i have a vinyl box set that came out in the states 20 years ago, consists of albums 1-5. that would be my pick.

i only discovered the 80's tangerine dream (aka The Virgin Years) and know little of their 70s work.
only yesterday i blasted out Tangram which consists of a fair bit of DX7 gumph, but when they hit the right buttons - damn it was good.

The atypical Electronic Meditation gets my vote. Real-life drums make that and Alpha Centauri my favourites of the 7 or 8 TDs I've owned over the years. A reference point demonstrating the difference between orbiting the earth and merely floating motionless.

(I too wish the Sorcerer soundtrack was here.)

"Epsilon" is great - it was recorded halfway between "Phaedra" and "Rubycon", so how could it not be? First half of title track is a floaty mellotron piece that is really beautiful.

i really should get some more of their stuff. i had a bad experience with one of their eighties albums when i was 16 and it's made me very wary.

Found the "Epsilon" LP v. cheap a few years ago - great. Great cover, too. Haven't heard much TD apart from Phaedra though.

encore deserved a vote but I'm glad I voted Force Majeure, don't think I'll ever tire of that album. Lindstrom/Alex Moulton/Zombi fans need to check it out.

Green Desert (rec. in 1973)

Castle EMS 349 - This recording was supposed to be released instead of Phaedra in 73. It then disappeared into TD's safe until it was discovered again and released in 1986.

I seem to be missing only the box set and Force Majeure. I plan to correct that soon!

I just picked up a $3 copy of Phaedra today cuz of this thread, the only other one I have is Electronic Meditation so it's nice to know where to start.

I think he was hearing Dave Gilmour in his head.

Also, I don't think they were very good at writing melodies - Schmoelling was the melody guy, and he didn't join them till later, I think? This album is just Froese and Franke, right?

Force Majeure is probably my favorite album of theirs post-73 idk, tons and tons of cool melodies in the title track, not too much generic sequencer stuff, cool “bad” guitar sound, go ahead FP me

dang, i am such a doofus. i love the tangerine dream records i have (zeit, phaedra, stratosphear, and Froese's Aqua), and i've heard their 80s music through various film soundtracks (ok, Legend mostly), but i had no idea about Force Majeure. i kind of assumed their band trajectory was the ambient early stuff --> soundtracks and more cheesy stuff i knew they had more traditional band roots but i didn't realize they had an album like this, and especially not one in the late 70s! oops.

You should be warned that Cyclone, the album preceding Force Majeure, has vocals on it

Talking of Suggest Bans. Generic sequencer stuff is virtually my favourite kind of music.

Also, since TD literally invented that sequencer-driven style of composition, it's kind of a low blow to insinuate that their use of the technique was uninspired!

is there much sequencer stuff on the first four albums? I mean, I used to dig all the Virgin stuff but people change. they did a lot of cool stuff besides arpeggios

I think "Phaedra" is the first one with sequencers but it is pretty much their signature sound, or definitely the most recognisable.

I mean, "That sounds like Tangerine Dream", doesn't usually refer to guitar playing that reminds you of Edgar Froese, for instance.

right because all tangerine dreams before force Majeure only had sequencers, no other instruments or synthesized sounds
