System 7 -- Alphawave (Plastikman). Probably my all-time fave.
Saint Etienne -- Like a Motorway (Autechre).
Datach'i -- Memorandum (Mogwai)
New Order -- Round and Round (Kevin Saunderson's Detroit Mix)
PWOG -- Kraak (Mark Broom)
Torture -- (I forget the track name, I'm not with my music collection at the moment) (Kevin Martin)

six months pass...

Alfred's list is really good but it's heavy on the 80s and 90s. I'm interested in putting together a playlist of pop/indie remixes from the past 10-15 years or so. stuff like:

Florence + the Machine - What Kind of Man (Nicolas Jaar Remix)
Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream (Sam La More 12" Remix)
Delorean - Seasun (John Talabot's Kids + Drums Remix)
The xx - Violent Noise (Four Tet Remix)
The Knife - Heartbeats (Rex the Dog Remix)
CHVRCHES - Leave a Trace (Four Tet Remix)

Suggestions welcome!
