Vocals on the new album suck balls.

Reatards Unite, Friday, 16 May 2008 05:25 (fifteen years ago) link

s/t was the first I heard and I've always dug it. I'm surprised no one is talking up Tomorrow Hit Today. That album floored me when it came out. Not sure what I'm voting for though. Think I'll give a listen to a couple first.

steampig67, Friday, 16 May 2008 12:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Another vote for EGBDF, but 'Piece of Cake' is close behind. I really need to listen to the newer ones, 'cause a buddy of mine swears by 'em. Very stoked to go see them in Chicago (the Venue has changed from the new 'Bottom Lounge' to Reggie's - that's cool). Hey - what are the Mudhoney side-projects on Sub-pop? I've heard them in friends cars and homes but the project names escape me at the moment.

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 16 May 2008 13:21 (fifteen years ago) link

I bought Generation Spokesmodel when it came out and thought it was pretty crap, but My Brother The Cow is actually pretty good as an album. Not that I'd ever vote for it.

I dunno if I've ever heard Fudge!

I also think the self-title album is being unfairly bashed. Really though if yr gonna include the Early Singles with Superfuzz Bigmuff there's no competition

Colonel Poo, Friday, 16 May 2008 13:54 (fifteen years ago) link

It would seem daft not to when most people own the cd of that version.
I have 1st album on vinyl and i like it.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 16 May 2008 13:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Woah .. the Mudhoney show in Chicago has been moved to Reggie's now?? SWEET! that's like three blocks from my place. Niceness

Stormy Davis, Friday, 16 May 2008 14:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I still like s/t; I just overrated it at the time is all. And even w/o the singles, Superfuzz Bigmuff would still dominate.

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 16 May 2008 14:23 (fifteen years ago) link

allmusic doesn't even show Superfuzz/Bigmuff as an LP. Is the SF/BM+early singles an out of print compilation?

Screw it, I'm going for s/t.

rockapads, Friday, 16 May 2008 17:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes.
Sub Pop is reissuing it as a deluxe 2xCD.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 16 May 2008 18:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Mudhoney isn't at all bad, but it was a bit disappointing at the time. Only a few album tracks can compete with the pre-release singles, notably "Here Comes Sickness" and "When Tomorrow Hits". Superfuzz and singles/comp trax were all so fucking blazing, that I - and, I think, a lot of other fans - expected something more. Lacks anything as flat-out fucked as "Mudride" or the "Halloween" cover, indicating that Mudhoney didn't wanna be Flipper Mk II after all, but they weren't yet writing tunes strong enough to make up for the relative lack of tarpit grime (a deficit they'd remedy on EGBDF).

contenderizer, Friday, 16 May 2008 18:32 (fifteen years ago) link

"flat out fucked" is on the s/t

am0n, Friday, 16 May 2008 18:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes it is. Not a terribly great song, tho.

contenderizer, Friday, 16 May 2008 18:43 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean, when one of the very best songs on your debut album is a goofy acid-funk throwaway jam called "Magnolia Caboose Babyshit", it's maybe an indication that you need to spend a little more time in the woodshed.

contenderizer, Friday, 16 May 2008 18:45 (fifteen years ago) link

It's a Blue Cheer cover!

Stormy Davis, Friday, 16 May 2008 18:49 (fifteen years ago) link

man, I loved the s/t when it came out. I remember picking up the "This Gift" single (with "Baby Help Me Forget" on the B-side) and just thinking holy fuck these guys are on a roll

Stormy Davis, Friday, 16 May 2008 18:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Good point. when one of the very best songs on your debut album is a cover of someone else's goofy acid-funk throwaway jam...

contenderizer, Friday, 16 May 2008 18:53 (fifteen years ago) link

that was to the x

Anyways, stormy makes a good point. The fact that I only half dug it doesn't really prove the album isn't great.

contenderizer, Friday, 16 May 2008 18:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Maybe it needs another listen, i always liked it though.

StanM, Friday, 16 May 2008 21:48 (fifteen years ago) link

'Mudhoney' is the first one I heard and it blew me away. There is a couple of better songs on the Superfuzz Bigmuff, but I got to go with the self titled one.

After the first two, I think 'Tomorrow Hit Today' is the best one. That one is really consistent and they seemed to let some of the songs jam out a bit more. EGBDF is pretty good, but back then I thought it was kind of samey after the first two. There are some good tunes on the two in between, but there are also a couple of jokey things that make me hit the next button on them.

The comp 'March to Fuzz' is excellent. The first disc hits everything hot and the bonus disc of odd and rare stuff is really fun. If you are a fan, it is worth picking up for that second disc and the fact that the first disc sounds remastered compared to the early CDs. The Best of the BBC collection is also really good if you are a Mudhoney fan.

I really dig that Fang cover (The Money Will Roll Right In) on their Best Of/Rarities album. Don't remember what it was originally on.

circa1916, Sunday, 18 May 2008 08:37 (fifteen years ago) link

"The Money Will Roll Right In" was originally a "Let It Slide" b-side. One of the best covers the band ever did, so low and greasy and evil-sounding. Motorhead's "Over the Top" = another excellent cover from about the same time - 1st appeared as a "Suck You Dry" b-side. One of the nice things about that March to Fuzz collection is how damn comprehensive it is. A lot of Mudhoney's best tunes appeared in the margins of their discography. "Brand New Face" only ever showed up as a Tommorow Hit Today b-side, and it's one of my favorite songs from that album/era.

Agree w/ earlnash & others about the late-arriving greatness of Tomorrow Hit Today. Only recent Mudhoney album I'd have a hard time parting with.

I'm curious about this since I'd always loved Soundgarden and The Melvins, but had a weird Mudhoney blindspot… A pal won tickets to see them back in high school, then at the last minute decided he didn't want to see them and since he had a car and I didn't, I couldn't see them either. He was happy just to let the tickets go to waste.

Fuck you, Mike.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 26 May 2008 13:39 (fifteen years ago) link

IMO there were better singles off of Superfuzz, the s/t, and Piece of Cake, but as far as a cohesive album, it's Every Good Boy over Tomorrow Hit Today by a hair.

Cristal Kieslowski (admrl), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 20:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, well sort-of, there was the 2-disc March To Fuzz, where the first disc was as close to a greatest hits as they would get (pre-2000 anyway) and the second disc is rarities and b-sides.

Heard the new Mudhoney song driving into work this morning and it sounds like Mark Arm doing an impersonation VOM-era Richard Meltzer. Not that that is a bad thing.

chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 16:55 (eleven years ago) link

I saw 'em in Toronto in '91 and Mark spent the whole show pretending they were Rush! He'd go like "Are you ready...for 'The Spirit of Radio!'" and they'd play "This Gift", then "this is about the Priests...of the Temples of Syrinx!" and they'd go into "Touch Me I'm Sick". Fun show.

Side 2 of "Superfuzz BigMuff" is absolutely perfect: "No One Has" -> "If I Think" -> "In n Out Of Grace"
